    The Smackdown Report (10/28/04)

Cole and Tazz announced Rey vs. Angle and a costume contest between Dawn Marie and Torrie Wilson.

The show began with the seven Tough Enough finalists walking into the locker room with Al Snow. They were quickly approached by the Big Show, who told them that they had to get out of the locker room until they had paid their dues. With that, Snow and the boys headed out to the ring, where they received their first challenge: cut a 20 second promo on the Big Show. Snow encouraged them to give it more effort. After all of them had cut their promos, Show came out and made them prove their toughness by taking bodyslams from the 500-pound monster. Show paid particular attention to Justice, to whom he gave an elbow drop, and Dan R., whom he gave an extra body slam and a knee to the chest. (CMV1 note- well, it was more exciting than RAW’s Diva Search, that’s for sure, but it took up too much time for my liking. It was a decent segment, though, and it made the potential new superstars do something that all superstars must do…talk in front a hell of a lot of people and then get their ass kicked).

Clips were shown of last week’s SD 6-man tag main-event.

Match 1: Chavo Guerrero vs. Nunzio
-(CMV1 note- they showed clips of the Chavo return last week. Ok, so is Nunzio a face or a heel? Somebody needs to make up their mind on that. Billy Kidman joined Cole and Tazz at the announce table for guest-commentary). Nunzio jumped Chavo at the start of the match, but the match soon morphed into back and forth action. Chavo frequently had his eyes on Kidman, which allowed Nunzio to hit a second rope leg drop at one point for a near fall. Chavo refocused, though, and got things going in his favor with a running head scissor and a spinebuster. Soon after, the two collided in a double clothesline, sending Nunzio outside and Chavo into SSP position in the corner. Kidman then hopped up to the top and tried to hit Chavo with the Shooting Star Press. However, Guerrero moved out of the way. Soon after, Chavo defeated Nunzio via the Gory Bomb at 5:51. (CMV1 rating- * ˝ ) (CMV1 note- this was a decent return match from Chavo, but was nothing special considering the two workers involved. These two seem to lack chemistry. However, it was nice to see the Chavo-BK feud continue and give us a solid potential match to look forward to for Survivor Series).

Backstage, Josh Matthews interviewed WWE Champion John Bradshaw Layfield about last week’s 6-man tag match and getting pinned by Booker T. The champ said it was the first time he’d been pinned since before Wrestlemania, but that it was no big deal since it was a tag match and he is a singles wrestler. He said he was the greatest singles wrestler of all-time, but before he continued, Book showed up and interrupted. The 5-time WCW Champion said he could see the fear in JBL’s eyes. He also called OJ a houseboy again, prompting Smackdown General Manager Theodore R. Long to make a match between OJ and Book for tonight, but with a catch. If Book wins, he gets a title shot at Survivor Series. (CMV1 note- good stuff and a feud that’s going really well. This is undoubtedly the biggest feud of JBL’s title reign for two reasons: 1) people finally have started to buy into JBL as the champion and 2) his challenger is someone people actually want to see win the belt).

Backstage, Heidenrich was shown on his cell phone talking to Paul Heyman. He wants his Survivor Series match and he needs Heyman to get the Undertaker to sign that contract.

Cole and Tazz showed Heyman at an undisclosed location with the Undertaker, begging him to sign the contract for the Survivor Series match. Basically, Heyman blamed everything that happened to the Deadman on Heidenrich. To make a long story short, Taker signed the contract, grabbed Heyman by the throat, and warned him that he had no problem taking him out. Undertaker said he would execute Heidenrich. (CMV1 note- that’s one match for Survivor Series…albeit one I’m not particularly interested in, but hey, at least we have one match).

Match 2: Rey Mysterio vs. Kurt Angle
-(CMV1 note- Jindrak and Reigns were barred from ringside). Angle made fun of Rey’s size in the early going, acting very cocky along the way. Kurt’s confidence continued to ooze when Mysterio failed to knock down the former Olympic gold medalist with two attempted shoulder knockdowns. However, Rey used some trickery when he stepped on Angle’s foot and subsequently knocked him off balance enough to take him down with a shoulder tackle. Angle then chased him around the ring in retaliation, but Rey managed to escape and send Kurt flying through the ropes in the process. Our Olympic Hero got him back soon after, though, when he threw Mysterio over the top rope with a belly-to-belly suplex (impressive spot). We then got a dreaded commercial break, but that was to be expected. Back from the break, the two performed a series of reversals before Angle got in another belly-to-belly suplex to regain momentum. He used a body slam throw to score a near fall, and then alternated his suplexes with matholds to continue to wear down the high-flyer. Looking to put Mysterio away, Angle went for a tilt-a-whirl slam, but Rey countered it into a DDT for a near fall. Mysterio followed that with a sitting Senton, a running head scissor, and a wheelbarrow bulldog. After dodging the 619, Angle proceeded to dodge Rey’s springboard cross body attempt too, which sent Mysterio into the ref. Rey still maintained control and went for another 619, but this time Reigns and Jindrak got involved to try and take away his momentum. Rey got some support, though, as Eddie Guerrero and Rob Van Dam interfered on his behalf. Not only did the two take Reigns and Jindrak out of the picture, but Latino Heat gave Angle the Frog Splash, allowing Rey to pick up the win at 13:58. (CMV1 rating- ***) (CMV1 note- another good match between those two. Oh, by the way, I want to address the idea about Angle being SD’s Triple H. You think HHH would ever put over Rey Mysterio, a 5’3” 170 pound guy? Not in a million years, brother).

Torrie Wilson was shown backstage getting ready for her contest when Kenzo Suzuki showed up and annoyed her.

Eddie, Rey, and Rob were backstage arguing with Kurt and his protégés. TRL stepped in and solved the problem by announcing a four-on-four, classic Survivor Series match between Team Angle and Team Guerrero. It will be Eddie, RVD, Rey, and a 4th member to be announced against Angle, Jindrak, Reigns, and a 4th member TBA. (CMV1 note- I love classic Survivor Series matches…SD’s side of this PPV card looks solid other than the Heidenrich-Taker match).

Cole and Tazz gave an update on John Cena, who is apparently fine (duh).

Backstage, Josh Matthews (no relation) interviewed United States Champion Carlito Caribbean Cool. Carlito, who was accompanied by a guy named Jesus (pronounced Hey-Zeus), admitted that he was at the same nightclub as John Cena the night the former champ had been stabbed, but that he had nothing to do with it. He said Cena is a thug and that is not cool. Apparently, CCC actually left as soon as Cena got there. The champ then took a bite of his apple and spit it on Josh.

Next up, it was Torrie vs. Dawn in a Halloween Costume Contest. Torrie was an fairy, Dawn was a nurse, and both looked amazing. Dawn then grabbed a mic and said she really was a nurse…for the injured Charlie Haas, her lover. That brought out Miss Jackie, who tore Dawn’s clothes off. (CMV1 note- well, that was pretty pointless, but there were a lot of nice things to look at…).

Backstage, the Big Show approached Eddie and demanded to be the 4th member of Guerrero’s team. Eddie agreed…

    The RAW Rebound aired.

Angle and company were backstage when the Dudley Boyz showed up. Spike, “the Boss,” said Angle should choose one of them as their 4th member. Kurt said that he would if they could take care of the Big Show. Spike said he had a plan.

A recap of the Tough Enough stuff from earlier tonight aired.

Match 3: Booker T vs. Orlando Jordan (w/ JBL)
-(CMV1 note- clips were shown of Book pinning JBL last week). OJ and Book traded blows early on, but the Bookerman took control with a huge clothesline and a sidewalk slam. We then got a few minutes worth of basic back and forth action before Jordan took control. JBL taunted Booker T from the outside during OJ’s offensive attack, but the 5-time WCW champ came storming back with a spin kick and a clothesline over the top rope. Book took to the outside, as well and ended up locking eyes with the champ. We then got a dreaded commercial break, but that was to be expected. Back from the break, Book hit a couple of suplexes and went back outside to taunt JBL. However, OJ capitalized on the distraction and slammed him into the ring steps twice. He proceeded to hang Book up on the top rope for a near fall, hit a sidewalk slam of his own, and then mocked Book’s five-time pose. The momentum began to shift back to the Bookerman when he rolled through an OJ flying cross body for a near fall. Book then hit a swinging neckbreaker and followed it with a one-armed flapjack. Still, though, he could not manage to stay on his feet. Jordan tried to fight back, but Book nailed him with a vicious spinebuster for another near fall, and then hit a pressing kick. Seeing that he might have to face Book for the title at Survivor Series, JBL hopped up to the apron to try and interfere, but Booker T clocked him in the face. The finish came soon after when Book scored the victory following an axe kick at 18:52. (CMV1 rating- **) (CMV1 note- I was being pretty generous because I like long matches, but I’m not sure if this match really needed to go that long. It was OK for what it was, though, and the fact that Book gets a title shot at SS is very exciting. Let’s just hope he wins the belt).

All in all…this show rated a solid 6.5/10. We now have three Survivor Series matches and they are all from the SD brand. Book vs. JBL is a good feud that fans can get into, which is more than anyone can say about any other JBL title feud. Angle’s group vs. Team Latino-Show has been building for a while now, so it’s nice to see that we’ll get a classic Survivor Series match out of it. Chavo vs. Kidman is pretty much a lock for the PPV, as well, and that should be very good. Tonight’s show was really about establishing some sort of base for the 4th big PPV of the year, and it did a good job of that. The only thing I can really complain about is the lack of matches and the time they gave to Tough Enough, but at the end of the day, one match was very good and the other two were just fine, while most of the other segments were dedicated to Survivor Series hype

This week in Smackdown history… Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle went head-to-head on the October 24th edition of SD in 2002. This was one of many matches these two had over the course of 2K1 and 2K2, but this one was different in that these two rivals were actually the WWE Tag Team Champions. The finish to the match came when Chavo Guerrero slammed Angle in the face with one of the tag belts, allowing Benoit to pick up the pinfall victory. Earlier in the night, though, Chavo and his uncle Eddie lost a tag title #1 contender match to Edge and Rey Mysterio.
