Well, ladies and gentlemen, it feels good to be back. I’m Chad Matthews, former SD reporter, and I’m making my return to the main page as the new Velocity reporter. On to the show…
The VELOCITY Report (5/28/05)
The show opened with images of John Cena retaining the WWE Championship in the “I Quit” match at Judgment Day.
Match 1: The Basham Brothers vs. Nunzio and Funaki
-(CMV1 note- Joy Giovanni was the guest ring announcer for this match). Right from the start, Funaki got taken out, leaving Nunzio to battle the Secretaries of Defense on his own. After some early domination that saw Doug Basham hit a flapjack and Danny Basham hit a high angle back suplex, Funaki managed to recover and make it back to the apron. However, Doug wasted little time in pulling Funaki’s feet out from under him, sending him back down to the floor and out of reach for a tag. Meanwhile, Nunzio reversed a Danny Basham powerbomb attempt into a pinning combo for a near fall. Little Guido finally managed the hot tag to Funaki, who shook off the cobwebs to catch Danny with a flying head scissors and a running one-handed facebuster for a near fall. Nunzio then tried to take out Doug on the outside, but failed, allowing the Basham to catch Funaki off guard as he was about to deliver a flying cross body off the top turnbuckle. The finish came when Doug pushed Funaki off the top, allowing The Bashams to pick up the victory via Danny Basham spinning Baldo Bomb at 4:53. (CMV1 rating- * ¼ ) (CMV1 note- solid, yet short match that was a little too one-sided for my taste. It was very formulaic for a tag match, with the heels dominating, then the faces making the hot tag, and then the finish coming soon after).
Highlights of the Winner’s Choice Battle Royal aired. The winner, in case your memory needs jogging, was Kurt Angle, who went on to make a challenge to Booker T’s wife Sharmell Sullivan for a match next week (CMV1 note- I just don’t get it…who wants to see that?).
Match 2: Booker T (w/ wife Sharmell) vs. Quinson Valentino
-(CMV1 note- Michelle McCool was the guest ring announcer for this match, alerting me to where exactly they put all these worthless divas every week). Booker dominated in the early going, scoring with a crescent heel kick, but Valentino made a short comeback. The 5-time WCW Champ fought back quickly, drilling the unknown guy with a spinebuster. He then did the Spinaroonie and the finish came when Book hit the axe kick for the win at 2:05. (CMV1 note- ¼ *) (CMV1 note- there wasn’t much to it, obviously. Sharmell looked pissed, Booker did his thing, and everyone goes home happy I suppose).
Highlights of Heyman, Bischoff, and McMahon sharing the ring together on last Monday’s RAW aired. That was a great segment…
Match 3: Billy Kidman vs. Shannon Moore
-(CMV1 note- Miss Jackie was the guest ring announcer for this match and man does Shannon Moore look crazy). The match began with some pretty rapid fire action, as Moore scored an early near fall with a cross body off the second turnbuckle. Unfortunately for the Prince of Punk, Billy Kidman came right back with one of the best dropkicks in the business. Kidman kept momentum for a few sequences, but Moore scored with a clothesline to gain control. Moore proceeded to hit a jumping leg lariat before sending BK over the top and to the floor with a clothesline. Then the former Mattitude follower (that was for you, V1) took to the air and connected with a nice sommsersault plancha. He rolled Torrie’s husband back into the ring and attempted a corkscrew moonsault, but Billy rolled out of the way! Kidman then drilled Moore with the BK Bomb, and finish came soon after when Billy hit the Shooting Star Press for the win at 3:33. (CMV1 rating- * ½ ) (CMV1 note- I’d like to see a lengthier match between those two because this match was a fun few minutes to watch. Good action from the cruiserweights, as usual, proving why they should at least get one match on every single Smackdown).
Match 4: United States Champion Orlando Jordan vs. Mark Jindrak
-(Torrie Wilson was the guest ring announcer for this US title bout). OJ dominated early on with a bunch of plain, generic offense. He sent Jindrak into the ropes and looked for an armdrag, but MJ reversed it into an armdrag of his own. Jindrak then connected with a very nice dropkick before settling into some basic, generic offense of his own (CMV1 note- well, as if the dropkick wasn’t generic enough for you). Eventually, Jordan regained control when he tossed MJ to the outside. OJ stayed on the offensive for awhile, hitting a couple of clotheslines. He then hit his left-right combination of boxing-style jabs, but when he went for big roundhouse right, Jindrak sidestepped it and scored a near fall with a schoolboy. Jordan managed to keep the momentum in his favor, though, with a swinging neckbreaker. OJ tried for a big clothesline, but missed, allowing Jindrak to hit his patented and deadly left-hand mega-punch (CMV1 note- that’s its name now, the mega-punch). MJ hit a few clotheslines, followed by another nice dropkick for a near fall. The finish came when OJ hit a Flatliner out of nowhere to win the match and retain his title at 6:13. (CMV1 rating- ½ *) (CMV1 note- neither of these guys should be competing for the United States Championship. Orlando Jordan is by far the worst US champion the WWE has produced since bringing the title back in 2003)
The show faded to black as Josh Matthews (no relation) and Steve Romero hyped the match between Angle and Sharmell for next week’s Smackdown.
All in all…I’d rate this as a 5/10. I thoroughly enjoyed the cruiserweight match and also thought the opening tag team match was solid… Booker T being on the show gave it star power I suppose, but I’m not much squash matches…the main-event was given six-minutes, and it just wasn’t up to par. Since the show is so short, it’s hard to give it a higher than average overall rating when the main-event doesn’t produce. Other than the main-event, though, it was a pretty good show, so calling it a 5/10 seems pretty fitting to me.
