Hustle Is Posting Right Now - Looking At The 2013 PWI 500
By Hustle
Aug 23, 2013 - 1:48:45 PM

You rock, Maricel.

"On my list of the best things in life.."

Another year means another issue of the PWI 500, where Pro Wrestling Illustrated ranks the top 500 pro wrestlers on the planet. I did a column like this for last year's issue, so I figured I might as well keep it going and do one for this year, as well. It always generates discussion, and a lot of that discussion turns into full-fledged arguments, so it's always fun to get the ball rolling.

Before I even get on with things, let's look at PWI's criteria for ranking people where they did..

"Our staff compiled this list using criteria that included win-loss record, championships won, quality of competition, major feuds, prominence within their individual promotion(s), and overall wrestling ability."

The grading period is as follows..

"June 1st, 2012 to May 31st, 2013"

That is especially important when you start looking at the rankings, and where certain people are. Some people view a year in wrestling as January 1st to December 31st. Others view a year as the day after WrestleMania until the next year's WrestleMania. When you're going from June 1st until May 31st, that changes things a lot, as you'll soon see, especially since the last three months of wrestling don't count whatsoever when it comes to this list. Those three months will count towards next year's PWI 500, though.

Before any breakdowns are made, let's take a look at the 2013 PWI 500, including where they were ranked in last year's issue. There are a couple errors, as is the case every year with the PWI 500, because the PWI Editors are apparently children. Or monkeys. Perhaps monkey children. I'm sure I'll have made an error or two, now that I've said that, ruining my point. There are two men listed at #34, and also two men listed at #131, while there isn't anyone listed at #134 or #311.

Of course, there are two big issues that immediately jump out at people when they see the rankings, and I want to address them here, right off the bat.

1. First of all.. yes, John Cena is in the top spot, and yes, John Cena deserves to be there. Again, you have to focus on the criteria and the grading period here. Let's take a look at some of Cena's accomplishments during the grading period..

- Main evented No Way Out, and defeated Big Show in a Steel Cage Match
- Main evented Money In The Bank, and won the WWE Title Money In The Bank briefcase
- Competed for the WWE Title at SummerSlam
- Main evented Night Of Champions, competing for the WWE Title, and had a draw with CM Punk
- Main evented Survivor Series, competing for the WWE Title
- Main evented TLC
- Won the Royal Rumble
- Main evented WrestleMania, and won the WWE Title, defeating The Rock
- Defended the WWE Title at Extreme Rules, having a draw with Ryback in a Last Man Standing Match
- Defeated CM Punk in a Match Of The Year candidate on Raw on February 25th
- Had a 35-7-4 record on television and pay-per-view in non-Battle Royal matches

I get that CM Punk held the WWE Title for a large portion of the grading period, but that's where the "prominence within their individual promotion(s)" part of the criteria comes into play. As has been discussed to no end by the IWC, John Cena was featured in "bigger" feuds than Punk, even though Punk had the WWE Title. Cena, more often than not, main evented television and pay-per-view, even though Punk had the WWE Title. In the same time frame, Punk's win/loss record was 21-16-2, including a 2-3-1 record against Cena.

Win/loss record? Advantage Cena.
Championships won? In the technical sense, advantage Cena, but I'll count Punk coming into the period with the WWE Title, so call it even.
Quality of competition? For the most part, they faced the same people, but I'll give the edge to Punk here for two matches VS The Rock and one VS The Undertaker.
Major feuds? Advantage Cena, which is what kept him in the main event spot. It's not like he was main eventing against people like Yoshi Tatsu or anything.
Prominence within their individual promotion(s)? Advantage Cena.
Overall wrestling ability? Alright, so that's certainly an advantage for Punk.

Three nods to Cena, two nods to Punk, and a draw. A very slim margin of victory for Cena, and it shows in the 1-2 rankings. Look, I wouldn't have complained one bit if Punk was given the top spot here, but when you look at everything from the perspective of PWI and their criteria, it just makes sense for Cena to get the #1 spot, no matter what internet fans have to say about him.

2. Daniel Bryan is the best wrestler in the world, but he can't even crack the top ten in the PWI 500?!? What is this sorcery?!?

Not only do I think Bryan does not belong in the top ten, but I think there's a possibility that he's ranked too high. For the millionth time, look at things using PWI's criteria and grading period. Don't view this with your own biased opinions. Bryan suffered some bad luck when it comes to the grading period. He was feuding with CM Punk for the WWE Title in 2012, but most of that feud took place before the grading period began. He had one title shot at the very beginning, but he lost that. Then, for most of the year, Bryan was participating in the tag team division. When did Bryan really break away from the tag division? Late-May, right as the grading period was coming to an end. He spent way too much of the grading period teaming with Kane and facing the likes of the Prime Time Players, 3MB, Rhodes Scholars, and Primo & Epico in short, less-than-five minute television matches. You just aren't getting the right amount of prominence with that type of working schedule. You just aren't.

Fret not, Daniel Bry-fans. He's off to a fantastic start with this grading period, and has a very good chance at being #1 in the 2014 PWI 500. He's been pushed as a singles star, moving his way up the card. He defeated John Cena cleanly to win the WWE Title at the company's second-biggest pay-per-view of the year, and required a screwjob from the referee to drop the title. He's in the middle of a storyline that many people see as keeping him in the spotlight for the next several months, especially with Cena on the shelf with an injury, and could possibly end with him getting a "WrestleMania Moment", either by winning the WWE Title back or by beating Triple H (those are the two most popular predictions I'm seeing on the internet, as of now). If all that goes down, I don't think anyone else stands a chance, and we will be talking about Bryan in the top spot of next year's rankings.

If we're going to look at names I think are ranked too high and too low, I'd make a quick list that would read as follows..

Too High
- Kevin Steen
- Ryback
- Chris Jericho
- Hernandez
- R-Truth
- Rey Mysterio
- Just about every WWE name outside of those in the top dozen or so, and The Shield

Too Low
- All three members of The Shield
- Johnny Gargano

Just like last year, I tried to have both lists relatively even. Just like last year, things just didn't work out the way I wanted them to. I really don't understand how a lot of these WWE names got ranked so high, outside of "they're WWE names, and people will know who they are". Chris Jericho at #25? He was 2-9-1 to start the grading period before leaving to do his outside ventures, then went 10-11-1 to close out the grading period once he returned. A 12-20-2 record, almost exclusively in the midcard, with no titles won (only one title match competed in, period)? If he was anyone other than Chris Jericho, or if he was in TNA with those exact same stats, we'd be looking at ranking him at the bottom part of the first 100, if not even lower.

Ryback spent the first third of the grading period competing in his jobber squashes. He was still having those matches where he would face off against two "local talents" and squash them in a minute. From there, he was elevated up the card, where he would.. go winless in every pay-per-view match he had. I have absolutely no idea how that landed Ryback in the #13 spot this year. Weak quality of competition for most of the grading period (outside of the second half's pay-per-view matches), not a lot being brought to the table with overall wrestling ability, no real prominence (even as he was getting over, he was no more than fifth or sixth highest on the company's proverbial totem pole).. just.. no.

Meanwhile, The Shield continued to rack up the victories. Dean Ambrose was on the losing end of three matches, two of which were by disqualification (tapping out against The Undertaker on Smackdown was the only "real" loss he had). Seth Rollins saw more of the same, losing a total of four matches, three of which were by disqualification (losing to Kane at the very end of the grading period). Roman Reigns, on the other hand, saw one loss by disqualification.. and that's it. Admittedly, they didn't show up on the main roster until a little over halfway into the grading period, but as soon as they showed up, they were placed in prominent feuds against the top names in the business, beat them all, and didn't really look back. I think an argument can be made for all three members of the group being ranked in the top 20, to be honest.

What do you think, ReaderLand? Who do you think is ranked too high? Who do you think is ranked too low? If you were deciding, who would your #1 spot be taken by? What would your criteria for the list be, if you dislike what PWI uses? Holla at ya boy and let me know what's on your mind.
