Live from the Cow Palace, San Francisco California – 2/15/2004 By Steven “Rommel” Schaeffer
Show starts with WWE Divas Torrie Wilson and Sable coming down to the ring. They promise the fans a good show, promise to do anything to please the fans and welcome every one to No Way Out. The opening video plays, detailing the World Championship match between Brock Lesnar and Eddie Guerrero, including the involvement of Bill Goldberg and Chavo Guerrero in the story line.
Match #1 Tag Titles Handicap Match, The Basham Brothers and Shaniqua versus Scotty 2 Hotty and Rikishi © The faces were quickly in command of this match after Scotty skinned the cat into the ring to deliver a tilt-a-whirl head scissors and tag in Rikishi. The big Kish brought Shaniqua into the ring and went for the stink face, but Doug made the save. Scotty came in the ring and he and Doug collided, bringing both men down. Scotty shot up and went for the worm, but Shaniqua clothes-lined him from the ropes. This allowed the Bashams to work over Scotty and tag in Shaniqua. She gave Scotty a body slam and proceeded to gloat. When she tried to stand Scott back up he tried to choke her, so she gave him a hammer to the back and tagged her men back in. Scotty did everything possible to crawl to his partner, but the Bashams would not let him. Shaniqua tagged in and went for a power bomb, but she was flipped out of it. Scotty got the tag to Rikishi, who cleared the Bashams and gave Shaniqua a snapmare. He dragged her to the corner for the Bonzai drop but the Bashams hit a double team to take him off the ropes. Shaniqua almost got the pin off that, but he recovered just as Scotty took both Bashams outside the ring. Shaniqua called for the clothesline but was given a Samoan drop, followed by a Bonzai drop and the three-count. *3/4
The announcers pondered the arrival of Goldberg, who was not in his seat. A video package of Jamie Noble’s Feud with Nidia the no-sighted (Sometimes the forums crack me up) is shown.
Match #2 Boyfriend versus Girlfriend blindfold match, Jamie Noble versus Nidia Jamie argued with the ref over putting on the hood to start, and Nidia charged her. She dodged out of the ring. From here the story of the match was that Nidia would use hit and run tactics on Noble. She would jump up and down to make noise, leading him where she wanted. Soon, she started taunting him, pulling down his pants and waving her arms a step behind her. Jamie kept trying to get a hold, grabbing a pulling free a handful of Nidia’s hair before she fled. Nidia went to the top rope, and while the ref was distracted Noble lifted off his hood, saw her, and attacked. A body-slam from the top followed by a forward-facing chokehold ended the match. *
Kurt Angle is shown attacking the big show and John Cena last week on Smackdown! Josh Matthews interviewed Angle backstage, who refused to explain himself. He said he was jumped from behind last week, and while he doesn’t know who attacked him it had to be either John Cena or The Big Show. John Cena came up, said that he would attack him – but he would do it right to his face. He slapped Angle and the two brawled to a pull apart.
Match #3 The World’s Greatest Tag Team versus The APA Bradshaw is selling the shoulder damage he suffered at the hands of Shelton Benjamin (The black one) by wearing a bandage on his arm and not his shoulder. The APA was dominating, but Charlie Haas (The white one) escaped a shoulder block in the corner and the WGTT proceeded to attack Faarooq’s arm for a good deal of time. Haas was hit by a spine buster though, which allowed Bradshaw to come in a house of fire. He cleared out Haas and hit the power bomb on Benjamin for a two when Charlie made the save. Faarooq fought with Charlie to the outside, but Haas reverse Irish whipped him into the ring post. In the ring, Shelton was eating the last call from the second rope. Charlie Haas came in to eat the Clothesline from Hell, which hurt Bradshaw as well – allowing Shelton to hit a sidekick on Bradshaw from his blind side and scored the victory. **
The suspended Goldberg was shown entering the arena and taking his front row seat. A video package of his issues with Brock Lesnar is shown. When we come back Bill is hugging some kids. Paul Heyman enters, and asks who the hell Bill thinks he is. He remembers who he is, and reminds Bill who he is. Then he points out the superiority of Smackdown! to Raw. In a long rant, he threatens that if Bill Goldberg should do anything but be a fan, he will have him arrested/fired/dipped in acid/sold to monkeys. Brock Lesnar enters without music, and Heyman tells everyone – “Here Comes the Pain.” Brock offers Bill to come get him but Paul refuses to let him. Lesnar says Stone Cold Steve Austin told Bill not to do anything Stone Cold wouldn’t do. Well, Stone Cold wouldn’t attack Brock, Brock says, so Bill should just sit there like the bitch that he is. That got Bill up and into the ring, and he and Brock took off their shirts to get ready to fight. Heyman distracted Bill, so Brock jumped him. He went for the F5 but Goldberg escaped and hit a Jackhammer. Paul began running in circles around the ring, screaming for security. Bill surrendered peacefully to them and they led him out of the arena while his music played. Afterward, Hardcore Holly’s music hit and he chased Lesnar out of the ring.
Match #4 Hardcore Holly versus Rhyno The two brawled on the ramp and into the ring, where they immediately went into a rest-hold. Afterwards the two brawled for a little bit, and then went into a rest round. Then they brawled some more until both men were knocked down. Midway through the match the commentary switched the Spanish announcers, which kept me from falling asleep. Hardcore was gored and rolled out of the ring, nearly being counted out. When he came back in, Holly hit the Alabama Slam out of no where and pinned Rhyno. I played Metroid: Zero Mission during this match 0*
An advertisement for The Monday Night War DVD was shown. The TV Smackdown! advertisement was shown. The video package that shows how Chavo Guerrero got to No Way Out a man alone is shown, and how he can to feud with Rey Mysterio Jr. The gong hit, the creepy video played and it declared that in twenty eight days the dead will rise again.
Match #5 Cruiserweight Championship match, Chavo Guerrero Jr. w/Chavo Guerrero Sr. versus Rey Mysterio Jr. © w/Jorge Pias The announcers did their best to explain who Jorge was, but in my case it was a lost cause. I think they should bring in Shocker and have him do his ten-minute long suit and tie promos in Spanish. Both men using speed and high-flying moves to attack the other in rapid fashion, and the champion had the early advantage. Chavo took control, however, after what I believe is called an inverted back body drop. Rey hit the 619, but Chavo Sr. pulled him off the ring apron. Jorge took offense to this and knocked Chavo out with one of his famous left hands. The referee threw him out of the arena for this. When Chavo Jr. went to check on his father Rey hit a springboard to the outside and took him back in the ring. Another springboard, this time in the form of a leg drop, got a two-count. The Champion smelled blood and began attacking the challenger and going or the pin right afterward. Chavo was on the top and Rey was climbing behind him, seemingly for a victory roll or hurricanrana. Chavo lifted him up and dropped him on his knee and the two flew down. Since the match took place in a heavily Hispanic state Chavo put Rey in an abdominal stretch. They did the great spot where you attempt to pin your opponent with a test of strength and his bridges his body to avoid the count. When Chavo went to jump down on his stomach to force his shoulders down Rey got his knees up. Chavo stood, lifting Rey by the fingers and the legs which were still pressed to his body. Rey spun around and attempted a victory roll. That took all of two seconds, and was breath-taking. From here the action was back and forth, with the two doing moves as mundane as a mere perfect standing moonsault to maneuvers I have never seen before. After a clinic on how good a cruiserweight match can be Rey hit another 619 and went for a springboard senton but Chavo rolled through and grabbed the half-crab. Mysterio got to the ropes, but Chavo dragged him off. Today the rule was you can’t do that – it changes every week. Rey went to the top, but Chavo Sr. had finally recovered and pushed him off. Chavo held some tights and we have a new Cruiserweight Champion. ****
An advertisement for Mick Foley’s Greatest Hits and Misses shows. I tried buying it twice and it was sold out. Backstage, Josh Matthews interviews a celebrating Chavo in front of Eddie’s dressing. He says Eddie is an addict, he has a monkey on his shoulder and he is a loser. A tale of the Tape for the #1 contenders match is shown. John Cena’s career highlight thus far is his PHD in Thuganomics.
Match #6 #1 Contenders three way Match, Kurt Angle versus The Big Show (US Champion) versus John Cena. John Cena entered last and hit one of his trademark freestyles. At first Kurt Angle and The Big Show fought, while John Cena watched and cheered from the corner. Angle forced him to fight while he watched and cheered from the corner. This wore on both men and soon they were fighting while The Big Show watched in amazement. Paul Wight tired of this and proceeded to beat both men up, throwing Angle into Cena at one point. The two smaller men tried double teaming the Giant, with Angle trying to suplex Show outside (Failing, so it looked as though he were humping him) but only succeeded at delivering a stun gun. Angle and Cena finally got to fight with one another now, but after the three German suplexes Show returned. He threw Angle outside and pounded on Cena for a while. Cena manages some offense, and stunned the big man with a flying elbow off the top rope, which Angle matched with a missile drop kick off the opposing ring post. Cena scored an FU on the Big Show, but Angle brought up the count. Kurt scored the Angle Slam, but Big Show kicked out. Cena tried to FU Angle, but Kurt reversed it into the Angle lock. Big tried to choke slam everybody – and I lost track of the action. Angle had Show in the Ankle lock, but the Giant rolled out of it. Cena had Angle ready for an FU again, but Big Show attacked his bad leg. Angle through Big Show over the top to the outside, dragged Cena to the center of the ring and gave him the same cinched in leg lock he gave Benoit at the Rumble last year to Cena’s bad knee. He tapped out immediately. ***
John Cena wears wrist bands that have “Atari” on them. He is my new favorite person. An advertisement for WWE Originals is shown. The passion commercial for Wrestlemania is shown. The Tale of the Tape for the main event is shown. If this were a boxing match, let’s just say I wouldn’t place money on Eddie. A video package showing how Eddie came to meet Brock Lesnar is shown.
Match #7 World Championship Match, Eddie Guerrero versus Brock Lesnar © We all know how this went. Everything Eddie did, every technical and high-flying move he attempted, was countered by the pure power of Brock Lesnar. Eddie tried a springboard head scissors, only to get dropped on his head and discus-tossed away. Brock gave Guerrero his third belly-to-belly suplex of the match, and Eddie rolled out. Eddie tried to get in, but was repeatedly tossed off the apron. Finally, Eddie gave Brock a shoulder to the gut, a stun gun and pulled his leg to the ring post. He threw the champ’s knee into the steel twice, but was pulled shoulder first into the post when he tried a third. Lesnar threw Eddie around some more and placed Eddie in a rear naked joke. Latino heat escaped via a jawbreaker, and then escaped a guerrilla press for a drop kick. He would then eat a clothesline, and the champion was one again in control. Finally, the Champion made a mistake. He went for a high knee in the corner, but Guerrero ducked and Lesnar sailed over. Eddie took a risk and it payed off in the form of a pescado. Latino Heat worked over the leg, but a sudden hot shot on Eddie brought both men down for what was easily the fiftieth time in the match. When Lesnar got up he tried to taught Eddie, who sat up and grabbed a STF on the champion. The crowd went wild, at that, and began chanting “Eddie.” Eddie caught a second wind, and was continuously attacking the champion. Every time he went for a hold, however, Lesnar was able to use his power to fling Eddie off. Eddie had slowed Brock now, and was clearly the faster of the two. A flying head scissors took Brock down, and after a long period of trying Guerrero had the figure four leg lock applied. Brock got to the ropes, so Eddie applied a Texas cloverleaf followed by a second STF. Eddie tried a hurricanrana but it was countered into a brutal spine buster. Brock tried another rear naked choke. The crowd chanted for Latino Heat as he fought his way out. Just as it looked like he would escape Brock gave him a gut-wrench suplex. Suddenly, Eddie came back – giving Lesnar three head butts in a row and then a drop kick to the knee of Lesnar. He hit the head scissors and then hit three snap suplexes in a row on the monstrous Brock Lesnar. He called for the frog splash, but the champion moved out of the way. Lesnar stood and delivered the F5, but Eddie’s feet knocked the ref out. Wow, that is the first ref bump of the evening. Lesnar went to bring his title into the ring, but Goldberg appeared and speared Brock. Eddie rolled on top of Lesnar, but the semi-conscious official’s count was too slow and Lesnar kicked out. Eddie grabbed the title, measured the Champion up, and missed the belt shot. Brock set up the F5, but Eddie countered the spin into a DDT. He climbed the ropes, hit the Frog Splash… and we have a new champion! The champ celebrated with his family and fans to end the show. ****1/2
