Update on LOD to the WWE, WWE admits Mr. America is Hulk Hogan, more
Submitted by Matthew Tremley on Thursday, May 22, 2003 at 2:43 PM EST
- As it stands right now, it doesn't look like the LOD will be offered a contract by the WWE. Officals felt that their tryout match and the backstage reaction went very badly. Another sign that the LOD haven't been offered a contract is that they're still accepting indy bookings right now.
- The WWE goofed up again with the whole "Is Mr. America Hulk Hogan?" storyline. In the early Smackdown previews on the offical site, they put this up:
Mr. America got his first win Sunday at Judgment Day, and Mr. McMahon must be more furious than ever. Hogan has found an unlikely ally in a young, one-legged fan named Zack. Will Mr. McMahon and Rowdy Roddy Piper came after the two full-force? Find out on SmackDown!
However, shortly after this was put up, the WWE corrected the preview and changed "Hogan has found an unlikely ally in a young, one-legged fan named Zack." to "Mr. America has found an unlikely ally in a young, one-legged fan named Zack." This is the second goofup with the Mr. America storyline that the WWE.com people have created. The first was having Mr. America's t-shirt under Hulk Hogan's merchandise category on WWEShopzone.com. They quickly fixed that once they realized their mistake.

- Lance Storm has updated the commentary on his offical site. In this new edition, he talks about the recent tribute to Ric Flair after Raw went off the air this past Monday.

MLW Backstage Report for May 22: Kojimania runs wild and more! by Andy Vineberg
Welcome back MLW fans to another informative and exciting Backstage Report.
First, I want to give you my thoughts on this past weeks TV show. I enjoyed this week's TV – as it had a little bit of everything. It offered a technical high-flying battle between "the Amazing" Fuego Guerrero against Michinoku Pro Wrestling's Ikuto Hidaka then went to a hardcore war as Terry Funk went one on one with Steve Corino that is until the Horsemen interfered. The reason I truly believe that MLW Underground is such a great show is because it offers such a diversified style of wrestling – that being hybrid!!! The highlight of the show for me was listening to Raven as the show closed and his speech about the no-showing of Vampiro. He had some pretty harsh shoot comments for Vamp and his true feelings about the guy surely were exposed.
Now, as far as next week's MLW Underground TV show: It doesn’t get much better than this and you don’t even have to pay $34.95 to check out these pay-per-view caliber matches as Masato Tanaka takes on Mike Awesome for the #1 contender spot for the MLW title. I’ve seen all there matches they have had previously here live in the U.S. but this one is by far one of the best. After speaking to Mike Awesome following this match he agrees, this one is a must see! Also, you will witness Raven vs. CM Punk this week on the Underground and with these two guys you never know what you are gonna get. Now, this show my friends, is the real deal and is must see… MLW TV!!
Expect a few new faces in MLW on Underground TV. You never know who may show up.
Look for more MLW action on TV in Japan this summer.
A lot of fans have been wondering when they can catch MLW on Fox Sports Digital Atlantic Net as it airs at various times in different markets on different days. To ensure you don't miss out on your weekly dose of Underground TV, be sure to log on to www.TVguide.com for your local listings.
There has been a lot of talk oversees about Satoshi Kojima's status with All Japan Pro-Wrestling. Regardless of whether the chatter is of substance or not, Kojima is in MLW and any possible business overseas will not impact Kojima's status stateside with MLW. Kojimania is here to stay folks.
Hybrid Hell will be MLW’s second annual event, joining King of Kings. We will have a task of making the name Hybrid Hell mean something special at our first annual on June 20th and you can bet we will exceed your expectations and set the bar for the future for these annual events. And don't forget that Hybrid Hell will be a national TV taping for Underground TV - seen nationwide on DirecTV, the DishNetwork, and Fox Sports Digital Atlantic Net.
Speaking of King of Kings, there is a great deal of talk that this year's King of Kings will take place in November and you know how great our last one was, with the first La Parka-Sabu match and debut of Mike Awesome. Check it out if you have not already!
Los Maximos stopped by the TV studios yesterday and were outrageous as ever. These two young men are truly some of the funniest guys I’ve ever met in the business. Some of the promos you will be seeing in the near future on the Underground are some of the greatest bits I’ve ever seen. They have the passion and determination to make it here in MLW and do whatever it takes to make the company a success not to mention they are extremely talented in the ring.
Terry Funk has been doing an extensive amount of preparation for his upcoming and highly anticipated no ropes barbed wire grudge match with Steve Corino on June 20th. By the way, ringside tickets are sold out! However, you can still purchase excellent seats at the reserved level for only $15 and general admission for $10. You can see 3 plus hours of action and be a part of a national TV taping for $10 - the same price of a movie ticket! No one can touch this sort of deal with the talent on board for MLW. Tickets can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets, by calling 954-523-3309 or online at:http://www.ticketmaster.com/artist/866232.
MLW continues to aggressively scout and recruit talent and are in talks with many talented wrestlers.
Steve Corino and CW Anderson will be spending a good part of the next 2-3 weeks touring with Zero-One in Japan. The Extreme Horsemen have caught on huge over in Japan, with fans enthusiastically cheering and booing the vile threesome every chance they get. Speaking of the Horsemen, there's nothing quite like experiencing the rise of these Horsemen in the south where their feud with the legends of MLW has become a focal point of MLW.
For those of you who do not receive MLW Underground TV in your neck of the woods, now you can! MLW has a special offer to fans through out the U.S. who want their Underground TV with a subscription plan which will allow fans to purchase 6, 12 and 18 month plans. Get in on the Underground and start from episode 1 so you can have the complete MLW TV episode. Visit: http://www.mlw.com/view/v.php?v101 for more details.
In just a few weeks MLW will be revealing its new Global Tag-Team Crown championship belts and from what I have heard in the office, they look top notch!
The Samoan Island Tribe, Samu and newcomer Mana have been training extensively at Afa the Wild Samoan's (Samu's father) wrestling training center in Allentown, PA. Expect this 747 pound duo to become even more potent and violent in future matches here in MLW.
MLW continues to upgrade its production efforts for TV with new banners and professional lighting, both of which you will see in action for the first time on June 20th for the Underground TV tapings.
MLW is looking for dedicated people to join the new Fort Lauderdale/Miami street team. We ask that you be located in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area and be at least 18 years of age. If you are interested in being a part of Major League Wrestling and getting involved in the wrestling business, then this is your once in a million life time shot at doing such. To sign up, visit: http://www.mlw.com/view/v.php?p77.
MLW newcomer Rich Criado is preparing for his MLW debut. A date has yet to be determined, however I suspect he'll have a major impact in the junior heavyweight division once he arrives given his background as a 26 year old veteran who has seen action as far as Puerto Rico
People continue to write in about how much they enjoyed the classic six man tag match from two weeks ago. The match featuring some of MLW's top high flyers from all around personifies what MLW is all about - hybrid wrestling: the best of the best pulling out all the stops and being competent in all styles in order to out wrestle and out fight their adversaries in high impact encounters.
PJ Friedman's will be out for a while with orbital, severe shoulder, and knee injuries. After years of shoot fighting, wrestling, etc. you can expect quite a toll on his body. I can tell you though, I spoke to PJ last week and you have not heard the last of him as you will soon see a new, improved, and 100% healthy PJ Friedman. Look out Horsemen as this fear factor will be back!
A member of MLW's office will soon be returning to martial arts for a tournament this summer when MLW's very own Court Bauer dawns the gi for the very first time in three years. The addition of judo and/or martial arts entering MLW's hybrid arena as a new style of competition in the squared ring will surely mean more meaning overall to the MLW product. It certainly offers more credibility and prestige to the wrestling business as well.
MLW is proud to announce that the home video release of MLW King of Kings is still one of the top best sellers, constantly ranked in the top 5 bestsellers for Highspots.com. To order King of Kings on either DVD or VHS, visit: http://www.highspots.com/affiliatewiz/affiliatewiz.asp?BannerID=23&AffiliateID=66&Task=Click&ItemID=7033.
Lastly, I want to wish you a happy Memorial Day weekend! Until next week when I’ll discuss the barbed wire match forthcoming in MLW – That’s all from Backstage!
Have a great week, Andy Vineberg andy.vineberg@mlw.com
