Take up thy wrestling boots and walk - Again and Again

Welcome once again to the column that gets rained off more frequently than Cricket and Tennis combined, Take up thy wrestling boots and walk. I’m the man who goes Ninja goes ninja go, Pt2, back once again to share my thoughts.

I wrote a column a couple of days ago, and posted it; however, it seems to have disappeared. It isn’t really timely anymore, so I won’t bother re-posting, and I’ll write another, albeit shorter one, because it does look like it’s been almost a month without a column from me, and that’s not good, even though in reality it’s been about three days. Anyway,

I’m generally a positive guy. The WWE has been a haven of inconsistency for years now, but I generally give them the benefit of the doubt in the hope that they will deliver. When they do deliver it’s usually worth all the waiting.

But I can’t for the life of me see the logic of putting Hardcore Holly back into the main event scene. I know this has been done to death, but it’s not really helping him any either. Normally whenever I mention Holly, I’m just going to bitch, but this time out I’m going to look at it from not only my own perspective as a fan, but from the wrestlers point of view.

Unless they actually decide to make Hardcore Holly the champion, continually giving him shots at the top guys is not going to do his career any good. Unless you were a WCW fan as well as a WWE fan, the odds are that Lex Luger wasn’t a wrestling legend in your mind, just an also ran - and I do mean legend in it’s broader sense here, we know Lex wasn’t gold in the ring, but he was booked to look like a contender in WCW.

In the WWE, he never actually pulled it off though. He was the also ran for so long, and as a result he falls through the gap - you don’t remember him when you think of the other WWE stars of the era, the Bret Hart’s, Yokozuna’s, Undertakers and Shawn Michaels.

Holly could fall under the same curse. Unless they actually have any plans to put the title on Holly, he could just keep rising to the top and dropping to the mid-card, competing in tag teams. While he probably matches him in ring skills, he doesn’t have the charisma of our current WWE champion JBL, and I don’t think Holly could make it as a main eventer - while he can be remembered as a more than competent, if not occasionally controversial midcarder. As a main event wrestler, who’ll remember him as anything more than a passing thought…. People don’t remember Mabel as anything but negative, but people often smile and laugh and talk about the likes of Duke Droese, Koko B Ware and Aldo Montoya.

Maybe I’m just being a little over zealous in my condemnation, but I think the constant recall of Holly, when in my opinion he blatantly wouldn’t be able to handle it at the top of the card is a mistake, when they could be using this air time to prime some of the younger talent, regardless of size, who may actually have a future at the top. There are several young future stars out there - I think it’s time the WWE went out of their way to make those stars.

I know this is a shorter one than usual this week, but time constraints limit me to this - I have the missing column saved if anyone is actually interested in reading it. Join me next week, when I’ll be resuming you be the booker, with our reigning champion Random Guy returning to defend against another challenger.

If you have any comments on either You be the Booker or this column, you can contact me at Takeupthywrestlingboots@gmail.com or takeupandwalk@hotmail.com

    Take care,

    Pt2
