    Breaking The Walls Down

Hello all and welcome back to Breaking The Walls Down. My Phillies are in first place. My Flyers lost, but they displayed heart and character through a ton of injuries, so I’m not too upset about the loss. But, my Phillies are in first place, so that’s good. . . right? Keep it up guys! Regardless, the news has been quiet again, so I will forgo Bits and Pieces this week and jump straight into the column.

    A King In Training

Randy Orton is headed towards greatness. All signs point to that. He’s a mega-heel that you love to hate. He’s young, talented, and knows what to do to set the crowd off. In addition, he’s got a tutor. He has a tutor who has studied the greats. That tutor, Triple H.

Triple H has taken Randy Orton under his wing. I’m not sure what catches someone’s eye to say, “Hey, I’m going to take everything I learned from the greats and a thing or two of my own and teach it to this guy (or girl)”. But, it has to happen at some point. Randy Orton is showing signs that he’s learning from Triple H. His interviews are crisp and refined. His actions in the ring are already well-defined and purposeful like that of a veteran.

Either Triple H is a great teacher or he knows how to pick talent. True, he could have seen Randy Orton being a threat to his career down the road, so he decided to take him under his wing to protect his (Triple H) own career. Many conspiracy fans will buy into that, but I’m going to pass on that belief. I haven’t seen enough evidence to even begin to believe in that.

Do I think it’s possible that Triple H heard how good this guy could be and felt it would be a good idea to mold him and pass on all the knowledge he’s learned? Sure, I definitely think that’s a possibility. Whatever it is, though, it’s paying off in spades. Randy Orton is 23 or 24 years old and he’s having arguably near the same (if not the same) level of success that The Rock had at his age. As a matter of fact, I believe Orton is having more success than The Rock had at 23 or 24. Orton has the tools to go far in the business, but he needed someone to help refine his raw ability and he found that someone (or that someone found him) in Triple H.

Triple H is no spring chicken, don’t get me wrong, but he’s still got many, many years left in his career. But, beyond his in-ring career, he’s got his business life to think about. And, odds are as long as he’s married to Stephanie McMahon, he’s got a large responsibility to the WWE for the rest of his life. That being said, it makes even more sense for Triple H to start wanting to develop young talent. By the time Orton is Triple H’s age now, Triple H’s in-ring work will be down a few levels. But, Orton will be there to pick the company up and run with it. And, with all things being equal, Orton would then pass on his knowledge to an up and coming wrestler.

Randy Orton has the world of professional wrestling waiting for him. He’s lucky. Somehow, someway, he’s caught the eye of one of the most influential men in professional wrestling today. If Randy Orton is smart (and everything we’ve seen of him so far indicates he’s intelligent), he’ll take what Triple H is offering him and run with it. It’s not every day that the heir-apparent to a multi-million (almost billion) dollar company decides to take someone under their wing. My advice to Randy Orton, sit back and enjoy the ride. Greatness waits for you (and not many people can say that).

Well, that will do it for this week. I am enjoying the spring and am eagerly anticipating summer. I love this time of year. Until next time, join me as I try to “educate people on the realness of the fakenss of processional wrestling”©.

    Later,
