Wrestling's extreme future By THE LILSBOYS
THE buy-rate for last week's ECW PPV hasn't come in yet but there's one thing everyone in the wrestling industry agrees on - it's going to be huge.
Some early estimates put the amount of households purchasing One Night Stand as high as 800,000, which would make it one of the biggest selling wrestling events of all time.
If we treat ECW as a 'single brand' like Raw or Smackdown, even if the figure is half of that it will still be a major success.
The best split show for more than a year was January's New Year's Revolution, which was sold to around 370,000 households.
Backlash and No Way Out currently stand at 295,000 and 238,000 respectively and even the dual brand Royal Rumble - almost always the second biggest-seller of the year - will probably wind up just under the 600,000 mark.
The obvious irony is that when it was actually a fully functional company ECW never exceeded 100,000 purchases, and the success of this show combined with Shane Douglas' Hardcore Homecoming and the recent Rise And Fall DVD would have wiped out the debts that sent the company under many times over.
