Hustle Is Posting Right Now - Looking At The 2012 PWI 500
By Hustle

"I got a list, here's the order of my list.."

Each and every year, you can count on this time to spark all sorts of discussion and arguments within the IWC. The reason?

The release of the PWI 500, Pro Wrestling Illustrated's annual ranking of their top 500 names in the wrestling business.

This year's list is out, and I'm going to be looking at a few things. First and foremost, before I even post the list, let's look at what PWI lists as their criteria for ranking everyone..

"Our staff compiled this list using criteria that included win-loss record, championships won, quality of competition, major feuds, prominence within their individual promotion(s), and overall wrestling ability."

As you can see, there's some kayfabe thrown into the mix there, which is what always gets people confused, and what starts a lot of the arguments. Next up, the ranking period..

"June 1st, 2011 to May 31st, 2012"

That's something important to remember, as the last three months "don't count" when it comes to this list. That will explain certain people being higher or lower than you might have expected them.

Now, let's get to the list itself, with everyone's rank, as well as their rank from last year..

First things first.. if you're going to argue CM Punk being in the top spot, you're either trolling, hating blindly or you simply haven't been paying any attention. Punk held the top title in wrestling's top promotion for over half of the voting period, and if you look at the top ten, he regularly beat John Cena (#3), Daniel Bryan (#4), Mark Henry (#9) and Alberto Del Rrrrrio (#10). In every piece of criteria listed, Punk would/should be the top guy.

Punk is already making his claim for the top spot next year, as well. June 1st is the beginning of the voting period, and Punk will be the WWE Champion until at least September 16th, which would mean the first quarter of the grading year will see Punk with the title. For those wondering, there have only been three men to ever get back-to-back #1 rankings in the PWI 500.. Bret Hart (1993 & 1994), "Stone Cold" Steve Austin (1998 & 1999) and John Cena (2006 & 2007). Triple H also has two #1 rankings (2000 & 2009), but not back-to-back, so if Punk can get the top spot in 2013, that puts him in some very elite company.

The biggest gripe that I've seen from people since the list was released is that Austin Aries didn't have a higher ranking. While #13 isn't anything to be ashamed of, people still feel he should be in the top ten, but a lot of those people are forgetting about the grading year. Aries didn't win the TNA World Title until July 8th, a full month too late. While Aries did hold the TNA X-Division Title for the final eight-and-a-half months of the period, a large portion of that time was spent while the X-Division was very weak, and Aries was beating the same one or two people on what seemed to be a weekly basis. With Bobby Roode being the TNA World Champion for the last seven months of the period, on his way to the longest reign since the inception of the title, it makes sense to have him ranked higher. While some can argue that he should still be lower than #2, I have no problem with him being ranked in that spot.

John Cena has been away from the WWE Title for so long now that people almost forget that he even held titles during the grading period. Cena came into the period as the WWE Champion, dropped it a month-and-a-half later, won it back (technically, since Punk was "stripped" of the title after Money In The Bank) a week later, dropped it three weeks later, won it back five weeks later, and then dropped it two weeks later. Quite the up-and-down roller coaster ride there, but if you count the reign he had when the period began, that's still three WWE Title reigns. The length of the reigns were poor, but again, when you're the top champion in the world's top promotion, that goes a long way. What really helps to boost Cena this year is the "major feuds" and "prominence within individual promotion" parts of the criteria. What was the biggest feud of 2011, heading into 2012? It was easily John Cena VS The Rock, and even though he lost to The Rock at WrestleMania 28, he was still involved in the year's top feud, and remained very prominent, even main eventing all of WWE's shows ahead of the WWE Champion. Cena's victory over Brock Lesnar also went a long way for him. Lesnar's return to wrestling was one of the biggest in recent memory, and Cena beat him. That's why, all bias aside, I'm perfectly fine with Cena's #3 ranking here.

If you're looking at Daniel Bryan, you have another up-and-down roller coaster. A month before the period, Bryan changed brands in the supplemental version of the WWE Draft. He didn't look like he was going to be doing much of anything, but then he won the World Title Money In The Bank a month-and-a-half after the period began. Big things, right? He was still being booked to look less than credible, leading almost everyone to assume he would be the first Money In The Bank winner to cash in and lose. Of course, he didn't lose, and he actually had quite the respectable World Title reign, lasting three-and-a-half months before the infamous 18-second loss to Sheamus at WrestleMania. He started building on the success of the "Yes" chants after Mania, but he never quite had the same level of success. Being involved in the main event scene, either as a champion or a challenger, for a large portion of the period really boosts his ranking here, though. As much as I love the guy's work, though, I think he's ranked juuuust a bit too high. I'm not saying I'd drop him down to #452 or anything, but I'd probably have him three or four spots lower than this.

Like Bryan, Sheamus was involved in the WWE Supplemental Draft before the voting period began, but he didn't really have the slow starting period like Bryan did. He won. A lot. He kept on winning. He wasn't getting titles, but he was winning his matches, building up to a Royal Rumble victory and then the aforementioned World Title victory at WrestleMania, where Sheamus held the title for the rest of the period. He didn't rack up the title reigns, but his win/loss record makes up for that. He probably has the best win/loss record of anyone not named CM Punk over the voting period, and when you throw in a Royal Rumble victory and a World Title victory on the biggest stage in wrestling, I think you might actually have someone that is ranked too low. I would have had Sheamus one spot higher, and then, as I mentioned, I would have moved Daniel Bryan down a bit.

Now, let's look at some names I think are ranked too high, and some that I think are ranked too low..

Too High
- Kurt Angle
- Big Show
- Devon
- Mr Anderson
- Sting
- Jack Swagger
- Michael Elgin
- Evan Bourne
- Tensai

Too Low
- Bully Ray
- Brodus Clay
- Sin Cara

I wanted to have an even number of people in each list, but I just couldn't find enough people that I felt were ranked too low. I would switch Devon and Bully Ray, and they would both be fine. Brodus is 29 spots behind Tensai, and while I understand that Tensai had wins against John Cena and CM Punk, he still had a total of five televised wins during the voting period. Brodus having a much longer win streak during the period means that I feel he should be ranked slightly closer to Tensai than 29 spots behind.

I can't get through this column without mentioning Sara Del Rey becoming only the fourth woman in the 22-year history of the PWI 500 to be ranked. She won several matches against men, especially during her time in CHIKARA, and it propelled her to the #430 spot. That's just something for those of you unfamiliar with Del Rey and her work to think about as we all await her reporting to FCW to start with her WWE contract.

Before I get out of here, I'm going to give you one name to look out for in next year's edition of the PWI 500. Uhaa Nation found himself in the #154 spot, even though he hasn't competed in a match since late-March after injuring his knee. He was on the fast track before his injury, and I think he would have been at least 20-30 spots higher if he remained healthy. He's well ahead of schedule in his return (initial reports said he'd be out for a year, but he's looking at being back in the ring before 2012 is over, which is incredible), and I have no doubt in my mind that he's looking at a top 100 ranking on next year's list, and that's without the thought of him winning more titles on the indy scene. If he does get some titles, you could very well be looking at him in the top 50. There's no hyperbole there, ladies and gentlemen. He's going to be pushed heavily in any promotion he becomes involved with, and that includes larger indy promotions like Dragon Gate USA and EVOLVE, as well as over in Japan, for the original Dragon Gate. This isn't the first time I've told you to keep your peepers peepin for this guy, but I mean it. When he returns from his injury, and he gets unleashed on the wrestling world, my original prediction stands.. within two or three years, he'll be the WWE/World Champion. Count on that.

What do you think of this year's PWI 500, ReaderLand? You've seen the list, you've seen the criteria, and you've heard some of my quick thoughts. Are you happy with the list? Are you someone who doesn't care about the list? Holla at ya boy and let me know what's on your mind. This should be interesting.
