Breaking The Walls Down Hello and welcome back to another edition of Breaking The Walls Down. The news has been pretty steady over the past two weeks, so I think I will focus on that. Since I will be focusing on the news, this week’s column will be nothing but Bits and Pieces.
Bits and Pieces
Paul Bearer has joined a lot of people by having gastric bypass surgery. I looked at his site and the difference is astounding. Hopefully his weight change is being met with exercise to maximize the usefulness of the aforementioned surgery. He certainly looks a lot better than he did before.
What a bizarre set of circumstances for Jerry Lawler last week. His ex-girlfriend is now dating one of the crooked cops who broke into his residence. The whole robbery was around a supposed hidden sum of money ($200,000). I guess Lawler has made more than one former girlfriend pretty mad, huh?
“The Rise and Fall of ECW” DVD is going through the roof in terms of sales. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing a majority of the matches on the DVD. While I won’t say these are the greatest matches they could have put on the DVD, they were some of the more historic. One match that sticks out in my mind was the Steve Austin vs. Sandman vs. Mikey Whipwreck. It was very weird to watch Austin the ring without his bionic knee braces on. He did move around the ring in a very crisp manner. Another good match that was on there was the RVD vs. Jerry Lynn match (there final one I believe). Any match involving these two was instantly a classic in ECW. They wrestled for an inordinate amount of time putting on one spectacular move after another. I was a little disappointed that the Living Dangerously 99 PPV that I was at was not included in this DVD for the RVD vs. Jerry Lynn match. That match was truly breathtaking.
Lex Luger and Billy Gunn have both surfaced again in the professional wrestling world. Billy Gunn is no big surprise, but Lex Luger? Every time I see his name in print or I hear his name I instantly associate it with the untimely death of Miss Elizabeth. I know she died of an O.D., but I still associate him with her death. That may be unfair, but (if I recall correctly) she was found in his place O.D.’d and his place (again, if I recall correctly) had a bunch of illegal prescription pills. As for Billy Gunn, he’s wrestling in New England. He will be wrestling Chris Candido and Tom Prichard in a tag team match. Gunn will have a mystery tag partner. One can only assume it is Bart Gunn to “restart” their feud from the mid 90s. I, for one reason or another, don’t think Billy Gunn’s career is over. It is possible he will never wrestle in The WWE again, but I think he may show up in The NWA-TNA at some point.
The WWE and Ricky Steamboat are in a feeling out stage in terms of Steamboat’s possible employment with The WWE. Steamboat is currently trying to become an agent in The WWE. Steamboat’s in-rin skills are legendary and make many fans harken back to the days of classic matches that he put on with Ric Flair, Randy Savage, and Steve Austin (yes, I thought their matches were great). Everything that I’ve read about Steamboat points to him being one heck of an agent. It is my hope that he attains this position and that his unique skillset is put to use to better The WWE product as a whole.
After watching the beginning of RAW last night and seeing how it transcended to the ending of RAW last night, I am deeply concerned for The WWE product. The match last night was hyped as being for The World Title. And by match, I am referring to the battle royal at the beginning of RAW. I don’t know about you, but I felt slighted. I felt like The WWE held out something that was a great idea and then decided once viewers were tuned in they would snatch it away. Then, on top of it they end RAW with the one wrestler taps out while the other wrestler is pinned scenario. That ending is tired, that ending is old, that ending is bogus. The fans were excited once they saw Triple H basically knocked out of the match. They thought they were going to witness a World Title change. Instead, the fans were helped to a nice, big ol’ helping of Triple H’s ego. I was very let down by the end of the night and I felt like The WWE turned their back on their dedicated fans.
Don’t get me wrong. I think the three wrestlers in the main event put on a great match. But, ultimately it comes down to ego. Triple H has an ego the size of the continental United States. I actually thought The WWE was going to do something unique and put the title on Edge. Boy, was I wrong. The WWE needs to get out of its rut now and acknowledge its mistakes. Until that time comes, we will be subject to Triple H’s ego for years to come.
Brock Lesnar still hasn’t been signed to The Vikings’ practice squad. Honestly, I’m surprised by this. I really thought that he’d make it somewhere, especially on The Vikings’ roster. And, considering Brock’s age, he’s going to have a tough time going anywhere and making a team’s roster. He’s facing guys coming out of college who have more years of experience than he does and (more than likely) a larger skill set. It is my belief that we will be seeing Brock Lesnar back in a wrestling ring within the next year to two years. Brock’s tried what he wanted to try, but, eventually, he’s going to need to make money again. And, when that time comes, he’s going to remember what kind of money he made in The WWE and that will be one of the first places he looks.
Well, that will do it for this week. My Eagles continue to win. I’m not bragging, I’m simply enjoying this while it lasts. Anyway, I hope all of you have a safe and happy week and join me as I try to “educate people on the realness of the fakeness of professional wrestling”©. Later, Chris Dailey
