Out of the Ashes - Are you Tough Enough?

    Out of the Ashes

Hello, all, and welcome back to Out of the Ashes. I am Blazing Phoenix, and this is my column.

I took and unexpected week off last week, and I apologize. I just had too much work to get done, and this was the first thing on the list that had to go. But now I’m back, and better than ever. Well, that’s up to you to decide.

Not much feedback after my last edition about that college course on pro wrestling. Someone sent me another article on it, and I had a couple email conversations about it with some people. But other than that, very boring.

I didn’t really know what to talk about this week. I didn’t see Survivor Series, so I have no way of really reviewing it, although I could conceivably give thoughts on the results.

But then, the miracle of living a boring college life helped me out. Friday night, I was at my friends’ suite, and we started watching the Tough Enough 3 marathon. And we got into a discussion about who was good. Eureka. My topic.

Fanning the Flames - Who’s gonna win Tough Enough 3?

I’m gonna talk about everybody, even those who have already left. I just want to give my thoughts on everybody.

Jill - Arguably, this was the best girl they had out of the pack. She had the look, she seemed pretty tough and athletic, and she seemed to be doing pretty well in the final auditions. I don’t know what really made her want to leave, but it’s very unfortunate that she did.

Lisa - This is the girl that supposedly lost it, mentally, and climbed up on the roof of the house. We didn’t really get shown enough of her for me to make a really good evaluation. She seemed ok, nothing special, and then she just started breaking down. That’s about all I can say.

Chad - I think my friend said it best. He looked like the son of Bull from Nightcourt. Chad was big, and decent in the ring, but he definitely lacked the look of a pro wrestler. To put it bluntly, he looked goofy. He looked kind of klutzy and out of place in there. I don’t necessarily agree with him being cut for “personality”, because I don’t know him personally, but I don’t think he really deserved to be there.

Nick - Nick had the look. But as one of my female friends pointed out, he also had a lisp, and it pissed her off. What pissed me off was the fact that he kept bitching and moaning about things. He was pretty much the spoiled rich boy. I mean, Scott tore a ligament, and he’s still going. Nick only had some tendinitis, MAYBE some ligament damage, and he came in all bandaged up. I’m glad DDP came in and talked to them like that. Nick might have been able to help his cause by jumping in the ring, but he didn’t. No big loss, in my opinion.

Rebekah - Rebekah was the second best girl, again in my opinion. She was good sized, had a certain air about her, and looked pretty good in the ring. I still think the reason she had for leaving was bad. I mean, she knew there was troubles before she auditioned, but she still went and did it anyways. I think she took advantage of the situation. There was also all the problems about her religious beliefs. Was she seriously planning on going into the WWE, with their racy content, and call herself a hardcore Christian? I highly doubt it.

Scott - Like everybody keeps saying, Scott’s problem isn’t lack of skill. It’s lack of maturity. I do give him credit, though. He’s fighting through an injury, he realized that alcohol was giving him trouble, so he stopped that. But then there’s all the other stuff he does wrong. Like that thing with the girl that he hasn’t seen or talked to in 4 years. That’s just stupid. The things he says, the things he does...they’re gonna be what kills him. At this point, I’m not exactly sure what’s keeping him on the show. It’s either that the trainers see this potential in him, or that they’re keeping him for the comic relief. I’m leaning towards the second one.

Kelly - I’m not sure why they took Kelly to begin with. With her asthma, she shouldn’t have been a viable option. That being said, she’s doing pretty well. She came in dead last at the auditions, but she’s been fighting hard to prove herself, despite her physical problems. But she doesn’t have the look. I don’t think she has the intensity.

Jamie - Well, out of the two remaining girls, she’s got the best chance to win. She’s tough, she’s relatively good in the ring, and she has an ok look. But she’s way too emotional. She gets a huge crush on John for no apparent reason, even knowing that he has a girlfriend. She randomly gets drunk and starts bawling. It’s just no good.

John - This guy is my top choice to win at the moment. He got cut from the final 25 in Tough Enough 2 because they thought he was in it for the fame. In response, he went and started training at a wrestling school, and showed up for Tough Enough 3. That shows a lot of heart and seriousness. He’s got a background in gymnastics, and he repeatedly says that he wants to be a flyer, which is exactly what the WWE could use right now. He’s got a great look, and he is remaining focused on the competition, instead of the surroundings.

Matt - Upon first seeing him, my friends and I all had the same reaction. He looks like a Hardy Boy. I don’t know whether that’ll help him or hurt him in the long run. But it’s a pretty good look, and he looks good in the ring. He also seems fairly focused on the prize. But some people are thinking now that he’s hurt himself by admitting to the tendinitis in his knees. I agree a little bit, but it doesn’t seem to be hurting him at all in the ring. By showing that he’s getting around it very well, he could be ultimately helping himself.

Justin - Good build, seems very serious about it. But I just don’t know. He doesn’t really have the look. He’s pretty good in the ring, but not enough has really been shown about him to make a good case for or against him.

Jonah - He’s hurting himself big time. He’s doing stupid things in and out of the ring, and it’s killing him. He’s got a great look. As Ivory said, “He makes a good impact.” But then he starts thinking about it. And then he’s dead. Then, with all the stuff outside of the ring.... The eating contest, the bets. Especially the bet that he and Eric made with Scott. By trying to get out of that big time, after the trainers explicitly told them about bets, he made a really big mistake.

Eric - The dark horse of the competition. Almost nothing has been shown about him that I can recall. The bet that he and Jonah made with Scott? Most of the stuff was Jonah. Not much gets shown in the ring with him. But he’s got the look, the physique, and probably the skills to take home a contract. Unless he fucks up big time in the next few weeks, he’d be a good bet to win.

So judging from this point in time, I’d have to say that John and Eric are the front runners to win this year. Neither of the remaining girls seem to have what it takes, and Jonah and Scott are shooting themselves in the foot. I’d also put Matt pretty high up in the rankings.

I potentially see the WWE trying to do something with most of the guys in this competition, though. You know that they want to make Jonah into something great. I don’t really blame them, either. If he doesn’t end up winning, I think they may tell him to go to Killer Kowalski’s school, and then sign him to a developmental deal later on. Possibly the same with Justin. Potentially, even Jill and Rebekah. I could see it happening.

    Dousing the Blaze

Well, that’s my two cents on this year’s Tough Enough. We’ll have to wait and see how right I am. I’d say that I made some pretty good picks, though.

Questions, comments, hatred? Direct them my way. Ideas for next time would be nice, too.

So until next time, have a Happy Thanksgiving.
