WWE SMACKDOWN! - 6/26/03
Location: Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York (taped 6/24)
Announcing: Michael Cole & Tazz
SmackDown! kicked off in MSG with John Cena coming out and calling himself a legend. Cena said he'd be back in MSG, headlining at WrestleMania XX. To commemorate his debut a year ago, Cena decided to call out any rookie and he was answered by Orlando Jordan.
John Cena defeated Orlando Jordan. During the match, Cole and Tazz ran down some of the credentials of Jordan; he was an amateur boxer and also has some of an amateur wrestling background from college. Jordan got the quick start on Cena and hit a crossbody off the top rope but Cena rolled through and held the tights for the win. Afterwards, Cena delivered the FU to Jordan.
Then, The Undertaker rolled out and got in the ring as Cena bailed. Taker showed some repsect to the rookie before going to commercial.
The Undertaker & The APA defeated The FBI. Decent match with the Undertaker and Ron Simmons trading turns being the "face in peril." Stamboli and Palumbo worked back anf forth with Nunzio jumping in for a shot here and there. Later on, the match deteriorated into a brawl with Bradshaw hitting the Clothesline From Hell on Stamboli to get the win.
An "Earlier Today" segment was shown with Jamie Noble and Nidia. While giving an autograph to a lady who wanted directions to the subway, Noble and Nidia were approached by an attorney who said Noble's Aunt Lucille had died and had left him with $827,000. Noble and Nidia read over the will and became estatic and Noble told Nidia to give the attorney one of those "special kisses" and she went after his pants in a funny moment. Noble said "not that special" and Nidia gave the attorney a big kiss and then jumped into Noble's arms as he said they were going to Applebee's to celebrate.
Backstage, Sable tried to get Vince McMahon in the mood but he said, "Not tonight," because he had something else to take care of.
Matt Hardy defeated Rikishi in a first round United States Championship Tournament match. Rikishi controlled for most of the match and hit a nice sit-out piledriver but Hardy kicked out. Rikishi went for the Banzai drop but Hardy got his knees up and recovered to hit the Twist of Fate, only to have Rikishi kick out. Hardy then tore the top turnbuckle off, "exposing the steel" and after Rikishi was whipped into it, Hardy hit another Twist of Fate to advance in the tournament.
Eddie Guerrero & Tajiri defeated Sean O'Haire & Roddy Piper to retain the WWE Tag Team Titles. O'Haire worked most of the match and dominated in some parts with a lot of power moves. Piper tagged in once and slapped Tajiri around a little bit. Late in the match, everyone was in the ring and as Guerrero took out O'Haire, Tajiri spit the mist in Piper's face, allowing Guerrero to hit the Frog Splash for the win.
After the break, Vince McMahon made his way out and wasted no time in calling out Stephanie McMahon and Zack Gowen. McMahon talked about Stephanie first and apologized for taking her innocence when she was young. McMahom admitted to having Stephanie help him "close some deals" and said even though he could never forgive himself for it, he hoped Stephanie might someday. Vince then moved onto Gowen and said he realized something last week and has also learned something this week. Vince said he wanted to be Zack Gowen. Vince mentioned that Zack has looked death in the eye and spit in her face. Vince then asked Gowen to forgive him, but he refused. Vince tried again, this time demanding Zack to accept the apology, but again, Gowen said no. Gowen said he had gone through things in his life that would make Vince cry and he said all he wanted was the one thing he's been fighting for all his life and that is a WWE SmackDown contract. Much to everyone's surprise, Vince agreed and said Zack could have a contract. But McMahon refused to just hand it over, he wanted Zack to earn it and said he could do so by joining a very exclusive club, the Vince McMahon Kiss My Ass Club. Vince dropped his drawers and waited for Gowen to kiss his ass, but just as it seemed like Gowen was going to, he lowblowed Vince and he and Stephanie walked out of the ring.
Earlier in the night, we had seen Billy Kidman sitting in the crowd, decked out in stylish clothes, sunglasses and sporting a new haircut as well as two lovely ladies to his sides. Josh Mathews had a word with Kidman who said he wasn't all that happy to be back. He said he just wanted to get back in the ring and do what he loves.
Rey Mysterio then came out and joined Cole and Tazz for commentary on the next match.
Ultimo Dragon defeated Shannon Moore. Dragon's entrance is very cool, lot of fire. The match itself wasn't too bad. Not too much offense from Moore, with Dragon showing off almost all of the styles he's capable of, lot of martial arts mixed in there as well. Dragon hit the Asai moonsault on the outside and then came back in the ring and hit a wicked finisher (he locked Moore in a neckbreaker position but then flipped himself backwards and landed on his backside and dropped Moore alongside him, very cool move) for the win. Afterwards, Mysterio stepped in the ring to congratulate Dragon.
Big Show, Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin defeated Kurt Angle, Mr. America & Brock Lesnar. Kurt started the match off and hit a few nice suplexes before winding up as the beat down man for Haas and Benjamin. Angle eventually tagged in Lesnar who cleaned house for a bit until Show tagged in and took control. Lesnar then scored a tag to Mr. America who suplexed Show but couldn't get the pin. Finally, Angle was tagged back in and he hit suplexes left and right. Eventually, the match turned into a Pier 6 brawl which culminated with Lesnar and Angle hitting thier finishers on Haas and Benjamin at the same time. However, Show came back in and hit a double chokeslam on both Lesnar and Angle. Hogan then hit the big boot on Show but as he went for the legdrop, Vince came out, dragging Gowen along with him. Vince kicked Gowen in the gut and then decked him a few times in the face which distracted Hogan, allowing Show to hit the chokeslam for the win.
Afterwards, Vince continued to beat down Gowen until Stephanie ran out and got in between the two. Vince then said Gowen would have his chance at a contract next week in a handicap match, putting himself and Stephanie against the Big Show. SmackDown then ended with Show trying to look (and laugh) as manically as possible and Vince celebrating.
