A vignette detailing all that happened last week started the show. The standard musical video followed. JR announced that he would have an interview with Kane, while surrounded by security. Evolution was introduced to the arena, on time for once. Triple H announces that despite the no contest decision last week, he is the number one contender. He calls out Eugene, to explain to him that all he did last week was to teach him a lesson. There are plenty of people in the locker room that would try and really hurt Eugene –like Chris Benoit. Benoit is described as a jealous liar. Hunter named Eugene an honorary member of Evolution, much to the apparent chagrin of Batista and Orton. William Regal came down, to beg Eugene to not trust Triple H. Hunter turns Eugene on Regal, explaining to him the original situation with Bishoff hiring the man’s man. Hunter wants Eugene to choose between Regal and Evolution, and Bishoff interrupts. The General Manager refuses to let someone pressure his nephew, so they can wrestle it out. Regal is booked against Triple H – with a special guest referee. Someone who will call things right down the middle is chosen, Eugene. A rematch between Edge and Jericho and Orton and Batista is announced as next.
The big rematch from last week was up next. The King says that he has had a concussion or two, and Jericho would not be over his in a mere week. That is true, so why say he has one? Jericho started the match out, with Evolution over-powering the still hurt Jericho. An extremely annoying rolling alarm was playing in the background of the show. Anyone else hear it during this match? Batista was just absolutely rolling over Y2J with slams and power moves. Jericho escaped a half nelson and drop kicked Batista into the ropes, but could not get to Edge in time. Orton came in and hit a “Magnificent” drop kick, according to the King. Jericho finally got the tag, and Edge came in on fire. Edge locked on a modified sharpshooter on to Orton, and Batista came to break it up. Jericho and Edge double teamed Batista to take him over the top ropes. Edge and Jericho then gave Orton a back body drop onto (near) Batista. Edge gave chase, and Jericho hopped onto the top ropes. When Batista was in sight, Jericho dived off onto him.
When we returned, Evolution was in control once again. Edge was in the ring with Orton and Batista, who double teamed and tagged off on a beaten Edge. I have to say that Batista has improved immeasurably in recent weeks. To any fans who think he cannot work, I suggest you find a copy of last night’s Pay-Per-View. Batista placed Edge into a submission hold, and then tagged in Orton who applied a leg scissors and headlock (choke) to wear down Edge. Edge fought his way out of it and landed his vege… edgec… that move I can never remember the name of. He got the tag to Chris Jericho, who was able to take down the big Batista. He missed the lionsault, but landed on his feet. Batista attempted an Alabama Slam, but Jericho snaked under for a sunset flip. Edge added a drop kick to assure that the big man went down. Orton came in after the near fall (And very good spot) and went for the RKO, but was shoved into the corner. Batista went to clothesline Jericho just like last week, but this time he ducked, and he ended up taking out his own partner! With Orton neutralized, Edge speared Batista and Jericho hit the lionsault for the pin. Chris Jericho and Edge defeated Evolution via pin fall in an excellent match. A video replay of the Kane, Lita and Matt Hardy storyline from last week was shown.
In the Evolution locker room, Flair confronts Hunter about bringing Eugene into Evolution. Triple H says it was a part of his deal with Bishoff. Hunter agreed to get Eugene out of Eric’s hair in exchange for him to be named the number one contender. Triple H says he saw that Eugene has talent last week. He plans to use that talent to get his title back, and then Hunter promises to get rid of the special young man. A long Diva’s search clip aired. The girls are quite good looking, but I feel these are taking too much time. Lita is backstage crying, trying to get Matt to answer his cell phone. Stacy came in to consol poor Lita. Lita explained that Kane threatened to continue hurting Matt if she didn’t sleep with him. Unless I am wrong, I was under the assumption that was called “Rape.” Lita claimed that she didn’t know who the father of the baby was, or what she would do. The ring was shown to be surrounded by security, and JR went to prepare for his interview with Kane.
Jim Ross interviewed Kane. He claimed that the reason he attacked Shawn Michaels was because he was angry he didn’t win the title, and Shawn was in his way in the time. The reason he made his deal with Lita was because he knew he would never have a normal life, but he could have an offspring to mold and continue his legacy. Kane claimed that he took every precaution to ensure Lita got pregnant. When JR raised the point that the baby might belong to Matt Hardy, Kane became livid. Matt Hardy attacked from the crowd, and Bishoff came out to make the security take him away. Eric apologized to Kane, and had an announcement for Benoit who disobeyed his orders last week. He said that Benoit could only with via submission (Something he has never been able to do against Kane) while Kane can win via pin fall, submission, disqualification or count out.
Eugene was introduced as the special guest referee for William Regal’s match with Triple H. The announcers hyped up that they were the highest rated show on cable the week prior. I remember when the WWE won that every week. Eugene was constantly involved, very animated as he articulated that the breaks be clean and no closed fisted were used. Regal had the advantage for the most of the match, reminding us that he is still an incredible wrestler with perfect chain wrestling. Flair distracted Eugene long enough for Triple H to get a thumb to the eyes of William, and Flair threw in a pair of brass knuckles to Hunter. Regal knocked Hunter down and picked them up himself. Eugene saw Regal holding the weapon and disqualified Regal; Triple H defeated William Regal via disqualification. and began to cry that his mentor would do that. When Regal went to explain, Hunter knocked Regal into the special talent. Eugene flipped out, and began beating Regal and himself in a fit of anger. Flair and Hunter finally calmed him down, and took the hysterical Eugene to the top of the ramp as Regal scowled in anger.
La Résistance came out to talk about Independence Day. They said that the US oppressed millions worldwide, but failed to mention the hand-off of power that occurred today. Sylvain began to butcher the Canadian National Anthem, when Rhyno and Sergeant Slaughter interrupted. Slaughter was in excellent shape. Rhyno knocked around the tag champions in the non-title tag match, and wanted the tag as the crowd chanted for him. La Résistance blindsided Rhyno though, and cut the ring off from him. Of course that makes sense, keep the young wrestler in the ring and don’t go for the old man. Sylvain began to pound away at Rhyno with punches, but Rhyno began to hulk up and scored a spine buster. He tagged in the Slaughter, and he was on fire. Hip tosses and back body drops for everyone followed. He locked on the cobra clutch, to a big pop, but it was broken up and the Sergeant went down after a DDT. Rhyno tried to help, but he fell to the La Résistance finisher which JR called “Au Revoir.” La Résistance defeated Rhyno and Sergeant Slaughter via pin fall.
In Evolution’s office, Hunter told Eugene that it was alright to be angry. He instigated some animosity against Benoit, Kane and Regal – and claimed that Evolution would always care for him because they were his friend. Another Diva Search clip is shown. Flair was in Bishoff’s office, thanking him for something. Coach came in to talk about Eric’s vacation next week, and how he’d gladly take over as interim General Manager. Bishoff said he chose someone else. Coach thought it was Flair, which he was fine with. Bishoff revealed he chose someone else, Eugene.
On the Smackdown! Rebound the WWE attempted to paint an interesting version of last night’s atrocious Pay-Per-View. The main event was next. Benoit came out to a good reaction. Kane started out the match pounding the smaller Benoit, but Chris went right for the big man’s legs. JR called Benoit “A master of Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart’s Sharpshooter.” Kane continued to out power Benoit though, and the champion had to take a powder outside the ring.
When the show returned, Benoit was pounding Kane. During the commercial the Champion attempted to place Kane in a pair of submissions, but the monster Kane muscled out. The two went outside, where Kane threw Benoit head first into the ring post. The referee began counting Benoit out, and JR reminded us that Chris could lose the title via count out. When Benoit got into the ring Kane attempted a near fall, but the champ kicked out. Kane took Benoit outside and tried to throw him into the ring post again, but Benoit escaped and used a drop toe hold to propel Kane into the ring steps. Benoit rolled in, but the official could not count Kane out.
During the break, Kane destroyed Benoit with a vicious clothesline. Kane was firmly in control now, though Benoit continued to fight through all the pummeling he was taking. Kane called for the choke slam, but Benoit countered it into the cross face. He had it locked on, but Kane actually stood up with Benoit on his back and dropped him down. Kane sat up, and called for the Tombstone. Benoit, hopped up and nailed the three Germans and the flying head butt. He went for the pin, but the official could not count him. Benoit went back up to the top, but Kane grabbed him for another choke slam. Benoit jumped outside onto his feet, wrenching Kane’s arm over the top rope. He jumped back in and threw Kane into the ring post. He grabbed the monster and locked on the cross face. Kane struggled for the ropes, rolling onto his back in the process. Still, he could not escape the rabid wolverine, and was forced to tap out. Chris Benoit defeated Kane via submission. After the match, Kane choke slammed the victorious Chris Benoit as the crowd chanted “You tapped out!” Lita came out, all smiles, and seemed to ally herself with Kane. She handed Kane the World’s Heavyweight Championship to Kane and raised his hand. She called for Kane to attack Benoit, but then gave the Big Red Machine a low blo3w. Kane was about to give Lita a choke slam, and then realized her ploy to induce a miscarriage, and let her go. He threatened her life if she endangered the welfare of his baby again. Lita left the ring just in time for Benoit to knock Kane out with the belt, and celebrate over him.
---End--- Match Results: Chris Jericho and Edge defeated Evolution via pin fall Triple H defeated William Regal via disqualification La Résistance defeated Rhyno and Sergeant Slaughter via pin fall Chris Benoit defeated Kane via submission
