Take up thy wrestling boots and walk - Two tickets to paradise, won't you pack your bags and leave tonight

Welcome once again to the column that makes Typhoon look like a spokesman for the Atkins diet, Take up thy wrestling boots and walk. Back once again from that strange place most of the people reading this will know as “across the pond”, I’m Pt2, the man once accused of dressing as Doink the Clown in Las Vegas. If you weren’t watching wrestling in 1993, don’t worry if that doesn’t make sense, and if you were, my apologies for making you remember the travesty that was Wrestlemania IX.

Once again, most of my time is going towards concentrating on my impending moving; so this column will also be shorter than usual, though hopefully longer than last time - we’ll see how it goes. Unfortunately, I won’t have the time to write a “You be the Booker” style column for a little while, so the contest is being shelved for a little while. All this basically means is that our contestants have more time to work on their scenario’s, while I try and work out how the hell I’m going to get all my stuff a couple of hundred miles. Anyhoo.

    Guess who’s back?

Well, well, well, it seems we’re being greeted with the return of Gangrel and Viscera. A bit of a blast from the WWE attitude past. Two members of the insanely gimmicked Ministry of Darkness/Corporate Ministry, led by our very own Mean Mark, The Undertaker. I’m really pleased to see these guys back. You know why?

Because I fucking hated their gimmicks back in the day, and I don’t care for them much more now - I’m only pleased that their back so that THEY can get buried instead of anyone actually on the roster that, god forbid, deserves to be there.

Being positive is not a crime, and this is as positive as the WWE gets. Look over the last couple of years, and every time that the WWE has wanted to feed some wrestlers to someone, what did they do? That's right, they converted the Cruiserweights into Hoss fodder. Now, for once, you just have to look at what they are doing and think that they are doing the right thing - you don’t squash your long term investments. Look how long it took Hunter to get over that loss to the Warrior at Mania XII.... he was well over at that point, ended up taking him 6 months to get back to level he was at before. And HHH was the pick of the bunch - charismatic and could put on great matches.

The pick of the bunch gets ten months as a jobber following one squash, the worst never really come back at all. Not a solid way to turn people into Wrestlemania main eventers.

So you bring people in. And it doesn’t really matter that Gangrel and Viscera were two of the worst wrestlers in a time where the “wrestling” in the WWE was at a pretty low point anyway - they tried to make big Vis a star as Mabel, and that didn’t work (Queen Mabel sounds more realistic than King Mabel, for starters - King Mabel sounds like a cross dresser more than a 500lb Black guy in a gold outfit). And lets face it, Gangrel? The Vampire warrior is never going to be proudly pinning Kurt Angle for the world title, now is he?

It’s common sense. Just because you have a massive roster doesn’t mean that you have to use half of your talent to constantly enhance the other half. The WWE have learned that, which means they’ve made a major improvement since the dark days of 2002.

    Noble Gone

Jamie Noble’s been released from the WWE. Actually, I think this is a shame. While he isn’t the best Cruiserweight in the division, he’s one of the few cruisers who can wrestle with the bigger guys and not bore the pants off me.

He can go with the lighter guys for speed, but he also has the ability to lay out a match, pace it properly, that means he can have good matches with the heavier guys as well as good spot fests. He’s not the most charismatic guy in the world, but he’s no slouch in that department either.

There are people less deserving of their place on the roster than Jamie Noble - the good thing for him, though, is that I don’t really think he’ll be out of work for any longer than he wants to be.

    Taboo

The rumour going around is that Vince McMahon’s big announcement on RAW will concern the introduction of a new pay per view event, “Taboo Tuesday”. I’m hearing a lot of opinions on the rumoured plans, both good and bad. A lot of people are saying that people won’t shell out the extra money for the shows, what with their already being so many PPV’s already.

At first, I thought you know, they are probably right. There’s fairly good chance that people won’t shell out all the extra cash for the new shows. But when I thought about it harder I had to admit that was what I thought when WCW added more PPV’s. Eventually, the WWF introduced In your house, and we know how successful that was. We still have more than 5 PPV’s a year, don’t we?

I know there’s a slightly different thing here. I know that there is a lot more PPV’s than there was then, and that some people put simply won’t be able to afford all the extra’s. However, because of it’s interactive format, if the price is kept down lower than the standard monthly PPV’s, the WWE could find a way to make these must see events.

It would be a good way to keep the other shows feeling fresh, especially if the WWE would surprise us from time to time and give us a title change on these shows. Current feuds could continue, but the fans choice would be holding the belt and could be thrown into the mix.

They would have to be willing to be flexible with this though, and also to have a real interactive-ness
about the show. If they ignore fan votes and just put their big stars in there, it will get boring very quickly. If they crush the people the fans vote for then it will get boring very quickly. Neither will make them money.

Say, for example, that The Hurricane was to beat HHH on one of these shows. You’d probably pay to see the next show, and the one after that, because of the “anything can happen” feeling you’d get from the show. Hunter is feuding with Orton, so that feud wouldn’t be over, but you could freshen it up a little by throwing the hurricane into it.

I’ve learned my lesson from predicting doom, I’m going to wait and see with the Taboo Tuesday, if it ever happens. But there isn’t a fit for just another ordinary show in the market - the WWE have to make this one special.

That’s all for this week. Thanks very much for reading, if you’d like to get in touch with me as regards this column, you can do so at takeupthywrestlingboots@gmail.com

If the news that I’m hearing is correct, than we here at Take Up Thy Wrestling Boots And Walk would like to send our congratulations to Charlie Haas and Jackie Gayda on their engagement.

See you again. Until next time, take care.
