I Know What You Did Last Thursday- Smackdown! Review & Rating

Hello and welcome to another rendition of “I Know What You Did Last Thursday.” This week I had the pleasure…or displeasure of attending Smackdown! Live! While this was all fun, and being there was great as usual, there are some SERIOUS issues with Smackdown and being there live.

For those of you who have been there, you’ve got to wonder what the WWE is on that night! I mean PPV’s are live! They go go go and have one shot! RAW is live! It’s set to go and they do it fast and quick. Smackdown is taped. We all know this. So you’d think they’d get it all done and mix it up later right? WRONG! They had a little skit on TV, then would take a 10 MINUTE break! Then a match, then a 10 minute break! This went on for every segment and match. It killed the crowd and kinda ruined things. I mean who wants to SIT and wait for things to happen. Meanwhile they show the same commercials in between each break after five minutes of dead time.

This is hard to sit through, and kinda makes it boring. I mean the matches were fun and seeing the guys was awesome, but when you don’t need breaks for a live show, why do you need breaks for a taped show? I mean I understand SOME breaks, but believe me this was insane. Stephanie said she was going to announce whether the cast would come off or not LIVE right? Well after she said that there was a 15 minute break until she finally came to the ring to talk. That’s insane.

Either way, the live aspect was fun. I was right beside the ramp. Will you see me on TV? Or better yet, did you see me on TV? No. I was on the side opposite the one always on TV. But I had a Kurt Angle sign, and a friend brought a marker. So one of my highlights from the night was when Matt was on his way out. I quickly took the blank side of my sign and wrote “Matt Hardy Version 1” on it. After his match when it was on…break…he was leaving with Dawn Marie. I yelled “Hey Matt” and held up the sign. He looked over, went “yeah!” and gave me the hand sign of his. Very cool guy, as a lot just sold their injuries the whole way up…which I can’t blame them!

Anyway, I’m aiming for front row tickets next time they show up in T.O! Basically hitting the scalpers for them, but that’s my new goal! Attainable? I think so…my wallet may disagree though!

    Anyway, onto the show!

    Smackdown Review

The show started hot with Edge and Rey taking on D’Von and Ron Simmons. Okay, well Edge and Rey were cool…but how they’d doing anything with D’Von and Ron after this is beyond me. The match was pretty good! Solid action all around with Edge getting the pin. Then of course the great run in from Eddie/Chavo totally beating Edge and Rey down. This only added to the tournament as it shows all the people who want it that bad! ALREADY more credibility then the RAW tag titles and they aren’t even around yet.

Next for some reason the WWE decided they needed to show more reason as to why would should care less about the Cruiserweight title. When the champion can BARELY beat his ‘girlfriend’ then there are some issues with that person holding a title that should be worthwhile! Kidman, Tajiri, Knoble, Shannon Moore, Ray…all these guys who COULD be having hot feuds for the belt aren’t because the WWE won’t let Knoble fight for the belt EVER! Waste of a division that was thought to go somewhere. Tell me this, the big debate is Mysterio and how he should be either heavyweight or cruiserweight.

Is this REALLY something to discuss? Rey is good yeah, but I mean he won’t go anywhere in the heavyweight division. Champ? Hell no. Main event consistently? Nah. And he’s just not suited for it. Benoit/Angle VS Rey. Okay, those worked…they won’t always be fighting. Rey should focus on owning and projecting the Cruiserweight title. Then as time goes bring in NEW cruiserweights to fight him, be threats and whatnot. Forget this ‘push’ that’ll go nowhere just because he gets a pop.

In what was some bad TV all night The Undertaker showed his face for the first time to deny STILL sleeping with the girl who was on the show earlier. He said it was long ago, and it’s over. He’s with his wife now. The audio was bad at the arena so we really couldn’t hear what he said, and I didn’t care enough to pay attention while he was saying it again on TV. So either way, he talked about that whole great feud.

In a GOOD backstage segment, Eddie confronted Chris Benoit…or the other way around. Benoit said nothing, but Eddie could tell in his eyes that he blamed him for what happened last week. Eddie flipped out in an entertaining scene. I believe that this will lead to Angle/Benoit winning the tag titles and feuding with Eddie and Chavo. That would be SMART booking. That would also leave Edge open for a nice feud with Brock!

John Cena VS Billy Kidman was a filler match with a purpose enough to keep these two on TV! Not a bad match, and it gave Cena the shove into heel status. That tends to happen here in Canada. We cheer the heels, and boo the faces. It’s not our fault! We just do. We end up turning people sometimes…maybe that’s why they do turns here to start? I remember in ‘97 at Breakdown the PPV, when Rock fought Mankind and Ken Shamrock in a steel cage for the #1 shot, Rocky was a heel and we cheered him, thus starting to knock him up into face status…ah, Canada…that’s what we’re good for! The US fights wars…we make wrestlers legit faces/heels.

Brock continued his quest to get Takers cast off. Stupid segments I think. Taker’s hand is BROKEN! I mean it’s not like he could do much with it off. Which is obviously the point, but I mean Brock broke it! So I mean…der! Ah, who knows. Just using this as the build up the feud kinda made Brock look worried about Taker. Ah well, at least time off is coming for Taker after…another hint at Edge/Brock!

I wasn’t a fan of the Brock VS Chuck match. Reason being while Brock has crushed guys like Orton, who could have put up a fight, Chuck has a pretty big comeback! I mean Brock had to grab the ropes at one point during the match. While you want to keep Chuck semi respectable, you want to keep Brock more so, especially when he’s heading into the Cell this Sunday night!

Torrie is backstage and then sees who!? A wrestler who barely gets on TV and is now getting a push forward?!?! No, better! Her DAD! Thank God, I was worried after not seeing him the first half of the show that he wasn’t going to get his allotted 20 minutes of air time. Phew, aw and he got her flowers too. What a sweet dad with no other hidden intentions. He should have saved the money and taken acting lessons. Is it just me or does he more or less just nod, or shake his head?

Matt Hardy is just getting higher and higher on my list of favourites! His heel role is AWESOME! Period. I love his entrance. It’s great. Compared to the other new gimmicks of late, this is working amazing for him, and his mic skills are getting better! He deserves this push as everyone and their mother said Jeff was the next Shawn Michaels. Right. Matt’s always had the talent, Jeff just jumped off of tall things and made a fast impact. I loved the ending to this match with Matt shoving Dawn’s face into Rikishi to protect himself, then getting hit later after Torrie tricks him. Great stuff.

Even MORE talk about the cast came up next. They made this sound so incredibly huge. Like Brock can NOT beat Taker if he’s wearing the cast. Why doesn’t Broke just come to the PPV with a cast and say he ‘broke’ his arm during the week off training? Then he’d have a cast too.

Benoit and Angle came face to face before their match later that night. They talked…well, Angle talked about how he didn’t want to lose and take a year off. The whole not needing to train a whole year for the Olympics was great…the teasing continues as to whether he’ll leave or not. Though I’d say he’ll stay as if he DID go, and lost…that really hurts his whole image.

Torrie finds out now that the flowers were REALLY for Dawn Marie…dear God, her dad is a man-whore! She rushes around, then finds his PANTS OFF!! Oh no! She opens the shower and LOOK it’s Dawn Marie naked with Torrie’s dad with his…shirt…on? Okay, you take off your pants and go into the shower with your shirt and glasses on? Am I missing something here? Anyway, Torrie runs off crying and her dad then uses his CLASSIC catchphrase of stepping forward, then shaking his head. Oh, and I SAW THAT LIVE! How many people can brag they saw Torrie’s dad shake his head live? I know…you’re all jealous. But hey, we can’t all be so lucky to see this future star in person. *sigh*

Angle/Benoit VS Eddie/Chavo Guerrero was up next! These guys had a PPV worthy match…or at least a match that could have easily been put on the PPV. Though I believe they’re saving this one. The ending was great! And it solidified Angle and Benoit as a team. Edge and Rey did their run in at the start on BOTH teams thus keeping this division hot. Angle and Benoit won thus setting up Rey/Edge VS Benoit/Angle at the PPV. I see the Wolverine and American hero pulling out the win there. Why else would they have been pushed so hard? Besides, Edge has other things to do and Rey should go beat Knoble and win the title. We’ll see this Sunday. I like how Cole said he’d never looked forward to a PPV match like he is this one…hey Cole, you’re my favourite announcer and all, but come on. It’ll be good, but I doubt it’ll be better then the two consecutive Edge matches you had on two Smackdowns before this tourny started with Edge/Kurt and Edge/Eddie. Though it will rank up there in show stealer territory.

THEN FINALLY to end the controversy, Stephanie came out to tell us all what’s going on with the cast. Steph is hot. I’ve always thought so but the implants are NOT cool. They’re way too big. And her real breasts became saggy because she lost weight? Okay? So either let them be and wear a push up bra, or just firm them up! She like went up 8 sizes! And she says she wants more?!? Sweet crap.

Anyway, onto the IMPORTANT issue at hand. Steph announces after some tension that Taker CAN keep the cast! Yay! Brock then thinks Stephanie is a corpse and does his impression of what Kane likes to do to them according to RAW. Taker would come out and clean house. He beat down Paul and continuously knocked Brock out…I guess that means Brock wins this Sunday because he looks weak now? Ah well, does anyone REALLY care? We’re all just tuning in to see if Torrie’s dad got lucky with Dawn!

Well, that was the show! It was a lot better on TV. Maybe because the COMMERCIALS were faster then the damn breaks they made us sit through, plus they were a variety instead of just telling us to go buy the Scorpion King with no volume on. Well, the PPV is this Sunday. Hopefully I’ll get a column up that night if I get to watch it! Either way, as far as this show goes…

    **.5/****

Hopefully a lot of feuds heat up at the PPV, and some *cough*Brock/Taker*cough* come to a total end. Bring on Edge and Brock! And I’m just eager to see if Torrie’s dad gets more air time on the PPV then Lance Storm…oh, I bet it’ll be a close call!
