Hustle Is Posting Right Now: Volume 50 ("Racism" Edition)
By Hustle
Jul 1, 2009 - 12:35:43 AM

Good lookin out, Ro.

"There's nothing like it.. one of a kind, his mind.. there's nothing like it.."

This week's intro line comes to us from Brooklyn's own Wu-Tang affiliate, Priest (aka Killah Priest). He paints a nice picture as to what makes me tick.. nobody thinks like I do, not here, nor there.. and you'll never find another quite like me. Hallelujah Holla Back.. welcome to yet another edition of the column that dominated the Summer Jam stage.. Hustle Is Posting Right Now. I'm posting right now, so damnit, that makes me the man who has more bounce than a 64-ounce Homestyle Tropicana.. Papa Santa.. ya boy, Hustle, is back in the LordsOfPain building, reporting for duty. You may have noticed that I was absent over the past two weeks, and for that, I apologize. Some things came up, and Raw had me so absolutely frazzled, so I needed to take some time off to recharge my batteries. I'm back, even though Raw still pisses me off and makes me want to pull my hair out. I ask this question a lot, but here it goes once more.. how is everyone out there in ReaderLand? The countdown to my 27th birthday has begun, so I'm doing mighty fine on that front, but I'm starting to feel a little older. We're 18 days and counting from my very special day. Hooray me. The celebration will be of epic proportions. There's something else that would be cause for an epic celebration, and that's the start of this here column, so, uh, I think it's about that time. Shall I proceed? (Yes, indeed.) Less dew eet!!

In-Column Writer's Note - The column I originally had planned for a few weeks back has been put on the shelf for a bit, and there's a possibility that it'll be permanently removed from the playlist. I ran into some troubles with it, and since someone else had the same idea for a column at just about the same time, I figured he could perhaps do some justice with it instead. This has been, by a country mile, the longest stretch of writer's block that I've suffered through, not just in my column-writing career, but in any creative aspect since I was a child. It's frustrating beyond all comprehension, as all of you that write will understand. Romey, your column idea is still a great one, and is being worked on, but something else came up after you made your suggestion.

In-Column Writer's Note Part Deux - The main theme of this week's column is a bit of a sensitive subject for a lot of people. I'm going to freestyle it a bit, so this warning may not even be necessary, but there may be some words and terms that some may find offensive in this column, so be prepared. Again, I'm freestyling, so I don't really know what will be included and what won't be, but I wanted to get it out of the way, just incase. Why I didn't just make this part of the original Writer's Note, I don't know.

"Racism's still alive, they just be concealing it.."

This may come as quite the shock to a lot of you, but racism is, indeed, still alive in this world. Personally, I'll never totally understand how we're halfway through 2009 and have yet, as a people, to find ways of accepting things that are "different", without viewing them as being such. This is a wrestling column, though, so I must narrow my discussion on racism to the world of professional wrestling. The idea for this column comes from several weeks of (sometimes heated) discussion in a few different threads at LoPForums about whether or not Vince McMahon and the entire WWE, as a whole, is racist.

At face value, the argument sounds absolutely ridiculous. There are minority wrestlers all across the WWE roster, both past and present. The Rock? Minority x2. Yokozuna? Minority that played another type of minority on TV. Pedro Morales? Minority. Shelton Benjamin? Minority. R-Truth? Minority. The Great Khali? Minority. MVP? Minority. Carlito & Primo? Minorities. Rey Mysterio? Minority. Eddie Guerrero? Minority. I'm sure you folks get the point. Obviously, the argument runs deeper than just "Are there minority wrestlers in the company?", but it's nice to view some of the names, past and present, that weren't full-blooded caucasians, and just what they've been able to accomplish with the company.

Merriam-Webster defines "Racism" as the following: A belief that race is the primary determinent of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race; racial prejudice or discrimination

Merriam-Webster defines "Stereotype" as the following: Something conforming to a fixed or general pattern, especially a oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment

I just wanted to post the definitions of both words, in case some of you didn't quite know the difference. As you can see, they aren't the same thing. Shocking, I know. I've been watching wrestling for quite some time, and I can't think of very many instances where there were "racist" moments in the WWF or WWE, whether they be racist characters, racist things said in promos, etc. However, I can think of times where stereotypes were put forward. In fact, I can think of countless times where we got to see stereotypes..

- The redneck/hillbilly wrestler
- The flambouyant homosexual wrestler
- The anti-American (various races and ethnicities have played this role)
- The Asian wrestler that is a "Martial Arts Master" of some sort
- The laid-back "Caribbean" wrestler
- The Samoan "savage" wrestler
- The African-American wrestler with an "urban" flavor

Really, the list goes on and on. I don't see anything in there about so-and-so being "better" than so-and-so because of the color of his skin. It's usually just Wrestler A (playing a character) VS Wrestler B (playing a character), with either Wrestler A or Wrestler B winning, and that's that. That's not good enough, though, so let's dig a little further..

Vince McMahon is a lot of things.. some good, some bad. One of the things that everyone can admit about him, regardless of their personal preference towards him, is that he's a businessman to the very core of his being. He'd try and sell Raid to a bug (as well as salt to a slug), and he'd probably succeed in doing so more often than not. To be a great businessman, what is the one and only color you need to see? Go ahead and think about it for a moment. I'll wait.

.....

....

..

....

.....

Did you guess "green", ladies and gentlemen? If so, give yourselves a round of applause, because you're correct. Why would Vince McMahon, a self-made billionaire, pass up an opportunity to make himself millions of dollars just because it would mean pushing some "dirty minority" of some sort? How does that even begin to make sense to any of you?

Here comes a bit of the "controversial" side of this column, folks. Let me preface it by saying that I'm a minority several times over. I have Hawaiian, Puerto Rican, Jamaican, and even a little bit of Chinese blood flowing through my veins. I hate for this to come across incorrectly to some people, so I felt the need to share my ethnicities with you. Anyway, now that I've gotten that out of the way, I have a request to make..

Black people, please stop making excuses for why you can't ahead, and using race as a "crutch" for what takes place in your life. Obviously, I'm not referring to all black people. That's definitely not the case. However, I'm sick and tired of seeing black people fuck their own lives up, but are quick to turn around and say they're being held down because of the color of their skin. I know people that can't get jobs because they have several felonies on their criminal record, but do they take the blame for those choices they made in the past? No, it's the "white man holding us down". Sure, there are times in life where the color of your skin is unfairly held against you for one reason or another, but life isn't about making excuses. People like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are doing nothing but making black people look like they can't have success in this day and age without trying to play the race card every possible chance they get (hey, there's those pesky stereotypes again). If I never see those two motherfuckers on TV again, it'll be too soon. Again, nobody is responsible for what happens in your life other than.. get this.. you. If you drop out of school, turn to a life of crime, can't speak properly, and smell of weed, don't be surprised when you can't get a proper job that will pay you more than minimum wage. That's just how life works, and that goes for all people.. white, black, yellow, red, brown, green, purple, orange with pink stars.. all people. Man the fuck up.

*ahem*

The current crop of minority employees in the company are doing alright for themselves, in my opinion. You have men who were former World Champions of the brands (Great Khali, Mark Henry, Batista, Rey Mysterio, Chavo Guerrero), men who are or have been solid midcard-level guys (Shelton Benjamin, MVP, R-Truth, Carlito, Kofi Kingston), former Women's Champions (Gail Kim, Mickie James), a ring announcer for your #1 show (Lilian Garcia, who will be leaving the company at the end of the year, to be replaced, as the rumor goes, with an Asian woman), several FCW talents, a few producers/road agents (Gerald Brisco, Jack Garea, Ricky Steamboat), the company physician, a Spanish announce team, etc. Keep in mind, that's just the CURRENT people. It doesn't count the rest of the people that have come and gone since Vince McMahon began running the show. That doesn't exactly sound like an employee list of someone who is a card-carrying member of the Ku Klux Klan, does it? That's far too many non-whites for David Duke, that's for sure.

So.. to be honest, I intended this to be a mini-rant, but a mini-rant that would lead to a bit of reader participation and a trip back to this subject in a future column. I would like my readers to get at me.. e-mail me, PM me at LoPForums, post in my feedback thread at LoPForums, message/comment me on MySpace, message/wall post me on Facebook, message me on PSN, whatever.. and let me whether or not you think Vince McMahon and WWE, as a whole, are racist. If you do, I want you to give me your reasoning, whether it's so-and-so not being pushed enough, a certain gimmick, or what have you. If you don't, I want you to to also give me your reasoning, even if it's something I already said in this column. In two weeks (perhaps more, depending on the amount of feedback I get), I'll return to this subject and see what you, the HIPRN Universe, has to say about it. I may include your points in the column, so be prepared.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A lot of people have been talking about this 15-person trade that Raw, Smackdown, and ECW have pulled off this week, and a lot of that talk has been of the negative variety, based on what I've been seeing. Honestly, I don't understand why that is, as each brand received some nice pieces to freshen things up a bit. Let's take a look at it, shall we?

Raw gets Mark Henry - He received a bigger face pop last night than Evan Bourne and Jack Swagger combined, and then went on to get even larger face pops throughout his match with Randy Orton. He looked more motivated than he has in years (the face pops probably had a lot to do with that), and he went on to shock the ever-loving hell out of me by getting the clean pinfall victory over the current WWE Champion. The vast majority of the IWC get "I don't like this guy" terribly confused with "this guy sucks" when it comes to Mark Henry. I've never understood the "this guy is garbage because I don't enjoy his work" way of thinking. Various people don't entertain me, but that's where the line is drawn. Matt Hardy bores me to death, but does that mean he sucks? No, it just means I dislike him. I'm not a self-centered prick like a lot of you are, and I don't think my opinion is the be-all-end-all of things. The world doesn't revolve around you fucks. Deal with it. Mark Henry is one of the best "big man" wrestlers alive today, and that is why he's getting a push.

Raw gets Evan Bourne - I think this move is a bit overdue, actually, as I figured they'd find a way to "mysteriously" move him to Raw even before the Draft. He's hit a bit of a wall in the last month or two, and there really wasn't a whole lot left for him to accomplish in ECW, outside of becoming ECW Champion. For the most part, he was probably going to bounce around from one "nothing" feud to another. On Raw, his "nothing" feuds will at least be for the United States Title, which is a definite step up.

Raw gets Jack Swagger - If this isn't a sign of how the company views Swagger, I don't know what is. In the span of a few months, he went from nobody to ECW Champion to member of the Raw roster. With his mix of size, speed, athleticism, strength, and mat wrestling ability, he's able to have a watchable (at the very least) match with just about anybody on the roster, and now is as good a time as any to open the doors and showcase him to a larger audience every week. He'll be main eventing Raw in a year or so, but for the time being, the US Title picture gains another exciting name.

Raw gets Gail Kim - I'll be the first one to admit that her WWE return hasn't gone anywhere near as smoothly as I thought/hoped/expected it would, and that's really unfortunate, in my opinion. She has everything needed to be a top name in the ranks of the WWE Divas, but nothing has clicked right since she came back from TNA. I'm hoping (and I'm sure the company is hoping, as well) that a change in scenery will be what she needs to get things going. Working with Beth Phoenix and Mickie James should do her some good.

Raw gets Alicia Fox - Let's see.. when Alicia Fox was originally on Smackdown, I thought she was hot. When Alicia Fox was on ECW, I thought she was hot. When Alicia Fox was moved back to Smackdown to be alongside Michelle McCool, she became worse and worse looking every week. Now, Alicia Fox is moving to Raw, away from McCool and her estrogenical treachery, so I have my fingers crossed that she'll return to her hot ways.

ECW gets William Regal - I love, love, love this move. For those of you that have been reading me for a while, I had a column before the WWE Draft where I said Regal should move to ECW and become a legitimate contender for the ECW Title. Now, it appears that will be happening. At worst, he basically takes over Finlay's role, and that he'll be a solid "upper-tier" guy that helps put people over on their way to winning the title. Either way, he's capable of putting on a great match every single time he steps into a wrestling ring. Who this hurts is the new names that have yet to be called up to ECW, because they're in for a world of hurt when they face Regal. Welcome to the big time, kids.

ECW gets Shelton Benjamin - I'm sure some will view this move as Shelton being punished or even misused, but that's not how I see it. Realistically, he would be lost in the shuffle completely on Raw, and on Smackdown, he's the seventh (at best) member of the "Smackdown Six". On ECW, he immediately goes to the top of the class, and becomes a contender for the ECW Title. It may not be the title some envisioned for him, but them's the breaks. He just hasn't proved that he's worthy of the two "main" titles in the company yet. Maybe he'll finally prove himself worthy one day, but for now, ECW Champion Shelton Benjamin doesn't sound that bad at all. (*EDIT* This was typed out before tonight's episode of ECW. Holy shit.)

ECW gets Goldust - ECW, without a doubt, is the brand where all the young, up-and-coming talent go, and if there's one thing that roster can't have too much of, it's veteran leadership. While he's in better shape and is putting on better matches than the last time he was a semi-regular member of the WWE roster, I still don't think he'll be getting title gold anytime soon. He's what would be considered "enhancement talent" on ECW, but damnit, he'd be great in that role, as long as he continues to stay in shape and remain motivated.

ECW gets Brie & Nikki Bella - Well, umm.. hmm.. let me think about this one for a bit. Other than bringing two pretty faces (One pretty face? Well, you know what I mean..) to the brand, I can't think of what the point is of these two now being on ECW. Backstage announcers once Gregory Helms becomes a wrestler once again? Valets? Props to be shown in various backstage segments? This was a bit of a head-scratcher.

Smackdown gets Matt Hardy - To say things weren't working for Matt on Raw would be quite the understatement. Since being drafted, his time on Raw has been a total disaster. He's been floundering around, just like I said he would. Turning heel on his brother gave the fans a reason to care about him as a heel.. when he was facing his brother. Once that feud was over, he might as well have not been there at all. Obviously, a return to Smackdown opens the door for his feud with Jeff to continue, but there's no guarantee of that happening, really. Whether or not the feud is restarted, the taped atmosphere of Smackdown will help out Matt Hardy tenfold. The production team can work their magic on his matches, and take care of little botches that he's been having recently, as well as making it appear as if he doesn't move at a snail's pace. On a personal note, having Michael Cole calling Matt Hardy matches was sending me to the fourth level of hell every week, so that's another reason why I'm happy to see Matt heading to Friday nights.

Smackdown gets Finlay - Depending on whether he's a face or a heel, Finlay is just about as perfect of a worker for people like John Morrison, Dolph Ziggler, etc to work with. I don't expect him to move up or down the card, but instead, he'll continue with the same role that he had on ECW, basically being an in-ring teacher to the younger wrestlers, and another solid wrestler to face the veterans. Personally, I would've rather seen Finlay and Regal on the same brand, as a feud between those two would be better than anything currently going on in wrestling, but eh, I still hold out hope that it'll happen again one day.

Smackdown gets The Hart Dynasty - To be perfectly honest, I don't quite know how I feel about this move just yet. On one hand, I'm glad that they weren't split up at such an early stage in their development. I'm also glad that they'll get a chance to perform in front of a larger audience, and with names like Rey Mysterio, John Morrison, CM Punk, Edge, Chris Jericho, etc. It also makes sense to get Natalya onto a brand that actually has a Women's division she can be a part of. On the other hand, however, I'm not sure if David Hart Smith is ready for such a jump. Tyson Kidd has been ready for a shot at the "big time" for a while now, although it's not like a stay with ECW would've destroyed him. Smith, however, has shown various flashes of potential, but hasn't been anywhere near as consistent as he probably should be at this point. This is one that I'll have to wait and see on before I can make a complete decision.

All in all, each brand gained something with the trade. Raw gets a fresh infusion of young talent, and has potentially added two new main eventers to a main event scene that has been absolutely dreadful recently. ECW gets more veteran talent, and has two names to add to their own main event scene. They also have the room to bring up more guys from FCW, as there weren't too many open spots before the trade. Smackdown gets four wrestlers that can all be solid additions to their already solid talent list. Raw and Smackdown are already better than they were, and while ECW isn't, it's nowhere near as bad as some people are making it out to be. They didn't get "raped", or anything even close to it. Their new additions will start paying off immediately, and after an FCW call-up or two, they'll be right back where they were a few days ago, if not even better.

Hustle Highlight Of The Week: Well, several weeks, I suppose, so.. HHOTPSW? One of the most exciting tag team matches I've seen in a long, long time gets the nod for this week's HHOTPSW. Tyler Black & KENTA VS Austin Aries & Katsuhiko Nakajima from RoH's Take No Prisoners 2 pay-per-view was downright amazing to watch. When KENTA and Nakajima squared off against each other, it was just magical to watch, with both men having standoffs straight out of a Bruce Lee movie. Aries was another shining star in the match, as well, even though it pains me to admit it. I've never liked Aries, but his recent gimmick change, becoming "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived", is starting to win me over. It's not quite the same as if I began to like Matt Hardy or anything, but scaled down, it still makes me feel as if I need to hose myself off. His selljob of a KENTA missile dropkick was just priceless. Seriously, folks, if you get an opportunity to watch this match, please do so. You won't regret it.

Honorable mentions for the past several weeks would be.. Realizing that Tony Atlas could still put on a half-decent match (ECW - Two weeks ago).. Christian & Jack Swagger VS Hart Dynasty (ECW - Two weeks ago).. "Glad"-imir Kozlov (ECW - Two weeks ago).. Necro Butcher VS Jimmy Jacobs in a No DQ Match (Take No Prisoners 2).. Roderick Strong VS Alex Koslov (Take No Prisoners 2).. CM Punk VS Chris Jericho (Smackdown - Two weeks ago).. Jeff Hardy VS Edge (Smackdown - Two weeks ago).. Miguel Cotto VS Joshua Clottey (Boxing).. Rich Franklin VS Wanderlei Silva (UFC 99).. Jerry Lynn losing the RoH World Title.. CM Punk VS Jeff Hardy VS Edge (Raw - Two weeks ago).. Jeff Hardy VS Chris Jericho (Smackdown - Last Week).. John Morrison VS Edge (Smackdown - Last Week, and a match that I almost gave the nod to).. Diego Sanchez VS Clay Guida (UFC Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale).. Santina being "fired".. John Cena's in-ring promo towards The Miz (Raw - Last Week).. John Morrison VS CM Punk (Smackdown - This past week).. Jeff Hardy & Rey Mysterio VS Edge & Chris Jericho (Smackdown - This past week).. Rey Mysterio VS Chris Jericho (The Bash, and a match that I almost gave the nod to).. Mark Henry getting well-deserved face pops and appearing extra motivated (Raw - This week)

Writer's Note: Congratulations to my Los Angeles Lakers for winning the NBA championship. They beat the Orlando Magic in five games, and I'm excited as all hell about it. As a Lakers fan, I've gotten used to a certain level of excellence, and it feels like far too long since they've won a title last. I'm happy to see everyone on the team get a ring, except for Sasha Vujacic, who can choke on a dick for all I care. Yes, I like Adam Morrison more than I like Sasha Vujacic. That guy is just awful, and he hasn't contributed anything to the team in forever.

Now comes the dramatic part, as the Lakers head into the offseason with both Trevor Ariza and Lamar Odom as free agents, and the likely scenario is that they'll have to choose one or the other to re-sign, and let the other one go and sign a huge deal with another team. I do hold out hope for both men returning to the team, and it sure sounds like the Los Angeles front office will do absolutely everything in their power to bring them both back. They sold their first round pick in this past week's NBA Draft just so they could get extra money to use in the attempt to re-sign Ariza and Odom. That's a bit of a risky decision, and I don't think the organization would've done it unless they figured the odds were good of bringing both players back for at least one more season.

Writer's Note Part Deux: It really hasn't been a good few weeks for celebrities, has it? With Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, and Billy Mays all passing away in such a short amount of time, the tributes have all been coming in too quickly to process. That's not even mentioning the recent passing of Japanese wrestling legend Mitsuharu Misawa, who died in the ring during a match for Pro Wrestling NOAH.

Misawa's passing hit me somewhat hard. I've been a fan of his since damn near the time I first became a member of the IWC, getting to download various matches of his through the years, until I eventually stepped it up and began buying Puro DVDs from various sites. I'm sure most of you reading this right now will have only known the name Mitsuharu Misawa because of the press his death has received, but allow me to put it like this.. not only is he one of the very best wrestlers Japan (and the world, in general) has ever seen, but he was a great promoter, starting NOAH from the ground up, turning it into one of the bigger wrestling promotions in all of Japan. Basically, his death was a bit of a combination of what it would mean to North American wrestling fans if Ric Flair and Vince McMahon passed away.

Jackson's passing absolutely floored me. I woke up that morning, and on my way to wash my face and do all the "freshening up" jibberyjoo, "C" pointed to the TV. When I turned to look, and I saw "Breaking News: Michael Jackson Dead" scrolling by, I just stood there, mouth wide open. I grew up listening to Michael's music, from his earliest Jackson 5 stuff to his more recent work. The man, simply put, was the greatest entertainer to ever entertain in the history of entertainment. To this day, I watch some of his music videos and look on in amazement at his dance moves, and just how effortless he made them look. Such a huge loss to the music world. Everybody treats death with different levels of respect, but personally, I like to look back at the good things somebody contributed to the world. Did Michael have his fair share of eccentricities? Of course he did. It doesn't mean he has any less hit songs, though. Oh, and to those of you that are saying he's irrelevant because he hasn't had any hits or done anything worthwhile in several years, I want you to find any members of your family that served their country in Desert Storm, Vietnam, World War 2, etc. Then, I want you to kick them down a flight of stairs and tell them to stop hanging on to the past and contribute something TODAY. Then, I want you to realize just how ridiculous you're being. A contribution is a contribution, whether it happened an hour ago or a century ago.

Combine this with a ".5" collaboration that I did with SUPERFAN in a LoPForums.com tournament a while back, as well as my HIPE editions, and I'm climbing towards that magical mark of 100 columns completed. SkittleZ, you have a lot of work to do if you want to catch up to me, son. Thank you for riding with me yet again, ladies and germs. In approximately one week.. same Hustle time, same Hustle page.. I'll be back with yet another "Hustle Original" for mass consumption. I think it'll be time to hand out grades.. and I'll just leave it with that hint. Keep your peepers peepin for that.
