Gimmicks Die Hard - Rumble Thoughts

Short and sweet today. It’s been a while since I penned an edition of GDH, but January always seems to be the “bitch” month when it comes to doing University work. As there is a Rumble around the corner, it’s time for a new edition.

Clear it off my Chest – Rumble Thoughts

Royal Rumble. There seems to always be a certain element of excitement when the annual January WWE PPV comes around. Maybe it's because it's the first one of the new year, or that it always seems like a good opportunity for the WWE to give itself some breathing space, by turning their product around.

Or, more than likely, it includes 30 WWE Superstars all wrestling in the ring for 60 Minutes and more, to determine 1-half of the main event in Wrestlemania.

Nowadays it seems the WWE is moving away sharply from it's traditional gimmicked PPV's. The Survivor Series has been tampered with in the last 10 years, that the recent offering did not even have the traditional elimination matches anymore. The "King of the Ring" tournament has also been modified, cut down, extended, cut down again, until the actual PPV only features 3 matches from the actual tournament.

However, the Royal Rumble has always stayed the same, apart from a few allowances for time constraints. Which seems to be the case again for this year's offering. 2 minutes being cut down to 1 minute, does actually take the gloss off the match, but I guess you can't have everything. Though, this year, for the first time - the Rumble is going to take a huge change of direction.

With 15 wrestlers from the RAW roster and 15 wrestlers from the SMACKDOWN roster, logic would say that the sheer depth of the Rumble participants would make this the best Rumble ever.

    But will it be?

With Brock Lesnar almost guaranteed the favorite to win the Royal Rumble, it comes as no surprise that many fans are casting their doubts on the legitimacy of the actual Rumble itself. With only 2 months away from Wrestlemania, fans already have been providing different booking approaches that the WWE will take. Does this take the fun out of it, or give us more of an appetite.

I hope that the WWE do not drop the ball on this PPV. They have had a good record thus far with the Rumble PPV's, and now is almost a even more crucial opportunity to make sure they start off the year with a bang, because it seems every fault that is etched on the hands of the WWE, is magnified in epic proportions.

With that all being said, I would love to see Brock win the Rumble, but maybe it would be nice to see Angle play a part in a possible demise, hence the continuation of their much-sought after feud by many fans. The HBK-Jericho feud is also something that for a long time, I had always dreamed about seeing as soon as they began to compare the 2 superstars at their peaks. Jericho is in top form at the moment and maybe the program he is about to have with Shawn will help Jericho in leaps and bounds with his excellent heel character.

Not sure what to expect with The Undertaker, but in any instance, to me personally it does not matter what "gimmick" he uses on-screen, it's still the same person "behind the mask" and seeing as the Smackdown main-event scene seems to be rocking with enthusiasm at the moment, it will almost definitely be spoiled if the "should be retiring.." superstar makes yet another claim for an undeserving top-spot.

Just when you honestly think there is an end in sight to the Torrie-Dawn feud, it just keeps going on and on. The 10-15 minutes they are going to waste refreshing our memories of this feud, and the actual match, could have been put to constructive effect by not having to tinker with the "2-minute" delays between each of the participants entrances in the Rumble. What also disappointed me that after making such a poignant tribute to Owen Hart, they are treating Al Wilson's "death" as some kind of sitcom comedy.

It's not amusing, and it certainly serves no intention. Vince never learns.

When Austin came back from neck surgery, he surprised many that he even made a return. He did become the WWE Champ once again. Benoit was in the same boat, but yet again he is "shunned" when it comes to recognising him truly as one of the best wrestlers that the WWE has ever had. Benoit deserves the WWE Title, it's just such a shame that I would love to see Angle hold onto the title. With that being said, Angle retaining would also help the development of Team Angle, as a very serious attempt to create a stable, which does serve a purpose.

Steiner certainly looks a lot different, since his last Rumble appearance back in the mid-90's. Back then, I always used to think he was quite a good wrestler. What is of him now, is there anything left in the "tank"? - God only knows that if we're relying on Hunter to carry Steiner to a good match, we might as well hit our heads against the wall.

All in all, Rumble's rarely disappoint, so good luck WWE. You need it!

    Brawl-4-All

On Sunday, we are presenting HIW's latest PPV entitled "Brawl-4-All". The significance of this PPV is that we have attempted to hold a "Royal Rumble" match with the stars of the fed, though with a twist. The wrestlers write their part. Intricate and complex it was, but amazingly we pulled it off.

The result? A 300 page match, where even the last 2 wrestlers who were left in the ring, still do not know the result. It promises to make history in e-fedding and hopefully people who are serious about e-wrestling, can appreciate the work effort that has gone into this huge event. The PPV will take place this Sunday, and HIW can be located at the link below.
