Raw Report - Live from the St Louis Savvis Center- 04-22-02 By Steven "Rommel" Schaeffer
Segment #1 We start things off with stills of Hogan's victory last night on Backlash with commentary by JR and the Lawler. Hulkamania lives, and so we go to the Union Underground intro.
Match #1 Brock Lesnar w/Paul Heyman vs. Matt Hardy Analysis: Brock Lesnar's music hit and out walked the monster and his manager. Replays of Brock TWO'ing Matt on the stage to take him off the Backlash card was shown. Got to love this logic, his was so hurt as to miss a PPV but is healed the next day. The Hardy's music hits. This is exactly as you would expect. Matt taped up his ribs to "Sell" his injuries. This may have been the exact same match as Brock vs. Jeff from last night come to think of it, as it played out the same way. Finish: After the 360 powerbomb the referee called the bell, blissfully ending Matt's beating.
Ric Flair is seen greeting the roadies, who refuse to shake his hand. Flair seems mildly upset, claiming not to have seen Austin's foot on the ropes. Behind him is the Undertaker, who thanks Ric. He tells him that he did the right thing. Flair said he did not help him on purpose. Taker says that he owes him one and is going to thank the public personally.
Segment #2 We come back to The Undertaker's entrance. Standing in the ring the Undertaker, as the number one contender, compliments Ric Flair for a job well done. Undertaker talks about how Flair called things right down the middle and counted one, two and three. Undertaker claims he would have beaten Austin no matter what, which prompts a Austin chant. Undertaker talks about going to Judgement Day to fight the immortal Hulk Hogan. For the love of God that's a bad match. Taker puts over Hogan's come back, and tells him that he is welcome for the solid. At Judgement Day, Undertaker says that he will be Judge, Jury and Executioner. Cut to the Game walking through the back, as Taker begins to panic. "He can't be here! Only the Champ can be on both shows" Oh, but he is here, music and all. HHH comes out and immediately takes Taker down. Triple H eventually throws the big man out and eventually the two spill over the announce table. Hunter begins to beat Undertaker with the monitor, angry Bret Hart style. The referees finally come as Triple H is beating Taker. They separate them but after a shot by a bloody Undertaker Hunter breaks free and proceeds to beat him to the lower part of the stage area. The crowd is eating it up. I guess this is what was promised to Hunter for jobbing last night. To the back they go, where we see Undertaker selling for the first time since ever! Taker is on the floor begging! And out comes the sledgehammer. To the Taker's gut, and finally security grabs the Game before he kills Taker. The police come, and Hunter finally surrenders. Even handcuffed he gets off a good kick. Wow that segment ruled. That's how you tell stories, not with large trucks and ambulances!
Segment #3 We come back with JR and Lawler, who are trying to put their announcing area back together. A replay of the previous assault is shown. Afterwards, we see the cops taking the Game away in a squad car. That means he'll be back later. Hyper for Scorpion King's record shows. An "At The Movies" Segment with Booker T and Goldust is shown. They are apparently movie reviewers, and play decently off one another. Booker T liked the film, though he claimed that The Rock is not as good as Booker T! So they show a scene of the film with Booker T dubbed in badly. This was very funny in that "I don't believe they actually did that" sort of way. Goldust said the film lacked one thing… Goldust. And so Goldust gets dubbed in, which is not funny at all. Booker T says that if Goldust were in the film they would have called it the Scorpion Queen. Later tonight, Goldust/Booker T take on Spike/Bubba! Regal is shown backstage near the coffee, and Flair approaches. Regal compliments his counting three while Stone Cold's foot was on the ropes.
Segment #4 We come back to the new Intercontinental Champion joining JR and the King.
Match #2 Mr. Perfect vs. Rob Van Dam Analysis: Mr. Perfect music hits, so he comes out to no reaction. It was quite the contrast to RVD's entrance, which now has pyro and crowd support. These two had a decent match, doing a lot with the time they had. Finish: RVD won the match with the 5* frog splash. Following the victory Eddy attacked RVD but the champ missed his own frog splash and ends up kicked out of the ring.
WWF flashback moment of Hogan stealing the Iron Shriek's Championship. Interim Champion!
Segment #5 The slam of the week or shot of the night of I like to eat potatoes flashback or whatever is Molly delivering the excuse for Trish's defeat last night.
Match #3Trish Stratus/Jacky vs. Molly/Jazz © Analysis:Trish is on the cover of Oxygen this month. She could be completely nude making love to a goat and I wouldn't buy Oxygen. This match was fast-paced with decent work. When Trish was in there it was actually pretty good. Finish: A belt shot to the back of the head of Jacky by Jazz was all Molly needed to pin Jacky. Following the pin Trish managed to fend off the heels.
Flair is shown in his office complaining the lack of respect he is receiving to Arn Anderson. AA says that he believes him, but there are some that do not believe that he didn't see Austin's foot so he needs to go out there and clear the air. Flair agrees that is a good idea. By the way, the foot on/under the rope finish was used to continue after the Flair vs. Steamboat 2/3 falls match from Clash of Champions VI. That, by the way, was the greatest match ever preformed in this writer's opinion. If you disagree, you suck.
Segment #6 Another WWF Flashback is shown, this time from Hogan defeating the Macho King at Wrestlemania V with voice over by Gorilla Monsoon. Afterward Flair's music hits to bring out the Nature Boy. He comes out to an odd ovation. Very little noise, as the crowd stands to watch him almost in awe while giving the sign of the 4 Horsemen. When the Theme of 2001 ends they Woo like crazy. Flair says he came out to set the record straight. He claims that he screwed up. He talks about the NOW distracting him, by you know standing there and not doing anything. Ric Flair guesses the Rattlesnake will be hot with him. Flair asks for the footage of the finish from last night. Flair admits that it looks like he saw Austin's foot on the ropes, so they show another angle where it shows that he could not see what was happening. Flair apologizes to Stone Cold, which brings him out. Here comes the 'What?' Flair has his head down. Through all the what chants I made out that Austin is very angry. Flair finally gets mad when Austin mentions all his Championships, which he numbers at sixteen. Flair says he is not Vince McMahon. Austin wishes he were dealing with Vince McMahon, who at least will look him in the eye and tell him that he is going to screw him. Austin has his own footage for Flair, which he does not show. Ric promises to make things right, by making sure the nWo never screws with Austin again. So it's Austin and Bradshaw vs. The nWo for tonight! Okay, umm… thanks Flair.
Segment #7 JR thanks everyone for watching the webcast of Backlash. By the way, did anyone order that? How did it go?
Match #4Bubba © /Spike © vs. Goldust/Booker T Analysis:The reconciliation of Spike and Bubba was shown. A completely entertaining match up, despite Dustin's eighties offense. At the end Spike pushed Bubba and told him to get the tables, much to the delight of the crowd. Finish: The deay was enough for the heels to regroup, so Booker hit the axe kick for the three count.
Match #5Steven Richards vs. Bubba © for the WWF Hardcore Championship Analysis:I am not entirely sure if this counts as a match but what the hell? Following the previous match Steven attacked with his cool pants. He managed to look impressive for thirty seconds of offense. Finish: As one should expect, Steven was only there to take the powerbomb through the table. You don't need to pin anyone if you're the Hardcore Champion!
WWF flashback of Hogan defeating Sgt. Slaughter at Wrestlemania VII for his third title run is shown.
Segment #8 Earlier today Tommy Dreamer met Shawn Stasiak, who rabbles on in his own awful way. Regal walked up and showed him was a real character was like. Stasiak offered William a chance to explore Planet Stasiak. I hope Regal stiffs his ass.
Match #6William Regal vs. Shawn Stasiak Analysis:They actually announced that Stasiak hails from planet Stasiak. Well, it is better then the other side of darkness. He rushes the ring to eat brass knuckles. Finish:A three count is all she wrote following the power of the punch. The ref saw it, but he like I enjoyed it.
Flair and company are shown rushing to the site of Bradshaw, who is lying unconscious. Flair say's that he knows who did it.
Segment #9 The nWo is shown reading themselves for Austin, and Flair enters. He informs them of Bradshaw's condition, and they show little surprised. He leaves, and the toilet flushes off screen. Nash comes out, but Flair storms in to threaten him that if he does not leave immediately he's gone 4 life. Already he has a new tag partner for Austin, The Big Show.
Another WWF Flashback of Hogan defeating the Undertaker to begin his fourth WWF Championship run. God that was an awful match and it was eleven years ago! Please do not make me watch it again.
Segment #10 Another WWF Flashback is shown, this one is of Hulk Hogan winning his fifth Championship from Yokozuna at Wrestlemania IX. Guys, you should probably cover up that show from having happened.
The Real American comes down to Voodoo Child and a very nice reaction. I give it three months, maximum. That's less then the six months I originally believed he could last, but then I believed they should not let him win his first title match. The crowd cheers some more, and Hogan says that it is still running wild. Hogan says Triple H deserves a rematch, because maybe the Undertaker is to blame for his title win. He talks about his first title win, eighteen years ago. It scares me that many of the people reading this are not eighteen years old. Of course he goes on that is the WWF (Yes, he says WWF not the Undisputed) Champion. Oh God, he just intimated that he could leave tomorrow. Don't do it you Orange Goblin, don't 'Shawn Michael's the belt damnit! Hogan thanks his Hulkamaniacs for helping him get where he is today. He believes in the power of the Hulkamaniacs, and the Undertaker had better believe in it too! Because "What'cha gonna do?" He poses and plays to the crowd.
Segment #11 We come back with the Main Event.
Match #7 Austin/The Big Show vs. nWo Analysis: I love the nWo entrance. I love the philosophy behind the nWo story line. God do I hate the guys in the nWo. A good match, with Austin getting a good but not great out of Scott Hall and X-PAC not needing help on the work side of things. Amazingly enough Stone Cold played the face in peril in this bout, though it is hard to imagine the Big Show being able to fill that role so I suppose it makes sense. Oh will you look at that. Finish: When Austin finally managed to tag in the Big Show he turned on Austin and gave him the Chokeslam. The porn music played and we go dark. I bet the post show report Hunter makes the save.
