I Know What You Did Last Monday- The ULTIMATE Year End Awards
Submitted by Brendan Campbell on Tuesday, December 24, 2002 at 2:30 PM EST
Hello and welcome to I Know What You Did Last Monday, brought to you on this wonderful Christmas Eve.
Now before I get into the ULTIMATE awards choices (What makes them ultimate? Well technically not much, but there are a lot of great categories to choose from so enjoy!) I’ve got a couple of other things to talk about. How about things in general first. I did FINALLY get to the theater on Tuesday last week and I saw "Die Another Day" which was a very cool movie. While Bond is always predictable, this one had a way to keep you watching without even thinking about how you know he’ll come out on top or whatnot. That’s good writing!
Also, this past Thursday I gave new meaning to Christmas break for myself…I was at work and I missed a stair on my way down and I landed hard on my right ankle sideways. It swelled up and low and behold it was broken. So here I am, casted up with a broken ankle over the Christmas break with a broken ankle…oh the irony is painful, though the injury was more so.
Either way, let’s get into a bit of wrestling talk and then onto the awards!!
The wrong people are being protected
I’ve come to the conclusion that the WWE is protecting the wrong people. For this I will use Matt Hardy as an example. You see, when you have something hot you want to protect him or her! You want to make it so that the crowd continues to cheer or boo them, you don’t want to go and blow that.
Right now Matt Hardy is one of the few shining young stars that are actually BREAKING THROUGH with their gimmicks, and what’s happening? The WWE is burying it. Why? I’m not sure! It’s one of my favourite gimmicks around, and Matt quickly became one of my top wrestlers.
Though since he gets this heat that continues to rise the WWE continues to bury Matt. He had a feud with Rikishi and LOST cleanly to him before Big Show arrived and destroyed Rikishi…what sense did that make?!?!? Couldn’t Matt have WON the match, then left, and as Rikishi was getting up he turned and WHAM choke slam to add injury to insult? No, Rikishi had to WIN and continue to be around even though he has no power. Not physically, but he’s going nowhere. He will NEVER main event now, and he will NEVER leave the mid-card…so why keep pushing him?
Move on. Matt Hardy fights Undertaker, and beats him two times! That was great and THAT should have kept going! Not Matt beating Undertaker, but Matt using that tactic. I’ll get back to that but we have to look at Vince’s AMAZING choice to put A-Train before Matt Hardy to feud with Edge so that Albert could be a big guy to feud with Taker upon his return. Well first off, Albert VS Taker…as IF that would sell a PPV. I would skip it if it were on Heat!
So not only did we miss out on an awesome feud that could have gone long term for Matt and Edge, but we missed out on a Mysterio/Matt feud as well. Both feuds would have helped propel Matt up higher, and given him and his opponents more credibility, but nope, we sat through Edge carrying Albert 2 times before beating him fairly to end the torture.
What happened that same night? Matt Hardy took on Brock Lesnar! What should have happened and what did happen were two different things. Brock is INCREDIBLY over with the fans. That’s great! Though think about it…if he loses, will fans boo him? No. Will he lose credibility? No. I mean HELL he’s already lost to Show! You’ve blown that whole thing for him already.
What SHOULD have happened here was help Matt out. It was great that he didn’t wrestle Brock and got Moore to do it instead. That was classic Mattitude. So what happens instead of having another match at the next show? Matt is just DESTROYED after the match! WHY!?!?
Show or Angle should have come down and taken out Lesnar, and Matt got the quick pin! IMAGINE the heat he would have for that! The bragging rights of "I beat Taker AND Brock" and so forth! It would have been HUGE and Brock wouldn’t have lose ANY credibility with the fans…that’s what I just don’t get.
Brock was being protected when he didn’t need it! Yet the future young stars (Brock is there too, but his main event time has come early) are being left out to dry and being embarrassed night in and night out because Vince thinks they have a lot of time. Well if you continually embarrass them then NO, they don’t have a lot of time.
Brock comes in and loses EVERY match for months and months, then just goes on this spree. Will he have the same credibility? No! Because who cares about this guy who sucked but is now good. You have to balance things out, and right now in the case of Matt Hardy and a few others, it’s just not the case.
Hardy and co. should be the ones protected for the future, as the higher ups have nothing to worry about because they’re already incredibly over with the fans and a loss will only bring heat or cheers to those who beat them. It’s fine to protect your prospects, but just make sure the prospects you spend all your time worrying about protecting are the ones who need it in the first place.
