    The Smackdown! Report (6/24/04)

A recap aired of Paul Heyman's promo from last week concerning "training the big dog" and the Undertaker's attack on RVD and John Cena during last week's tag-team main-event.

Tonight's show (held in the home of the majority of the Matthews family, Orlando, Fl) kicked off backstage with Charlie Haas and Jackie warning John Cena that whatever he was about to do was suicide (Haas mentioned they were friends...I didn't know that). Cena then made his way to the ring. The United States Champion was upset about being Tombstoned by the Undertaker at the end of last week's show and very simply wanted an explanation from the Deadman as to why he had attacked the Doctor of Thuganomics. Unfortunately for Cena, his words didn't bring out the Undertaker, but rather the unusually chipper Smackdown General Manager Kurt Angle and his henchman, Luther Reigns. After trading insults with Cena, the former Olympic Gold Medalist said that since Cena suggested that Angle wanted to be just like him, and that he had won his gold medals with a broken friekin' neck, that he could surely cut a rap...He then actually cut a rap promo on Cena. Angle mentioned that he wasn't a Vanilla Ice rip-off and that Cena would lose on Sunday just like the Orlando Magic lost all last season. Kurt concluded his rap by saying that Cena would Rest In Peace, as he then announced that tonight's main-event would be United States Champion John Cena vs. The Undertaker. "Oh, and John...Word Life!" Cena looked a little uneasy about facing Taker. (CMV1 note- very entertaining segment despite the fact that both hated on my favorite player and my favorite team...who made a terrible decision in not picking Emeka Okafor with the top pick in the draft tonight...Kurt's rapping was pretty funny).

Back from commercial break, we joined in on Kurt Angle and Luther's conversation in Angle's office, as John Bradshaw Layfield walked in. Layfield more or less sucked up to Angle before telling him that he thought Guerrero was a bigger thorn in the GM's side than John Cena, and that Eddie should thus be given a match tonight to learn some respect for authority. Kurt said that he would like to get revenge on Eddie for cheating to beat him at Wrestlemania (which JBL had previously brought up), but that he obviously could not. Bradshaw then suggested that the WWE Champion face Luther, and Kurt liked the suggestion enough to book the match.

Match 1: 10-Man Cruiserweight Battle Royal (Participants included Funaki, Nunzio, Jamie Noble, Spike Dudley, Shannon Moore, Paul London, Akio, Scotty 2 Hotty, Chavo Guerrero, and Billy Kidman)
    - The winner of this match was to receive a shot at Rey Mysterio's belt at the Great American Bash. Speaking of Rey Rey, he joined Tazz and Cole at the announce table. (CMV1 note- Holy Paul London sighting Batman!). There was some exciting action during this nearly 10 minute contest, as we, on occassion, caught a glimpse of what the cruisers can do when given a chance. Paul London was very impressive during his short-stint. In the spot that eliminated Akio and Moore, Moore did a springboard hurricarana that sent himself and Akio over the top (impressive). In an another impressive spot, the finish saw Chavo Gorry Bomb Kidman over the top rope, as Guerrero claimed victory at 9:43. After the match, Chavo and Rey exchanged words and had a staredown.

    Order and time of exit
    Spike-1:18
    Nunzio-2:20
    London-3:00
    Moore-4:02
    Akio-4:02
    Scotty-4:58
    Funaki-5:18
    Noble-9:13
    Kidman-9:43

Backstage, Paul Heyman was talking on his cell-phone. Apparently, he was on the phone with whoever is building the crypt for the Great American Bash (LIVE this sunday on ppv), as he was going over the specifics for his masterpiece. Heyman re-iterated that he wanted it so that no one would be able to get in or out of the crypt, but he also wanted it to be transparent so that everyone could see what was going on inside. After finally hearing what he wanted to hear, Heyman happily got off the phone. He was then approached by the WWE Tag Team Champions and the Undertaker's opponents at the Bash, the Dudley Boyz. Bubba and D'von were wondering what exactly the Undertaker doing "the right thing" this Sunday consisted of. Heyman assured them that he had everything under control, but the Dudleyz looked skeptical. (CMV1 note- interesting subplot they have going here with making us wonder what "doing the right thing" will be. Some may argue that it means to lay down for the Dudleyz, while some may say that it means to destroy them...either way, i like this storyline a whole lot).

Meanwhile, Mordecai (who better not be getting ready to feud with Eddie G) attacked Hardcore Holly. Since Holly is not a cruiserweight, he was allowed to fight back and the two proceeded to brawl for awhile before it was broken up. Mordecai screamed at Holly that he was going to crucify him. Angle showed up and told both men he did not want anything like that to happen again, then got reassurance from Heyman that the Undertaker would cooperate in tonight's main-event. In fact, Heyman said that the Undertaker would give us yet another display of how he was under Heyman's control.

Match 2: Billy Gunn vs. Kenzo Suzuki (w/ his wife Oroko)
    - (CMV1 note-couldn't they have given Suzuki's push to Akio? Of course not, Akio isn't 6'4, 250 pounds +, or very UN-talented). The finish came when Billy hit the Fame-Ass-er, only to have Kenzo's wife throw salt in his eyes. Gunn defeated Suzuki via DQ at 3:02. Suzuki hit Gunn with his finisher after the match officially ended.

Backstage, Sable (who looked amazing) and Torrie got into an argument. Brock Lesnar's girlfriend made sure to tell Billy Kidman's big-headed wife that she wasn't the only SD diva hosting the Great American Bash this weekend. Sable thought Torrie's outfit made her look fat and Torrie thought Sable's outfit made her look easy. They then had a cat-fight.

An impressive hype-video for the JBL-Eddie Bullrope Match for the WWE Championship was shown (You've got to hand it to WWE, their video packages are excellent).

Match 3: Eddie Guerrero vs. Luther Reigns (w/ Kurt Angle)
    - Luther has his own entrance music now. Angle took off his jacket as he was jawing at Eddie. Decent effort from these two, but by no means anything special. Guerrero used some trickery out of a test of strength in the early going, as he continually kept switching which hand he wanted to lead with. Angle would trip Eddie at one point, and actually make his way into the ring to act as referee after the ref took a bump. The highlight of the match came at this point, as Angle had Luther get the title belt, but after Eddie kicked Reigns below the waste, Eddie grabbed the title and hit Luther. He then tossed the championship to Angle as the ref came to. Eddie pretended to have gotten slugged, as the ref berated Angle. (CMV1 note- I love it when he does that). When the referee turned around, Eddie magically recovered and hit the Frog Splash. However, before he could win the match, JBL came down and attacked Eddie, causing Guerrero to defeat Luther Reigns by DQ at 7:20. After the match, Guerrero and Bradshaw brawled with the Texas Bullrope. (They talked an awful lot tonight about how Eddie cheated to win the title, cheated to retain at Wrestlemania, and cheated to keep the title at Judgment Day. I certainly hope that means that Eddie will go over clean this weekend at the Bash, because otherwise they are really going out of their way to degrade Guerrero's title reign. I think they made too big an issue of that on this night, so Latino Heat needs to get a strong, convincing win this Sunday).

A promo for the Undertaker vs. the Dudley Boyz in a Concrete Crypt Match.

Recap shown of the ending of the Guerrero-Reigns match.

Match 4: Rob Van Dam vs. Rene Dupree (w/ yet another new Fifi)
    - Booker T joined Tazz and Cole at the announce table. Solid, back and forth, action from two of the four contenders in this Sunday's Fatal Four-way Elimination match for the US title. At one point, Dupree removed the padding from the turnbuckle. The finish saw Dupree counter out of Van Dam's triple shoulder thrusts in the corner and drop him head-first onto the exposed turnbuckle, allowing Rene to defeat RVD via pinfall at 4:49. After the match, Dupree taunted Booker T and yes, we did indeed get to see the French Tickler. "Tell me he didn't just do that." (CMV1 note- Booker was very entertaining as a guest announcer, as he interacted well with Cole and Tazz).

Tazz and Cole then did a rundown of the Great American Bash: JBL-Guerrero, Dudleyz vs. Taker, Fatal Fourway Elimination match, Chavo vs. Rey Mysterio, Torrie vs. Sable, and although they were not mentioned, you can guarentee Mordecai vs. Holly and Billy Gunn vs. Suzuki. (It'd be nice if a Charlie Haas match was added).

They showed a close-up of the concrete truck, which had red, white, and blue stripes. Cole and Tazz chatted about the Concrete Crypt Match and pondered what "doing the right thing" meant.

Cena made his way to the ring at 9:30, giving thirty minutes for the main-event...interesting...

Match 5: The Undertaker vs. John Cena
    - This was actually a damn good TV main-event, as I would venture to say it was easily better than any of the encounters these two had during their feud in 2003. Each man at least attempted all of their big spots and we got to see the Undertaker bring back the palming of the face move that he used so often during his original run with the Deadman gimmick. Cena used the Throwback for a change and actually used it in combination with the Five-Knuckle Shuffle for a near-fall. Speaking of near-falls, there were quite a few of them. It was interesting to note that the crowd was very hot for this match, yet also torn between the two (I'd say Cena had the edge, though). We did have a dreaded commercial break in the early going, but that is to be expected. Anyhow, the climax of the match saw the typical ref-bump. Cena hit the FU, but there was no referee to make the count. Then the Undertaker hit Cena with a chokeslam, but there was still no ref to make the count. To my surprise, the finish saw Taker nail Cena in the face with his own padlock chain necklace (CMV1 note- surprising because the Deadman gimmick doesn't usually require the use of foreign objects to win. Not to say that I'm not happy that the WWE decided to do this, though, as there's no sense in having your US Champ job clean right before the PPV). The ref came to and The Undertaker defeated John Cena via Tombstone at 22:15. A damn good, long main-event. The show faded to black for the third straight week with the Undertaker doing his classic "paying homage to the urn" pose for the former Paul E. Dangerously.

All in all...I enjoyed this show and thought it was the best Smackdown in quite awhile. The main-event was much better than I would have ever anticipated, plus the 10-man Cruiserweight match was quite fun, as well. I also really enjoyed the opening segment with Angle and Cena. The rest of the show was just PPV hype for the most part, but the majority of it was solid build-up...I'll tell you one thing about the Great American Bash: It's a lot better hyped than Judgment Day. The top four matches on the card (Eddie-JBL, Fatal Fourway, Taker-Dudleyz, and Rey-Chavo) have all gotten sufficient build to garner a better buyrate than last month's ppv. However, the bottom half of the card is where the Bash will suffer, as only the wives, mothers, and children of Mordecai, Billy Gunn, Hardcore Holly, and Kenzo Suzuki will care about their matches (in part due to their extreme lack of build-up and also because, with the exception of Mordecai since we haven't seen much of him, these guys are all either boring or have no talent)...Here's hoping for a good effort this weekend...

Next week, I will be going to Smackdown in Fayetteville, so I will be providing you with both spoilers and my usual analysis of the show later that week...Until then...Take it Easy...
