Airdate - June 26 on PPV

I just got back from the NWA-TNA pay-per-view in Huntsville. Most of the crowd started to leave following the conclusion of the live broadcast. Apparently, the NWA hadn't made the fact that there would be two shows recorded very clear to the live audience. They practically began begging the crowd to stay, and they wouldn't start shooting until the side of the arena being broadcast on television had filled back up. I'm assuming that the matches were all filmed in reverse order to ensure a hot crowd for the main event, but I'm not 100% certain. I believe there was a dark match with Apollo before the taping began, but I can't be certain.

Joel Gertner comes to the ring and introduces the team of Lenny and Bruce (Get it?), the Rainbow Express. He blatantly admits that Lenny and Bruce are gay, and tells the crowd he is very straight. He claims the reason he is associated with Lenny and Bruce is because he enjoys surrounding himself with winners. The Dupps were introduced as their opponents, but their music played and they never showed. Maybe this will be explained on television. Instead, another team, dressed in street clothes, made their way to the ring for an impromptu match-up.

Match 1: Lenny and Bruce v.s. James Storm and Chris Harris: Fairly quick match, Harris and Storm pulled off the surprise win.

Match 2: Jeff Jarrett v.s. Scott Hall (accompanied by Jackie Fargo and Toby Keith): Lots of interaction between Jarrett and Fargo/Keith. K-Krush runs in and keeps Hall from hitting the Razor's Edge. The referee is distracted while Krush and Grandmaster Sex-ay go at it on the outside. Toby Keith gets in the ring and assists Hall in driving Jarrett's face into the mat with a modified version of The Stroke. Hall pulls off the win.

Match 3: K-Krush v.s. Brian Christopher: Decent match, Krush is way over as a heel. Apart from Malice, he appears to be the person the NWA is pushing as a top heel. Malice, Jarrett, and Krush were all fairly over with the live crowd tonight. Krush worked the crowd really well, but thanks to the interference of Sterling Marlin, Krush fell victim to Sex-ay's top rope leg drop for the 1, 2, 3.

The Lingerie battle royal was next. I'd like to add that all three of the NWA-TNA girls dancing in the cages at ringside were 100X more attractive than any of the women in the ring. Daphne, now known as Shannon, I believe, was pretty dominate throughout. After a moderately unattractive blonde girl won the match a scorned Francine returned to the ring and stripped the battle royal winner.

Next, Ricky Steamboat interviewed Ken Shamrock in the ring. Shamrock basically said he respected the title, but based upon his mic work the fans couldn't really decide whether to cheer or boo him. James Vandenburg, aka the Sinister Minister, appeared at the top of the stage. He basically declared himself a Satanist, and claimed he had minions out to destroy Shamrock. One of his minions, Slash, appeared at the top of the stage beside the Minister. Shamrock laughed him off. Meanwhile, Malice managed to sneak in from behind, and he nailed Shamrock with his chokeslam. It was announced that Shamrock will defend his title against Malice at the next taping in Nashville at the Municipal Auditorium on July 3.

Match 4: X-Title Double Elimination Match: AJ Styles v.s. Low-ki v.s. Jerry Lynn v.s. Psicosis: This match was pretty fast-paced. Once Jerry Lynn entered the match he dominated. Psicosis was the first to be eliminated. I believe he fell prey to the cradle piledriver and AJ Styles's finisher. Next out was Low-ki, although he seemed to be pretty over with the Huntsville crowd after nailing a few high spots. Finally, down one fall already, it came down to AJ Styles and Jerry Lynn. The entire match was basically a spot-fest. Some of it was sloppy. After about fifteen minutes Lynn lost a fall to Styles's finisher. Now that they were even they exchanged near falls for a good ten minutes or so before AJ Styles hit a twisting senton leg-drop (you'd have to see it.....not unlike the Yang-time) for the pin and the win. Ricky Steamboat refereed the match.

NOTES: The crowd had all but disappeared by the time the X-Title match rolled around. Taping two shows was probably not such a good idea. Most of the names were only used briefly in the battle royal. Apollo looks to be one of the NWA's top stars, as does Malice. All in all, it was a decent show. It didn't even compare to a WWE event, but a friend of mine commented on how similar the show was to some of the latter Nitro broadcasts. The entire show had a very "old school" feel to it, and I think the Huntsville crowd was into it for the most part. The arena was nearly full for the first taping, but had cleared out to less than a 1000 people by the time the last match took place.
