  • Thanks to Daniel Edler for sending in the following AJ Styles interview recap:

    Show: The Interactive Interview (theinteractiveinterview.com)
    Guest: AJ Styles
    Date: March 26th 2003
Your Hosts: Daniel Edler & James Walsh

  • AJ Styles is one of TNA’s MVP’s. One of the biggest stars to come from little known to major superstar in NWA-TNA, AJ speaks out on many issues such as his turning down a move to WWE, and the Vince Russo Style of Booking. Also on the show, our debut ‘after show wrap up’, where Dan and James run down the interview, have a debate (one every show), and generally chat for about 10 minutes. Very, very, strange, stuff.

  • AJ Styles

  • When he was little he went to high school with two big guys, became friends and trained with them. Rick Michaels helped train him, and the two big guys quit the training – AJ didn’t!

  • NWA Wildside’s developmental deal with WCW was the reason that he got hired by WCW. He had a dark match against Air Paris, and both guys were signed.

  • AJ can’t remember the last time he wrestled for WCW!

  • The only contact WWE had with him originally after the closure of WCW, was them telling him he’s not being signed! They later offered him a $500/week contract, which meant him moving to Cincinnati. Styles says it wasn’t feasible for just $500 a week, and that’s the reason, not because he’s “big bad AJ Styles”.

  • WWE haven’t come knocking recently, and for him to join them would have to be a “big pay day”.

  • He feels TNA are above “showing boobs and that” (in reference to the Lollipop incident). The company should be about showcasing the talent, not showcasing a women’s breasts.

  • His first match against Jerry Lynn was for the WWA Cruiserweight title, and he kicked him in the mouth with a very stiff shot. WWA left Styles feeling “low-balled” by WWA, but he had fun in Australia. He hopes to work with them in the future.

  • A fan wanted to fly Jerry and AJ over and have them two just wrestle in Australia, but it fell through.

  • Styles then goes on a rant about his passion for the X-Division, and how Siaki wasn’t a very good X-Champ. “Was he extreme? Mmm… not really. Is Sonny Siaki a great wrestler? Yes, but he’s a heavyweight”.

  • Gimmick matches aren’t high on his favourites list. He feels he can wrestle a good match without a gimmick. People think he likes wrestling ladder matches – but he doesn’t!

  • When talking about Ring of Honor, he feels when you wrestle for them you just wrestle. When you’re on TNA, you become an entertainer.

  • Styles then tells a VERY funny story about himself, an African wrestler and a referee. The African wrestler and he share an in-ring spat, where it escalated to baseball bats and chairs. The whole time, it was one huge rib on the referee, who bought it completely!

  • After the Lollipop topless on TNA incident, AJ said to the Christian Wrestling Federation that he wrestles for, don’t list me as an NWATNA talent, because if they want to pull this stuff, he doesn’t want people knowing he’s associated with them. He feels that if people want to see half naked women on wrestling, they should tune in to WWE.

  • While he admits he goofs off way too much, Styles has a good relationship with Jesus Christ and follows religion.

  • AJ felt that he told a ‘really good story’ during his match with Jeff Jarrett on TNA in the past month. He feels that Jarrett is a top-notch performer, because he will wrestle his opponent’s style of match.

  • Surprisingly, his major goal in the future is to appear on a wrestling video game!

  • In the future, AJ feels that the business will follow to more of a Ring of Honor style, pure wrestling.

  • We then play word association with names such as Air Paris (which he gets very stuck for words for), Desire, Trinity, Vince Russo and many others.

  • The final note is that he thanks the fans and truly appreciates their support.
