WWE Velocity Report
July 26, 2003
By David Orton
Josh Matthews and Ernest "The Cat" Miller introduced the show and plugged Vengeance.
ORLANDO JORDAN vs NUNZIO
Nunzio and the rest of the FBI should stay here on Velocity for now. Putting them on Smackdown is like inviting the viewers to grab the channel changer and see what else is on. Orlando Jordan still hasn’t impressed me much with his in ring work. Anyways, Nunzio got caught with OJ’s black ice for the surprise 1-2-3.
WINNER: Orlando Jordan at 5:41
STAR RATING: *–Passable Velocity match.
The aired the WrestleMania recall of the Undertaker beating Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka at WrestleMania XII.
Highlights aired of the Guerrero/Benoit showdown at Smackdown. They then plugged their match at Vengeance. If they give this match enough time (at the very least 20 minutes), this has the potential to be a match of the year candidate. However something tells me that (like most matches that feature great wrestlers in the WWE) this match will be kept short to allow time for more of the McMahons. We will see I suppose.
KANYON vs RYAN SAKODA
Sakoda has a decent look. At 2:15 Kanyon hit a great looking superplex from the apron that Sakoda sold well. Kanyon hit the Flatliner out of nowhere to score the victory.
WINNER: Kanyon at 5:06
STAR RATING: *–Not a bad match for Velocity
More Stephanie McMahon highlights from Smackdown. Since when did she become a Diva? She has the most disproportionate body I have ever seen. Throw her in the ring with the Incredibly Aging Sable and it looks more like a nightmare to me. I can’t believe they replayed the whole McMahon/Sable segment from Smackdown. They are really shoving this stuff down our throats.
They replayed the cool video Vengeance rundown from Smackdown.
Highlights of the Smackdown main event. I can’t decide whether they’ve placed more emphasis on the Triple Threat main event at Vengeance or the Sable/McMahon match.
SPANKY and FUNAKI vs THE BASHAM BROTHERS
How could anyone in this world find Shaniqua attractive? The Basham’s again licked her boots before the match, which is downright ridiculous. I’ve seen about enough ugly "Divas" for one night. Good action in the ring. Spanky got more "Spanky" chants and looked good. Lots of high flying and a few hot tags got the crowd into the action. In the end, Shaniqua distracted the ref which allowed the Basham’s to hit their finisher on Funaki and get the 1-2-3.
WINNERS: The Basham Brothers at 7:03
STAR RATING: **–Best Velocity match in a long time. Spanky wrestles the way everyone on Velocity should wrestle. You can see that he knows that this is his time to shine, and he wrestles his heart out every match. Hey may not be big but he can sell, and he’s a good high flyer. If only he didn’t look like a 12 year old...
OVERALL SHOW: Good show, but too much Vengeance hype. I understand that this is the last Velocity before the Pay-Per-View, but Sunday Night Heat is the show that should be used to promote Vengeance, not Velocity. Still we were able to see some good matches that went longer than five minutes, which is a big plus. Again, Matthews and Miller were way off this week. Miller sounds like a drunk person who is too out of it to think and speak coherently. There are so many people out there who could do their jobs about a million times better. Why not seek them out? What is the use of putting a washed up wrestler from WCW Thunder like the Cat on a WWE program? Ross is getting old, Lawler just isn’t funny anymore, Coachman is awful, so the WWE should seriously be looking for some new announcers for their future, and there would be no better place for an announcer to start out than on a B show like Velocity or Heat.
