While you are there you can catch up on all the latest news, rumors and opinions. It’s a win-win situation. Last weekend’s IWC show was fantastic. I can’t wait for the DVD to come out so I can purchase it. I had my heart set on an interview with AJ Styles since he was going to be there and apparently I’m on a lucky streak. To hear what AJ had to say to your favorite lil’ TNA recapper on the net read my latest column here in LOP’s underground… The XY Files Vol. 25 ~Celebrate in Style- An Interview with a Champ~. Hear what he has to say about TNA’s TV deal, Flair’s infamous interview, and whether he likes the Pro or Indy wrestling circuit better. All this and more so make sure you stop by and give it a read. The Full Monty Welcome to the Asylum where another action packed evening is waiting for you. This week Team Canada gives us our PSA about cable theft. According to them crime is way out of control here in the states. We should be more Canadian-like and hit the pay button to purchase TNA because that is what Team Canada would do. We are then treated to a rousing rendition of “O Canada.” We go to Tenay, in a pre-filmed segment, who is about to make the big announcement. He talks about how the past two years in TNA have been very exciting. Tenay thinks the product has made great strides in that time working towards this TV deal with Universal, TNA, and FSN. However on June 4th at 3PM not only will an “impact” be made on professional wrestling but it will change the face of it forever. In other words, the deal is done. Check your local listings for TNA: Impact. Now we are shown the video highlights from last week. If you missed last week’s show you can catch up on it by clicking here. The camera goes to “Irish” Pat Kenney who is outside the Asylum awaiting the arrival of N-Y-C (Gilberti, Swinger & Trinity.) He is shadowboxing and telling us that he can’t wait for them to get there. We are now finally in the Asylum. The camera pans to a sign in the crowd that says “Sharkboy Ate My Fries.” (That one is for you Gerard. It’s the closest to a sighting I could get!) Match #1 Kid Kash vs. “Cowboy” James Storm Kash gets to work with the punches and chops. Storm throws him out of the ring. Outside we get more chops by Kash before he throws Storm into the ring post. They fight their way all through the crowd a la’ shades of last week and finally makes their way back again. Storm throws Kash’s back into the side of the ring and follows up by slamming his head off the steps. Next it’s a dropkick and they are both back in the ring. Series of rights by Storm and they are running through the crowd yet again. Kash grabs the announcer’s chair and throws it at Storm. More brawling follows. Whip, shoulder block, and a vertical suplex get a two count for Storm. He attempts a second vertical suplex but Kash counters with a nice crotch shot. Sit down drop by Kash and then he backs Storm into the corner. He starts biting Storm’s ear, gives a few chops and another poke to the eyes. He must have been watching some Flair tapes lately because he sure has that dirty player stuff down. Elbow hook then a fist to the face of Storm. A back elbow followed by a knee to the crotch is next. Kash stands Storm up and lands a dropkick to the shin. Now he gets Storm into a single leg crab and Storm is desperately trying to get to the ropes to break the hold. Kash sees this and drags him back to the middle of the ring without breaking the hold. Kash is whipped into the ropes but he counters with a kick to the head. Now up to the top ropes for a springboard (almost coast to coast) but Storm moves out of the way. Storm goes into a backdrop and gets a near fall. Back on their feet a clothesline by Kash followed by a mid ring powerslam for another near fall. High elevation by Storm for a back body drop but Dallas interferes by running towards the ring with a nightstick. Kash and Storm are both up again and nail each other simultaneously with clotheslines. They are both down and the ref starts the count. Slowly they fight their way up and Storm is greeted with a boot to the face. Kash grabs the nightstick from Dallas but Kash gets surprised by a match-ending superkick by Storm for the win. Winner: Superkick by Storm; wins by pinfall at 9:07 After the match, the beatdown on Storm commences. Storm manages to get the nightstick and get a few in before Dallas nails him with “the blackout.” Kash follows that with a frogsplash. D’Lo comes running into the ring but Dallas starts smacking him around and, as Tenay put it, throttling him. Sit down powerbomb by Dallas but Harris and Dusty Rhodes run in. Rhodes begins to beat him with his hat. Tenay has a sit down with Russo to discuss the upcoming TV deal with Fox Sports Network. Russo feels that they have earned it because everyone has worked hard for the past two years. Tenay want to know his response to the accusations that he is protecting the new champ, AJ. Russo doesn’t feel he is protecting him at all. All he was doing was reminding him that he does not need to defend the title every single week. According to the rulebook it is only necessary every thirty days and he thinks AJ should take a break. AJ has made it very clear that he will be a defending champion and he plans on putting it on the line weekly. Russo also comments on the behavior of Raven, Truth, and Harris. He is tired of their shenanigans and bullying. He reminds us “once you start letting the inmates run the asylum, that’s when you have problems.” Funny words coming from Russo, eh? Maybe he has changed after all? Tenay also questions him about his office being tossed last week. Russo says he knows it was Konnan due to their history together and he will be dealt with. Match #2 Monte Brown vs. BG James Monte comes to the ring and gets on the mic. He talks about 3LK and how they remind him of hyenas. According to Monte, it’s open season on hyenas. He then changes his mind and says that BG resembles a giraffe more because of his “spindly legs.” Monte meets BG on the ramp and the battle begins. BG gets tossed into and then over the railing. They fight their way through the crowd to the old dancers’ cages where BG beats Monte with a trashcan. After a few hits in the hit he drops it and they go to blows. Monte smacks BG’s head off the railing. He then grabs the trashcan lid and comes up behind BG with it. A few smacks with the lid later, they head off to the balcony all the way up to the catwalk never missing a punch. Monte gives BG a few more blows to the head, whips him into the wall, and follows it up by trying to throw him over the railing. BG gets the boot up in time to stop it and throws a few punches at Monte. They continue to brawl back down the stairs to ringside. Monte takes a few moments to get a table ready. After a bit more brawling, BG powerbombs Monte through the table. He fights back but BG manages to crotch him on the rail. A punch to the face but Monte goes for a chairshot to BG’s leg. After a few of those BG struggles back to the ring. Monte follows him continuously landing punches on the back of his head. Once at ringside, Monte throws him back in. BG attempts to stand but Monte quickly kicks him in the knee of the leg he’s been working on. More punches to Monte’s head but Monte counters with a whip followed by a pounce for the three count. Winner: Brown by pinfall at 6:29 After the match Monte gets the chair and beats BG about the face, neck, head and chest with it. 3LK, like a good stable, run in to make the save. We now go to “Irish” Pat Kenney who is still waiting for N-Y-C to show up. It appears he is in a different area of the fairgrounds since it looks more like a high school gym than arena. They show him doing push-ups. Next up is a pre-recorded interview with Don West and Desire at a local park. She’s there with her children and Sonny Siaki who are off camera. West wanted to know what it was like being injured. She goes on to give us the horrible details about how her back exploded from the suplex ten months ago. She tells us she still doesn’t know how she finished the match because the pain was so intense. Desire chalks it up to adrenaline and explains how the doctors really did not want her to wrestle again. West asks her why she decided to come back to the ring against her doctor’s advice. Her answer is simple. “I’m a mom. Some moms stay home as housewives while others have careers. My career is wrestling. I’m just doing what I have to do to support my children.” Anyone who has kids can understand that. She goes on to tell us how Siaki was there that night and for the past three years with her. He helped her do everything…shower, pack the kids’ lunches; get them off to school in the morning. Desire explains that her and Trinity have had problems in the past but reminds her that she is a competitor. Just then Trinity rushes her out of nowhere and begins attacking Desire with a garbage can. West attempts to pull Trinity off to no avail. After a few moments pass Siaki comes to make sure she is okay. All Desire wants is to make sure her children don’t see her like this. Match #3 Sonjay Dutt vs. Amazing Red Week 2 Best 2/3 advances for a chance at the X-Division title Dutt and Red are about to start the match when Kaz’s music hits. He makes his grand entrance with a security guy carrying a chair for him again. This week he can’t decide where he wants to sit and makes the poor mook move it quite a few times before dusting it off. Once he is settled the match begins. Immediately Dutt and Red lock up for a test of strength. Whips, shoulder blocks, and missed kicks by both follow for a good rally that the crowd appreciates. Back to another show of strength and Dutt forces Red down into a bridge. Red breaks the hold and goes for a deep armdrag tossing Dutt out of the ring. Double 619 by Red but he misses. The bulldog off the apron, however, does not. Outside the ring Red throws a few punches at Dutt and tosses him into the rail. Dutt returns the favor by throwing him over the rail. Dutt then springboards over onto Red who is laid out in the crowd. Red tries to get in some offense with a hurricarana but Dutt counters mid move. (Note: Dutt was at the show I went to over the weekend and to see him do this live is just amazing… the strength and agility it must take is really impressive.) Dutt gets Red back in the ring in time for a two count. Punches are exchanged in the corner before a beautiful swinging neckbreaker by Dutt for another near fall. More punches follow. Red goes to the ropes again for a modified springboard/sunset flip/powerbomb move for two. Dutt comes back from that with some inventive stuff of his own for two. The best way to describe it is a fisherman’s hold to a sit down slam. I love X-D action but recapping is a pain. These guys come up with moves faster than I can learn them. After whatever that was Dutt attempts a Hindu press but Red counters with a red spike/red star press combo for the win. Winner: Amazing Red by pinfall at 7:24. This makes the score 1-1 so it’s sudden death next week for the title Hudson is in the back with Konnan and Ron “The Truth” Killings. BG James has been attacked and no one knows who did it. After some yelling they are agree it had to be Russo. Next up is a video package highlighting the student vs. teacher feud between Michael Shane and Shane Douglas. Douglas tells him to “get ready punk” and just does his evil laugh. Guess what match is next kids??? Match #4 Michael Shane w/ Traci vs. Shane Douglas “Corporal Punishment Match” No time is wasted to start this bitter battle as we start right off with the Irish whips. Douglas is the first to break by a hip-toss take over. A series of leg sweeps by both is next. Michaels keeps Douglas down with a suplex bridge pin for two. Douglas breaks out and gets Michaels into a hammerlock. He fights out and gives Douglas a nice insulting open hand slap to the face. Elbows from Douglas and then he grabs one of the paddles chained to the post. Traci tries to stop him but Douglas tosses Michaels right over the ropes into Traci. Outside the ring Douglas throws Michaels chest first into the rails and then spits water in his face. After that he hits him over the head with the water bottle and proceeds to slam Michaels head into the post. Shane goes for a drop kick but Douglas sees it coming and turns it into a sitting power bomb. As they fight on the ropes Traci distracts the ref. Michaels is hard at work on Douglas’s shoulder. He grabs a leather strap and goes to town on Douglas who is hanging upside down on the ropes. . Double sledge onto Douglas followed by a series of eye pokes and rights. Douglas returns with a neck snap. Series of lefts and rights by both of them but Douglas stops that with an inverted atomic drop. Douglas grabs the leather strap and whips Michaels into the rope. He clotheslines him with the strap! He follows that with a belly-to-belly suplex. Traci breaks the count at two by grabbing Michaels’s foot and putting it on the rope. Douglas stiff-arms her knocking her down outside the ring and turns around for a sunset flip pin. Winner: Douglas by pinfall at 9:06 After the pin Douglas attempts to paddle Traci. He gets her as far as over his knee when Michaels comes after him. Douglas bails and Michaels gets kisses from Traci. Hudson is in the back with Russo and Konnan. They are in the middle of quite a heated argument. Konnan tells Russo he has lost all respect for him. We now go to check in on “Irish” Pat Kenney. Looks like N-Y-C have found him because they are all attacking him. Trinity is beating him with a garbage can (they must have been on sale this week as it seems to be the theme…) while Gilberti and Swinger kick the crap out of him. She empties the garbage out on top of him. There are full bottles of syrup and boxes of Lucky Charms, which they proceed to dump over him. Funny moment of the night was Don West’s comments during this. I have never even heard him come close to swearing but tonight was almost the night as he said, “I’ve seen tarred and feathered but not with lucky fffffff charms.” The way he caught himself on the “f” sound was quite funny. Next up is a video package highlighting how psychotic Goldy can be. They played more of her crazy phone calls to Eric Watts. Goldy personally addresses Russo next. She tells him he caused himself a big problem by hiring Watts back. He’s tainted her name and he’s lying about the money because she swears she never took a dime. This is all his problem and not hers. She claims to have talked to a lot of people (in other words…her other personalities) and they all agree that this is a crime; this is slander against her. Goldy is planning on getting a lawyer and she warns Russo that he has a nasty legal battle ahead of him after he cleans up this messy title picture. She also warns him that she has a guy ready to step in. The camera shows Abyss slowly coming into view and then doing the grunt/hulk up thing he does so well. We go to Tenay and West at the announcer’s table where they are discussing just how crazy Goldylocks has become. West admits that she gives him the creeps. Tenay then hypes up the X-Cup PPV at the end of the month. West hard sells it. This was all in the first hour of the show! It’s time for another video package. It is for the X-Cup PPV and goes over the details of how the matches will be set up etc. Match #5 Team Mexico (Hector Garza & Abismo Negro) vs. Team Canada (Petey Williams & Bobby Rude w/ Scott D'Amore) Earlier in the day when the official card was released Team AAA had Garza and Aguila. When it came time to announce the match it was Heavy Metal and Garza. Abismo Negro is who actually came down the ramp. I’m not sure what to make of this but Tenay and West did a great job of playing it off. They chalked it up to Team AAA’s captain using psychology against Team Canada. Garza and Williams are the first ones out. Show of strength but Garza has the advantage. Scoop slam on Williams. Quick tag to Abismo but that gave Williams a chance to catch his breath and he gets a near fall. Garza saves it from a three and now its Rude and Garza. Tenay notes that they are about the same size. Garza does his usual “wanna shake my hand?” routine and when Rude turns his head he clips the back of his legs. Double team work with Abismo. Monkey flip/ bulldog combo on Rude off of Garza’s shoulders. Garza attempts a pin but gets only one. Williams runs in to break it and now we have meyhem. All four of them are going at it, which is par for an X-Cup match. Williams falls victim to a nice headscissors/ springboard combo by Abismo and gets the roll up. Just when you thought it was over here comes D’Amore with his hockey stick to break it up. He manages to trap Abismo’s leg with it and Rude takes advantage for a three count. Winner: Team Canada Rude pins Abismo at 8:10 Jerry Lynn runs in to help Team AAA against Team Canada as they are preparing for the beatdown. Lynn and D’Amore have words. Lynn answers back by telling him that at least he is in the trenches with his men instead of on the sideline. Lynn wants just five minutes with D’Amore in the ring. D’Amore tells him that if he can beat Bobby Rude next week one on one then he can have as long as he wants with him afterwards. The catch is that if Lynn loses, he must step down as captain. Lynn wants him so bad that he accepts. Total chaos has broken out in the back. Konnan has now been attacked as well as BG earlier. The Truth is screaming and demanding to know if it was Russo. Konnan honestly doesn’t know because he didn’t see who it was. Truth is on his way to go find Russo when Heavy D tells him it is time to come to the ring for the main event. Time for the final hard sell of the evening by West. They talk up the website, gut check and trading cards. They also announce that Jarrett will be on “The Best Damn Sports Show Ever” Thursday night. He is scheduled to appear to discuss TNA’s TV deal with FSN. Tenay provides the hype for next week. While Tenay is wrapping up someone’s music starts up. No, it couldn’t be? Yes, it is the American Dream Dusty Rhodes. He comes to the ring with a mic. “Everyone wants to get on board a fast moving train. Everyone wants to jump on something that’s hot. That’s why FSN jumped on TNA.” For next week he announces a Bunkhouse Brawl where he will partner with Cowboy James Storm to take on Dallas and Kid Kash. He then takes off his boots and lays down in the ring. He takes off his hat and sets it on top of the boots and pretends to interview Kid Kash. Short jokes are always funny at someone else’s expense. We now go to another video package hyping up tonight’s main event between Harris and Styles. Harris talks about how that should have been him in the cage. He deserved it so he is coming after AJ with everything he has. AJ tells him there is something coming after Harris too. As a matter of fact, “it’s a little faster, stronger and wiser. In fact, you could say it’s phenomenal.” Hmmm, I wonder who he means… Hudson is in the back with Raven who is all wound up tonight. He asks Raven if he thinks it is delicious irony that Harris is getting a shot tonight against AJ. Raven flips on Hudson for trying to be a smart ass. “He denied me my title shot. He denied me my destiny. Now Russo is going to have me handcuffed to the ring post like some criminal. I’m a bonafide genius with an IQ of 143.” He then called Russo a feeble minded clod. He then tells him, “it’s not if I win but when and when I do I am going to drink the sweet wine of victory out of your empty headed skull. I’ve got two words for you- DONNOR PARTY! Welcome to the terrordome. Quote the Raven, nevermore.” I love when Raven is all fired up like this. He cuts the best promos. Killings and Raven are escorted down to ringside by Black Shirt security. Once there, they are handcuffed to the ringpost where they will stay until the end of the match. Tale of the Tap is next. It points out that this is AJ’s fourth title defense in as many weeks. Meanwhile, Harris has been waiting for this moment so he’s well rested. Match #6 Chris Harris vs. AJ Style for the TNA Heavyweight Championship of the World. Borash announces each of them. Fun facts he pointed out were that Harris is a 3x tag champ and AJ is a 2x Triple Crown Winner. As soon as the bell rings they begin to pace and size each other up. Lockup for a test of strength but AJ reverses to a side headlock. Hold is broken and AJ taunts him. AJ applies an armlock and changes it into a headlock. It reverses back and forth between these two moves a few more times. Finally Harris floors Styles with a clothesline. More pacing between the two. Go behind into a deep armdrag by Styles. Styles keeps working Harris’s arm that was injured by Raven a few weeks ago. They both go into an Irish whip rally. Harris goes for an inverted atomic drop. Whip, reversal, float over, and a dropkick for only a one count on Styles. Scoop slam knee drop combo on Harris’s chest for another one count. Styles lands a few good kicks to the neck of Harris and Harris returns with punches to the mid section of Styles. Takedown armbar followed by another scoop slam onto Harris. Styles goes to the ropes but Raven interferes causing him to lose his balance. He regains himself and goes up again but Harris stops him with a superplex. Both men are down now and they have both taken a beating at this point. Finally Harris manages to get up and nails AJ with a flying clothesline. Shot off in corner and Styles tries the float over but Harris slams him for a two count. Harris is frustrated so now he tries a full nelson slam but still only gets a two count. Harris sets AJ up on the ropes for another superplex but AJ reverses it. He comes up behind Harris for a German suplex variation. Harris reverses that into a sharpshooter. The cameras go ringside to show us Konnan by the Truth. He has wire cutters and he is trying to free Killings. In the meantime AJ has broken the hold and tossed Harris into the corner. Now that the Truth has been set free he is ready to interfere. He comes at AJ with a running clothesline/axe kick and nails him. Black Shirts have seen what happened and they are there to remove Truth and Konnan from ringside. Harris goes up to the ropes for an elbow drop on Styles but again… it is only a two count. They exchange punches and Harris attempts another elbow but gets caught with a spin kick by AJ. Both men are down once again. Finally after a close double count out AJ manages to get to his feet. Harris has propped himself up in the corner and AJ sees his opportunity. He lands a HUGE splash on Harris that made me wince here at home. Harris recovers and tries for a catatonic but is denied. He goes for a second attempt on Styles and finds success. One… two… it’s looking like we have a new champ but no! Raven yanks the ref out of the ring so he can’t finish the count. Apparently not only is Raven a genius but an excellent pick pocket as well because he manages to get the handcuff keys out of the ref’s pocket. Raven unlocks the cuffs and used the chain on Harris’s midsection. He goes for his infamous drop toehold and SABU runs in to take care of Raven. Blows are exchanged and they fight their way out of the ring and into the back through the crowd. The camera cuts back to the ring and we see Styles getting a two count on Harris. Raven is being stuffed in a closet by Sabu and the Black Shirts. Harris spears AJ for another near fall. Harris sets him up for another catatonic but AJ counters it with a crucifix sub hold. Another near fall but this time for Styles. Elbows, fists, forearms, and double forearms off ropes are exchanged. Wait! Now who is coming out? This time it is Kash and Dallas coming after Harris. They start attacking him with the lead pipe. AJ sees this as his chance and clotheslines Harris for the pin. Winner: AJ Styles retains by pinfall at 15:38 Okay that match may have sounded like total booking overkill but it wasn’t. All those near falls actually added so much to the match because it really could have been anyone’s pin. This was an excellent match and well worth the cost of the PPV alone. Back in the ring the cameras go to a shocked Harris. He can’t believe that AJ took advantage of that. He keeps asking him if he saw what Kash and Dallas did to him. Here comes Raven who has managed to escape from the closet. With chair in hand he runs to the ring and attacks AJ. Harris attacks Raven and the chain reaction has started. The next thing you know the whole locker room is in the ring. Russo runs out and snatches up a mic. He tells them “You all want a rematch for the title? Next week you will all have a shot. Now go kill each other…” Wow. Thanks for tuning in again this week folks. Hope you enjoyed the show if you saw it. If you didn’t see it hopefully you want to after reading about it here.
