Showin love to my homeboy Noc for the banner

"This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill.. fifteen percent concentrated power of will.. five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain.. one hundred percent reason to remember the name.."

Hustle. Remember the name, not that you were set to forget it anytime in the near future. What's poppin, ladies and gentlemen? I'm back one mo gen, ready to drop off another HIPRN banger for the world. Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park and Fort Minor fame brings us this week's intro line. A lot goes into my state of mind and writing these columns for all of you. Maybe my skill number is a little higher than just twenty, though. Ha. You know, I think it's just about that time. Shall I proceed? (Yes, indeed.) Less dew eet!!

I'm sure other people have done something like this, whether it be in a column, or in message board posts, but 2009 is freshly upon us, and there are certain things we're all looking forward to during the year. Things we want to see take place. Things we want to get accomplished. Things we want to experience. This is my list of those things. These aren't predictions of any sort. No, they're just what I would like to see take place, if I were in charge of things. As usual when I write these types of columns, this will be in no particular order.. just how things come to my mind.

Hawaii to host a UFC pay-per-view: A month or so ago, I read a bunch of rumors that there were talks of bringing a UFC pay-per-view to this state sometime in 2009, and I was excited about the news. MMA may not be bigger anywhere in the country than it is in Hawaii, and that's including Las Vegas, which is viewed as MMA Headquarters by a lot of folks. People here are getting into MMA in record numbers, whether it be watching live events, wearing TapOut gear, or even doing some MMA training themselves. Current UFC fighter BJ Penn is looked at like some sort of a god here. Hawaii's Aloha Stadium seats 50,000 people for football games, and it's rumored to be the spot UFC is looking at if they do come here. It'll be the company's first outdoor event, and they could easily sell the place out with 60-70,000+ people. Easily. Without trying to dip too far into the bag of hyperbole, it would go down as the biggest UFC event of all-time, and that's with or without Penn headlining the card.

Mr Kennedy to finally show me why the hell anyone cares about him: It's pretty obvious to me at this point that someone somewhere in the WWE Hierarchy wants to push Mr Kennedy, for one reason or another. I've come to accept that fact. I don't like it, but I accept it nonetheless. I'm interested to see where the current semi-storyline between Kennedy and MVP is going, not because I'm dying to watch Kennedy get back in the ring and wrestle, but because I'm a huge fan of MVP (as I've mentioned on numerous occasions), and it appears to be leading to some sort of a face run for the guy, who could work with Kennedy and try to use some of his popularity with live crowds. That was a long sentence. I've long looked at Kennedy as a one-trick pony of sorts, with nothing being brought to the table other than the ability to repeat the word "Kennedy", so I'm looking for something different from the guy. Nothing about his look, moveset, entrance music, etc stands out. I'm just looking for something to stand out from the rest of the roster. I'm not asking for an Extreme Makeover: Wrestler Edition, merely for a tweak here and there. That's not too much to ask for, is it?

Michelle McCool to stop stealing other people's finishing moves and making them look bad: I guess I could've just put "Michelle McCool to go back to being a teacher" here, and my point would've gotten across just as well, but I was feeling nice, so I'll just say that I hope she finds some sort of a semi-original finishing move, and if she can't do that, hope that she at least finds a move she can perform half decently. Her Styles Clash ripoff is gawdawful, and really, the move is one of those that is completely pointless, yet wins people over because of the "cool factor" it has. Wow.. you pancaked me to the mat when I was a mere foot above it.. holy shit, I'm basically paralyzed now. It just looks absolutely ridiculous when she does it, and I'd really like it to stop. That doesn't mean she needs to give us one of those fucking stupid physics-defying moves that people use in e-feds on occasion. If you currently e-fed, or have ever done any e-fedding in your life, you know the moves I'm talking about. The ones where the person does a 2160 degree powerbomb from the top of a 40-foot scaffold through 15 stacked tables, which are all on fire, and upon impact, they roll into a Texas Cloverleaf submission. No, she doesn't need to do something like that, although I'll say this.. if she performed that exact move, I'd become her slave for the rest of all eternity, and I'd murder anyone that ever said a negative word about her. Even you.

San Francisco 49ers sign or draft an impact WR: I mentioned this in my last column, but I'm dying for the Niners to bring in someone like Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree, Missouri WR Jeremy Maclin, Florida WR Percy Harvin, or Maryland WR Darrius Heyward-Bey. The team is moving in the right direction, and they appear to be a year or two away from being a legitimate contender in the NFC once again. QB Shaun Hill seems to be the answer to their problem at that position, at least in the short-term. RB Frank Gore, when healthy, is one of the best RBs in the NFL. TE Vernon Davis, though not the playmaker many would have hoped him to be at this point in his career, still has all the potential in the world. I like the job WR Isaac Bruce did this past season, but he's 119 years old, and he isn't exactly an explosive threat these days. I've read several mock drafts that have Crabtree headed to the Niners, and that makes me giddy to think about. Having any of the guys I've mentioned here on the 49ers would make me giddy. It needs to happen.

Umaga to be taken seriously: There aren’t many better "monster" workers in the world than Umaga, ladies and gentlemen. For a man of his size, he's got some great athleticism and speed, and he's got a nice hold of the psychological aspect of wrestling, just as most of the Samoan workers do. I'm not even saying that I want him to return and become the WWE Champion within a week of coming back, but just that he isn't some sort of glorified jobber, which is tough on a show that Triple H resides on. The possibility of a program involving Umaga and The Undertaker still makes me giddy, as I've mentioned in previous columns. Some rumors have Umaga returning to actually feud with Taker, but those rumors, of course, aren't always accurate, so I'll wait and see. Personally, I'd rather see him on Raw or ECW when he returns, but the "Returns To Smackdown" vignettes have already begun to air, which is fine. When he returns, I'll start my own "Countdown To Umaga VS The Undertaker: Hell In A Cell".. countdown.. which will make me jump smooth the fuck up off of my couch when it's announced.

Colt Brennan to be traded to a team that will actually provide him a chance to play: Going into last year's NFL Draft, I was anxious to see where Colt Brennan would be drafted. I wasn't out there saying that he'd be a starter immediately, a Pro Bowl performer by his second season, and a future Hall Of Famer by his fifth season, but I was sure that he could prove to the world that he could play in the NFL if given the opportunity. When the Washington Redskins took him in the sixth round, I immediately scratched my head, because they already had their young QB of the future in Jason Campbell, and it didn't appear he'd unseat Campbell as the starter. Even after a preseason where he looked really good, Colt couldn't even get a single pass attempt in during the regular season. Personally, if I'm going to have a young guy at QB on my team, I'd try to do my best to make sure that he's not being backed up by another young guy. I'd try to have nothing but veterans waiting in the wings, just in the event dude messes up. If Campbell were to seriously injure himself, putting in a completely untested player wouldn't be helping the team at all. Either keep veterans on the bench, or get the other young players some time on the field. There's really no point to me including this here, but damnit, I'm frustrated that the guy isn't getting a chance to prove he belongs in the NFL.

Ring Of Honor switches to live pay-per-views: The company keeps trying to expand, and other than a weekly TV show, live pay-per-views would be the next logical step in their attempt at growth. Their current PPVs are fun to watch, and are more than worth the $10-$15 price tag they carry, but the fact that they tape them two or so months before they air is getting to be a problem. To say that the company caters towards the "smart" fan would be an understatement. The problem with that is those fans are the exact ones getting their news and rumors on the internet, so they read the PPV results long before the show ever gets to be seen by the viewing public. They've read the results, they've already heard the reviews that are typical of RoHbots (the ones that give every match 172 stars, and every single thing they view is the greatest match/promo in the long history of professional wrestling), and they've seen where the storylines are headed after the taping.. so what real reason do they have to order the PPV when it comes out? Especially when a lot of them merely download the shows on the internet before they even make it to PPV, anyway (you know who you are.. ha). Obviously, live pay-per-views solve a big portion of that problem. Sure, there will still be those fans that download the show right after it goes off the air, just as they do with WWE and TNA shows, but a lot of them will understand the "big league" feel to it, order the shows, and they'll actually get to watch a show they don't already know the results to. I'd definitely buy the live shows, where as now, I only buy the shows if a certain match or two really catches my attention. Knowing what happens really kills the vibe for me, which is a big reason why I've never enjoyed Smackdown as much as Raw.

Hernandez to be given a legitimate chance at winning the TNA World Title: Some people are going to read that and think I'm crazy, and that's fine, because I read that and damn near think I'm crazy. Don't get me wrong.. I've been a fan of Hernandez for a few years now, but even as far back as a few months ago, there's no way I could have pictured him as any sort of a serious contender for the World Title. He was doing a fantastic job as a member of LAX, being the muscle to Homicide's speed and Lucha Thug-ness, but that was it. I wasn't happy with the booking of his cashing in of his Feast Or Fired title shot (I know it's shocking that a TNA booking decision didn't make me happy), but they did make Hernandez look good in the very brief match between he and Sting before the nWo.. I mean, Main Event Mafia.. came out to ruin the match. I'm hoping that it means some sort of a rematch in the future, and not just pushing him right back to being strictly a tag team star. If so, then there was absolutely no fucking point in having him win the title shot in the first place, and I know TNA would never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever do something completely pointless. No, definitely not them.

To see Kofi Kingston VS Shelton Benjamin: Sure, they could both be competing in this year's edition of Money In The Bank, and that would be spectacular, but I'm talking about giving them a one-on-one match where they have from between 15-20 minutes to work their magic. There are a few things working against that right now, obviously. The fact that they aren't on the same show is a problem, as well as the fact that midcard matches rarely get that kind of time in Vince McMahon's world. On the bright side, though, both men have enjoyed some very nice pushes during their WWE careers, so someone somewhere in the company is a fan of theirs. The feud could even start over something small.. something like Michael Cole calling Kofi "the most athletic man on the WWE roster" on Raw one week, and then have Shelton cut a promo on that week's Smackdown saying that HE is the person who holds that title. They could trade shots for a while on their respective shows, or, since the brand split doesn't mean much these days, have Shelton appear on Raw one week and either attack Kofi or cost him a match. I'm merely rambling here, but those are just my ideas. That feud needs to happen, and it needs to happen yesterday.

Los Angeles Lakers win the NBA Championship: Last year, the Lakers were so agonizingly close to being the champs. They made it to the NBA Finals, and then lost. Second place = first loser. I caught a lot of shit from people for their performance against the Boston Celtics in the Finals, and I'm happy to see that it looks like I'll at least be set up for a chance at revenge. The Lakers are looking tremendous thus far this season, with their starting lineup firing on all cylinders, and their bench as deep and hungry as any second-line in the entire league. Sure, teams like the San Antonio Spurs, New Orleans Hornets, Houston Rockets (when healthy), and Phoenix Suns have shown they can give the Lakers some problems in the Western Conference, but nobody has proven they can string those problems on over an entire postseason series. The West really does look like it belongs to the Lakers this season. From there, bring it on, Celtics. Bring it on, Orlando Magic. Bring it on, Cleveland Cavaliers.

Eminem to release an album that isn't full of bullshit tracks like "Ass Like That" or "Big Weenie": It's almost sad to see how far Eminem has fallen off over the years. He was, arguably, the "Best Rapper Alive" at one point in time, and now, he's lucky to even be considered better than hip-hop's new "Great White Hope", Asher Roth. There was a time that Em could release a song and it would be a gigantic event, whether it was a single, freestyle, or merely a throwaway mixtape track. Now, people merely shrug their shoulders when they hear he's coming out with something new. With the death of his best friend and fellow D12 member, Proof, taking place since his last album, Em should have plenty of material to work with that could/would/should help him return to the level he was at in past years. If the death of your best friend doesn't motivate you to make some good music, nothing will, and you have no business putting out another half-assed piece of work just to try and collect a paycheck. Let's see what you've got, Em.

Matt Hardy to find even a tiny bit of a personality and to stop being so fucking shitty: I know he has some, deep down inside, but it has been so long since he's shown any of it, it's easy to forget all of his v1 days and think he's basically Bender from Futurama, live and in the flesh. He might be the one and only wrestler on the entire WWE roster that I have absolutely zero interest in watching, and yes, that's even counting Mr Kennedy. Now that Matt has dropped the ECW World Title to Jack Swagger (Side Note: How surprising was that booking decision?? Oh, and Side Note Part Deux: I hate to say I told you so, but.. I was the first one around these parts to say Jack Swagger had big things in his future, and sure enough.. he did, although I didn't think it would be so big so quickly), perhaps he can perform better as the challenger, hungry to regain his title, because damnit, he was boring the ever-loving shit out of me as the champion. People hate on John Cena and like this douchebag? Really? Everything that the haters bitch about in regards to Cena, other than ZOMG CEAN WINZ 2 MUCCCHHHHH, more than describes Matt Hardy to an absolute tee. Also, can someone tell him to just hit the damn Twist Of Fate already? There's no need for the 18 minutes worth of posing beforehand, forcing his opponent to just stay in a bent over position (sounds familiar to men in Matt's life, I'm sure) like an idiot while they wait for Matt to go "AHHHHH!!!" just like he does with his legdrop from the middle rope. Fuck. I need to stop before I turn this into an entire anti-Matt column.

Awesome Kong to sign with WWE: As much as TNA's Knockouts Division has been carrying the company since it started, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that Kong's shelf life there can only be so long. They only have a handful of women that even deserve to be in the ring with her, and she's beaten them on multiple occasions already. Sure, it's fun to watch her completely destroy worthless talent like Christy Hemme, but she needs something better. I'd pay money to see Kong VS Beth Phoenix, Kong VS Melina, Kong VS Mickie James, Kong VS Natalya, etc. Perhaps Kong could even knock some humility into Michelle McCool, but I should know at this point in my life not to expect miracles to just happen out of nowhere.

Bryan Danielson to sign with WWE: Yes, I'm a Ring Of Honor fan. However, with that said, I realize that there isn't a whole lot left for Bryan Danielson to accomplish and prove within the confines of the RoH roster. He's a former RoH World Champion, he's beaten each and every big name on the roster (and beaten them numerous times, in most cases), and he's put on five-star classics for years. Now it may be time for the man to move on to the biggest wrestling promotion on the planet. The current WWE roster is as small, wrestler size-wise, as it has been in years, and probably as small as it has ever been. Gone are the days when the "small" guys were 250 pounds and straight out of a Chemistry Lab. Guys like Rey Mysterio, Evan Bourne, CM Punk, Jeff Hardy, Matt Hardy, Kofi Kingston, etc etc etc are all on the "small" side of the scale these days, and all of those guys are and/or have been reaching big-time levels of success. Absolutely nothing about Bryan Danielson says that he couldn't achieve success like that as a member of the WWE roster. He has more technical wrestling skill than any of the aforementioned names, and while people say he may not have "the look", whatever that means, it can be argued that Matt Hardy doesn't quite possess "the look", either. Other than blind hatred for RoH or Indy Wrestling, in general, people can't actually come up with a legitimate reason why Danielson couldn't be a success on the WWE roster, and I always find that pretty funny. Especially the hatred of Indy Wrestling. I guess these asshats think that all of their favorite wrestlers were born as top-notch WWE talent and never had to wrestle Indy shows themselves. Whodathunkit?

Samoa Joe to sign with WWE: Wishful thinking? Perhaps. It's probably more along the lines of me merely wanting one of my favorite wrestlers to get away from the clusterfuck that is TNA. To this day, I still say that TNA dropped the ball with Joe, waiting far too long to finally put their World Title on him, and their booking of him since his title win has done nothing to help him regain whatever magic he lost while he was running in place in the upper-midcard. He's still one of the best guys on the TNA roster, sure, but there was a time that he was probably the most over man in the entire American wrestling scene, let alone just in TNA. After the Frontline VS Main Event Mafia feud is over, what does that leave for Joe in TNA? Another feud with AJ Styles? While that would be fun, because they always put on some good matches, we've seen it before, and we've seen it numerous times. Joe VS Matt Morgan? No thanks. For my own selfish reasons, I'd absolutely love to see Joe and Homicide restart the feud they had while they were both in RoH, but it still remains to be seen if the TNA fans would be open to Homicide having that high of a spot on the roster. I think he's deserving, but really, what the hell do I know? The Joe/Cide feud would be somewhat fresh, as at least they haven't feuded during their time together with TNA. If Joe were to sign with WWE, there would be feud after feud for him to be a part of, and it would be something fresh on almost every level, whether it was with his good friend John Cena, with Batista, with Triple H (lololololol), or even reliving his "legendary" feud with CM Punk, which would almost be a guaranteed direction the company would go in. No complaints here, as long as Joe's WWE run didn't affect the way Umaga was used.

DJ Khaled to stop appearing in music videos, and to stop ad-libbing over songs: Honestly, there's no more annoying person in the world of music right now than DEEEEEJAYYYYY KHAAAAALEDDDDD, for the following simple reasons: WEEEEE DA BEEEEESTTTTT.. I DOOOOO THIS FOR THE HOOOOOD.. WEEEEE GLOOOOOBALLLLL NOWWWWW! He absolutely ruins any song he appears on, which is a fucking shame, because I'm a fan of a lot of those songs otherwise. Another thing that irritates me about the guy is how he appears in videos, standing right next to the person singing/rapping, and does a lipsync performance of whatever they're saying. It's not even entire lines or paragraphs, either. He usually just mimics the last few words of a particular line, like he was some sort of mute hype man or something. Yes, I realize this wish is something really small, but because this is my column, it features things I want, and fucking A, this is something I want. Khaled, seriously.. stick to making beats, and keep the fuck away from appearing on the songs and in the videos. If you ruin Ace Hood for me, I'll blow up your car.

Christian's WWE return to not end up like Big Show's WWE return: By that, I mean that it was heavily rumored on the internet before it happened, then it started off hot when it finally did happen, only to quickly fade away to the point where I even forget the guy is still on the roster sometimes. For any of you that have been paying any attention in recent months, you'd know that Christian's rumored return to The Land Of McMahon has been talked about to no end, and people are counting the days down until it happens. If it does actually take place, it'll be a big event, no matter what storyline he's placed in, but with the stories that Vince McMahon has never been a huge fan of Christian's singles work, there's plenty of potential for his return to fizzle out within a couple of months, and he'll be back to being a midcarder by the time the kiddies take their summer vacations. I'm not saying any of that because it's what I want to happen, or what I'm predicting will happen, but I like to think realistically, and the possibility is definitely there. Hell, Chris Jericho's WWE return was talked about much more than Christian's has been, and it was dying a slow, painful death for a while when it happened, so it remains to be seen what kind of heights Christian can reach if/when he finally does come back.

Steve Austin to return for one final "big money" match: It doesn't even have to be at WrestleMania 25, although it would be the obvious choice, for multiple reasons. If Hulk Hogan VS Shawn Michaels can happen at SummerSlam, I fail to see why Austin's final match couldn't take place at SummerSlam, as well. This year's SummerSlam takes place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Staples Center just so happens to be a mere five miles away from Hollywood. Steve Austin.. "Hollywood".. to quote a great philosopher: I'm just sayin.

For me to get back to writing daily columns: I wrote nearly 60 columns in the 2008 calendar year, and if I had my way, I would've put out another 365 during 2009, but because of my current situation, my half-goal is more along the lines of putting out 150-200 columns this year. The column you're reading is my second one of the year, of course, so one way or another, I still have a long road to travel down. I don't know exactly what it says about me, but doing a column every week simply isn't satisfying enough for me. That's fine and dandy, but it leaves me feeling as if I'm cheating people out of some reading material, even though I'm technically only required to provide a column every 21 days. What can I say? I love what I do. I'm coming for all the records, whether they be "Most Total Columns Written", "Longest Amount Of Time On The LoP Main Page", or even the highly sought after but rarely discussed "Least Amount Of Columns That Made Any Sense" record. Pray for me.

For more WCW-related DVD sets to be released: By the time this column drops, I hope to have, at the very least, begun watching the Best Of Starrcade DVD set that was released earlier this week. Since the day Vince McMahon became the owner of the entire WCW/NWA video library, I've been waiting for numerous DVD sets such as that one to be released. Sure, Vince had resentment towards anything that had to do with the WCW name, but I figured the dollar signs would be too much for him to pass up on, and he'd continue to make a profit on their matches and history. Until now, I was wrong, for the most part. Sure, there were bits and pieces of WCW and/or NWA footage on various DVD sets that have been released since the sale of WCW, but this is the first set to revolve completely around the company (although the set on the Four Horsemen was pretty close, using very little WWF/WWE footage). The AWA had a DVD set come out before WCW did, for crying out loud (by the way, I vow to never use "for crying out loud" in a column ever again). Starrcade, being WCW's version of WrestleMania, was one of the more obvious choices for a DVD set, but there are plenty of other options to run with. A DVD for something such as WarGames would be fun, even if it was only one or two discs, instead of the "normal" three discs. If/when he leaves TNA, a DVD set on Sting would be a great option, even if Sting only agreed to appear on the DVD and not live WWE programming. They could also do an nWo DVD set, from Scott Hall's debut on Nitro all the way through the nWo Hollywood VS nWo Wolfpac feud, as long as they refrained from mentioning the bastardized WWE version of the group. I think it would be kinda funny if they released a Road Wild DVD, or something random along the lines of "El Dandy's Greatest Hits", but that's just me, I suppose. I'm hoping that the Starrcade set does well as far as sales go, because if it doesn't, I really don't see Vince opening his pockets to get more DVD sets produced if they're going to be viewed as "failures" right off the bat. Personally, I think the Starrcade set is "must-see" viewing for fans, from the newer/younger fans who weren't around to watch any of that stuff as it happened to the fans of my age/experience bracket who are always looking to relive the stuff we watched growing up. Do yourselves a favor, ladies and gentlemen, and go pick the set up if you have an opportunity to do so.

Writer's Note: As I mentioned in my last column, I originally wanted this edition to be a preview of tomorrow night's UFC 93 pay-per-view, but because of time restraints, I wasn't able to make it happen. Being somewhat new to the MMA scene still, I need to do a lot of research leading up to my UFC-related columns, and seeing as how I'm paying for every minute I'm using a computer, I'd rather spend my time actually typing up a column I don't need to do research on, instead of one that I'd need to research for a few days before actually getting anything typed up. I do know that my MMA Guru had already finished his section, which he can now turn into his very own column up on the LoPForums.com site, if it hasn't been done by now, so at least for the time being, you can feed your need for MMA columns there. While you're there, check out everyone else's work, and feel free to drop some feedback for the writers.

Writer's Note Part Deux: I don't mean to toot my own horn, but, uh.. toot toot. First, Dwight Howard, and now, Derrick Rose. Before Dwight Howard was the "in" choice as the #1 pick in the NBA Draft a few years ago, I was the first and only person praising him in the Sports Forum over at LoPForums.com, while everyone else was nearly unanimous in saying that UConn's Emeka Okafor should be the #1 choice. Here we are, and Dwight Howard is an absolute superstar on one of the best teams in the entire league (I told you about those Magic, Mac), while Okafor is a one-dimensional fringe talent for one of the worst teams in basketball. Before Derrick Rose had ever stepped foot on a basketball court for the Memphis Tigers last year, I was the first and only person praising him, saying that he was a PG megastud (no homo) and would immediately step in as an NBA player and shine. People said he was overrated, people said he was a one-year wonder, people said he was making a mistake in turning pro.. I stood by my original stance, and I've been proven right again. Basketball and football, I'll pick the next big things before anyone else. Hmm.. kinda like how I do in wrestling, as well. I really do have crystal balls, folks. Smooth as eggs.

2009 should be a fun year, no matter what direction it goes in, but I just needed to throw out some of my hopes and wishes, to give everyone (including myself, of course) something to look back on at this time next year, just to see if I got anything that I asked for. Thank you for reading another edition of the column that just lets its Soul Glooooooooooooooooooo and feels oh so silky smooth. Randy Watson recently declared me his favorite wrestling columnist in the entire world, and I've been offered a part to play John The Fireman in the "What's Up?" episode of "That's My Mama". I believe the children are our future, and that we need to teach them well and let them lead the way. *ahem* So, uh, yeah.. thanks for reading yet another edition of HIPRN. I said that already, didn't I? Damnit. Anyway, keep your peepers peepin next Friday for another banger, and one that will have a Royal Rumble theme to it. That has always been my favorite non-WrestleMania wrestling PPV anywhere since I was a little kid, so I'm really looking forward to watching it. Until then, from the Pearl Highlands Kinko's, I bid you farewell. Aloha and Mahalo Nui Loa.
