Chair Shots: Your Arms Are Too Short To Box With God

I watched last night’s Raw with interest; interest that I hadn’t had in quite some time. I’ll be honest with you all; I’ve been struggling with my fandom. I’ve been watching professional wrestling longer than some of you have been alive. Like any relationship, there have been ups and downs along the way. But a sign that a relationship is over is when you just don’t really care enough anymore to get mad about the downs, or be excited about the ups. You see, that’s where I’ve been lately. During Christmas break, and the week long illness afterwards, I didn’t watch much. I took a break from the relationship, and I found myself not missing it all that much. But I watched last night, hoping for a spark that could reignite the flame of the relationship.

And I got it.

I’m not going to write another review of the Raw Supershow. Tito, Doc, and Hustle have all given great breakdowns of what happened last night. What I want to talk about is the last segment and what one short sentence can do to light a fire. This Raw was about two things- CM Punk and the return of The Rock. Sure John Cena and Dolph Ziggler put on a fantastic match at the start of the show, but by the end of the show, it was pretty much an afterthought. Unlike a lot of people, I really didn’t care all that much about The Rock coming back. Yes he’s one of the greatest WWE stars of this generation, but for me his time is up. He’s never going to be a full-time star in the WWE again, that much is pretty certain. In the next six months, Rock has three different movies coming out, The GI Joe and Fast and Furious sequels, and a body-building movie with Mark Wahlberg. The exposure on Raw certainly won’t hurt the box-office one bit. But one thing The Rock can do is ignite a crowd. He’s loud, he’s charismatic, and he comes up with catchphrases that make completely no sense, yet the crowd eats them up and chants them anyway.

But CM Punk didn’t care.

CM Punk, the master of the pipe-bomb (which is now an overused term even for him), got in The Rock’s face and proclaimed himself God. He didn’t allude to being God. He didn’t say maybe he was approaching God-like levels. He got in The Rock’s face and told The Rock “that his arms were too short to box with God.” I sat in my living room, and all I could do was say “Damn”. The Rock is an actor, and that’s perfectly clear, but he still always lets a little sliver of humanity show through his expressions, and like John Cena was able to do last year, CM Punk looked to have pissed The Rock off. And like John Cena did some of his best work during last year’s build-up with The Rock, I think we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg to what is coming between CM Punk and The Rock as they lead up to their match at Royal Rumble.

While many people look at The Rock as larger than life, CM Punk looked at The Rock as another statistic. The Rock’s schedule has been something talked about quite a bit. Should a part-timer become WWE Champion? Punk addressed that quite effectively by basically saying he didn’t care. No matter how many times Rock shows up, Punk said he’ll kick his ass- plain and simple. Sure Rock ended the night on top by hitting Punk with the Rock Bottom, but Punk just smirked and held the belt high.

This is the time of year when the WWE gets into full-swing. From now until Wrestlemania, this is what the WWE should concentrate on. The buzz out of last night’s Raw is considerably positive. It got an old jaded columnist back into the swing of things and for that I am grateful. I was entertained again, and while I still consider Raw being three hours a mistake, for the most part it kept my interest. And don’t forget, the next time you want to step in the ring….

“Your arms are too short to box with God.”
