Romeo Done!

Vol XXI – Wrestlemania IX

Salutations Ladies, Gentleman and Nation. My name is Mazza and this is The Classic Paper Review. There is a reason for the rather odd intro to this edition of the CPR and that is because today I will be welcoming a special guest along for the ride, but more about that later. Today I will be taking a look at a pay-per-view that is generally regarded by smarks as the worst WrestleMania ever. With every passing year, WrestleMania 9 seems to get cheesier and cheesier but I remember watching with a hell of a lot of excitement and enthusiasm as a 13 year old. A lot of people (myself included) moan about how today's product is too family orientated after all the excellent and risqué storylines of the Attitude Era. Something we often forget though is that WWE is traditionally a product that is aimed at families and in particular, children. I mean how many of us can truthfully say that our love affair with professional wrestling started after our 18th birthdays? Not many, if any at all I am sure. So I have decided that there would be nobody better to help me review the event than a 12-year-old boy watching the event for the first time. Seeing as I don't have a database of 12-year-old boys at my disposal, I decided to contact SkittleZ. Unfortunately, His Fruitiness was not home and then I remembered that BeyondKnight has a young friend who had been a rather successful part of his columns in the past.

BeyondKnight is currently the most sought after free agent in LOP history. He recently left his regular column, The Knight's Report due to problems with the quote-unquote "CF Network". He is usually delusional, he has a fetish for interns, he FU's babies but more importantly, he is one of the most talented writers in the LOP Forums. I need to snap this guy up right now before XanMan ties him into a long term ironclad contract for their Excuse the Aggravation column. Ladies and Gentleman, without further ado, Mazza and the CPR proudly presents to you, BeyondKnight and his young boy friend (that is boy who is a friend), Mark.

This is a complete travesty of justice! First the network steals my show and now they are whoring out BK trademarks to the lowest bidder! So while Mazza continues to make a career out of using my genius, (ask him how he REALLY won CSI Nation) I continue to wallow in obscurity. I need to do something to recapture the glory that was The Knight's Report. All right Mark, you watch Mania and if Mazza offers you anything, don't drink it! The last thing you need is one of his quote-unquote "Roofie Coladas". I'll be back in a bit.

THE FACTS

As usual, all facts and figures are from Wikipedia.

The Event: Wrestlemania IX
The Date: 4 April 1993
The Place: Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada
The Attendance: 16,891

AN EVENT OF EPIC PROPORTIONS

Wrestlemania 9 was the start of the first period where I started to drift away from wrestling. As a kid I never really bought Bret Hart as World Champion after growing up with the Hogans and Warriors of this world. The main event would see Royal Rumble winner Yokozuna taking on the Hitman for his title. The other main selling points of the event were The Undertaker facing his biggest ever challenge in Harvey Wippleman's Giant Gonzalez in addition to Hulk Hogan teaming with Brutus Beefcake to take on Tag Team Champions Ted DiBiase and IRS. I will now let every meet Mark, hopefully he will have an interesting view of this event.

Hi everyone! Like BK said, I'm Mark and I love wrestling. WWE wrestling at least. I've been watching for a while but I haven't seen a lot of the old Manias. So I was pretty excited to see Wrestlemania 9. Even though it came out 3 years before I was born! I thought the opening was very cool with all the gladiators and the announcers coming to the ring on elephants and camels. I don't really know who Bobby Heenan is but he seems like a jerk. My cousin Bobby is a jerk too so maybe it’s because of the name. JR looks funny in a toga and I think Macho Man is crazy. For real.

Well I guess it is time to get on with the show. I hate do disagree with Mark but that entrance sucked so badly. Jim Ross must really cringe looking back on this. All the announce team and interviewers were kitted out in Roman get-up and I have no idea what was with Julius Caesar and Cleopatra being brought out but they were followed by Randy Savage with some vestal virgins (not sure if Steph was amongst them) and Bobby Heenan riding backwards on a camel.

Tatanka (With Sensational Sherri) defeated Shawn Michaels (With Luna Vachon) by countout in 18:13 in an Intercontinental Match (Michaels retains)

Prior to Mania, Shawn Michaels had dumped his manager The Sensational Sherri and in Vegas he came to the ring with Luna Vachon. Sherri in turn accompanied the undefeated Tatanka to ring. Tatanka seemingly had a great future back in 1993, not only was he talented and had an interesting mid-90s gimmick, he was also very much over. The match starts out with a feeling out process with Tatanka getting the upper hand. The match develops at a nice pace with Shawn using high flying moves and Tatanka continuously reverting back to his signature chops. The pace soon slows down and the moves become scarce for a while as the challenger works over Michaels with armbars.

We soon have some nice interaction between Michaels and Sherri as the champion takes charge of the match. We soon see Tatanka's version of "hulking up" which gets him a series of two counts. With Michaels in trouble on the outside, he pulls the referee out of the ring. Tatanka then hits his finisher, the fallaway slam and makes the cover but the referee does not count and calls for the bell to the dismay of the crowd. It is announced that Shawn was counted out and therefore keeps his title. As Tatanka celebrates his empty victory, Luna takes out Sherri before being chased to the back. This was a very good opener. There were some real slow parts here and there but the rest of the action was quality. Tatanka was a promising talent at this stage of his career and Michaels was already showing signs of innovation that would make him the best in the business.
CPR Rating: 7.5 (Coefficient 2)

HBK looks so young! It's weird to see him before he was with Triple H in DX. I am so glad DX is coming back BTW. I don't really know Tatanka all that well. I guess he's supposed to be the good guy and Shawn is the bad guy. That doesn't seem right. And that Luna chick is creepy. I'm glad she's not around. I wonder if she could beat the Glamazon though. Shawn looks alot younger here but his wrestling hasn't changed much. This was a good match but I wish HBK would have won. I guess beating HBK did not help Tatanka in the long run. Mazza what is a coefficient? I'll just give it a thumbs up.
Mark's Rating: Thumbs Up!

Don't worry Mark, older people than you do not understand my coefficients either.

The Steiner Brothers defeated The Headshrinkers (With Afa) in 14:22
Those dudes look like Umaga! Wait is that Rikishi? Bobby was talking about Rikishi the other day! And that can't be the same Scott Steiner! There is no way that is the same dude that is in TNA! He's got a mullet! And he can actually move! My cousin Bobby used to tell me that Scott Steiner used to be really good. I just never believed him. Scott Steiner won a match at Wrestlemania. That's just plain weird. I wonder what made Scott Steiner go from that to the crazy dude he is now? This was a neat match and I still can't believe that's really Scott Steiner. He should have kept the mullet.
Mark's Rating:Thumbs Up

Don't worry Mark, I was there first time around for the Steiner Brothers and I don't quite believe it is the same guy in TNA today either. This would be the first Slobberknocker of JR's WWF career and it starts out with Fatu (Rikishi) and Scott. From the beginning it is a rough brawl with lots of hard hitting but the psychology is definitely there to keep it interesting (Hi Plan!). The Headshrinkers cut off the ring and work over Scott inside and outside the ring. Scott plays the face in peril for what seems like an eternity until Rick eventually gets the hot tag. Rick also fails to take control of the Samoans but when the Headshrinkers go for a Doomsday Devise type manoeuvre, Rick counters by hitting a powerslam from Fatu's shoulders as Samu comes off the top rope. Fatu breaks the count and Rick tags in Scott who soon hits Samu with a Frankensteiner for the three. The match worked well but the action hardly ever reached exciting until the end despite all men showing good glimpses of athleticism.
CPR Rating: 6.5 (Coefficient 1)

Doink the Clown defeated Crush in 8:28
Doink had been stalking Crush in the weeks leading up to WrestleMania including hitting the big man with a false arm. I often thought Crush could have made it to the main event and evil Doink always had something interesting going on. Doink does not have time to enter the ring before Crush takes him out and attacks him on the outside. The match is looking like a total squash until Doink manages to hang Crush up on the top rope. The clown then shows off his repertoire before getting caught coming of the top turnbuckle. Crush soon locks in his Kona Crush (two handed head vice) finishing move but Doink gets to the ropes and a stray elbow takes out the ref. Crush locks in his finisher again but another Doink appears from under the ring to nail Crush with the false arm. The two clowns double team the big man and wake up the ref to get the victory. This match often gets criticism but it was far from awful. The action was quite good before the ref bump and I think the 2 Doink storyline was great. Story writing gold and the WWE needs to hire back the guy that wrote this bad boy pronto. I know kids hate clowns. I wonder what Mark made of that.
CPR Rating: 7 (Coefficient 1)

I hate clowns. And that is a creepy clown! I am glad that he's not around today. Can you imagine John Cena vs Doink? Actually that might be pretty cool. This Crush dude reminds me of Chris Masters. I don't know why he isn't destroying Doink. Oh, Crush does Khali's head squish move. OMG, there is another Doink. This doesn't make any sense. I hate clowns, hate them, HATE THEM!!!!! HE HIT HIM WITH HIS ARM!!!! This needs to end now! DIE STUPID CLOWN!
Mark's Rating: THUMBS DOWN FOR EVIL WINNING CLOWNS!!

Razor Ramon defeated Bob Backlund in 3:45
Is that Bob dude seriously a wrestler? He looks like he could get beat up by Michael Cole! I remember Bobby talking about how good Razor Ramon was in the NWO. He is pretty fun to watch. Wow, that was a short match and he out-wrestled him! I kind of like that Razor dude even though he's the bad guy. They keep calling him the bad guy. I wish that match was longer. Or that Razor was wrestling someone that doesn't suck.
Mark's Rating: 7HUMBS UP

If only he knew!!! Backlund did not even get entrance music for his WrestleMania debut. Razor does he pre-match shtick and actually has the crowd support which showed that even kids in 1993 did not know who the hell Backlund was, let alone kids in 2009. The Bad Guy dominates the veteran from the start but Backlund soon gets to show off some of his talents. Ramon however catches the veteran out with a small package for a quick victory. The match was decent for what it was but it really was not long enough. Backlund was not as smooth as he could have been but Razor certainly did will against the legend.
CPR Rating: 6 (Coefficient 1)

Money Inc. (Ted DiBiase and Irwin R. Schyster) defeated The Mega-Maniacs (Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake) (With Jimmy Hart) by disqualification in 18:27 to retain the WWF Tag Team Championship

In the build up to Mania, the Tag Team Champions initiated a beatdown on Beefcake which led to the return of the Hulkster. The Mega Maniacs would then go on to challenge Money Inc for their titles in Vegas. Hogan came out with a busted up eye which was explained by Money Inc having had The Hulkster jumped the night before. The real reason for the injury is unknown although one theory is that it was Randy Savage who inflicted the beating after finding out about a previous affair between Hogan and Elizabeth. I tell you what, I was never a Hulkamaniac but there is something about Real American playing at WrestleMania that just fits. IRS and Beefcake start off the match and the champions quickly take control and cut The Barber off. Beefcake eventually gets the upper hand and tags in The Hulkster to a great ovation. The Mega-Maniacs proceed to dominate the bout and Money Inc walk away. The Fink then announces that if the champions don't return, they will also lose their titles and DiBiase and Shyster make their way back to the ring. They soon take control of Hogan and use a whole host of illegal tactics. DiBiase locks in the Million Dollar Dream and The Hulkster is fading fast before teasing a Hulk up. Beefcake eventually breaks the hold with the ref distracted and puts The Million Dollar Man in a sleeper. Both men are down for a nine count before both tagging in their partners.

Beefcake unleashes on Shyster before being stopped in his tracks by a shot with a briefcase. Money Inc then take off Beefcake's protective mask (he had metal plates in his face from a jet-ski accident) and go to work on The Barber's face before a ref bump. With the ref down, Hogan receives the hot tag and knocks out both of the champions with the mask. Jimmy Hart makes a three count and hands the titles to the Mega-Maniacs before a referee comes out from the back and names the Money Inc the winners by disqualification. Hart throws the ref (Danny Davis) out of the ring and the losers celebrate by Hogan and Beefcake doing their shtick. They then open Money Inc's briefcase and share the money inside around ringside. I am really not sure what to make of this. All four men are, without a doubt, great entertainers and they did their job very well in terms of ring psychology but for such a supposedly huge match, it was a little anti-climatic, particularly considering it was Hogan at WrestleMania. The action was very basic and we did not even get to see the atomic leg drop.
CPR Rating: 7 (Coefficient 2)

Out of everyone the Million Dollar Man still looks about the same! He was just on Raw a couple weeks ago and looks just about the same. I wonder if he can still wrestle. Why is the dude with Hulk Hogan dressed in red and yellow too? And Beefcake is kind of a dumb name. Wow, Hogan's face is really messed up. This is a strange match. It's really slow but everyone there seems to love Hulk Hogan. I'm not sure why because he isn't doing anything. Wait Hogan hit him with Beefcake's mask and that got him DQ'd? Again, this match doesn't make much sense. I think this was supposed to be a bigger deal than it turned out to be.
Mark's Rating: THUMBS DOWN

Lex Luger defeated Mr. Perfect in 10:56
Wow those girls carrying Lex Luthor's mirror aren't really wearing much at all! Bobby said that Lex Luthor killed Miss Elizabeth. Mr. Perfect seems pretty cool. He reminds me of Dolph Ziggler. This match it better than the last one. And those bodyslams are pretty good. I dunno though, this is ok but nothing about it is awesome. Maybe if the mirror girls came back out. Perfect seems like he would be a better bad guy. Damm the match is over and he is still beating on Perfect! Wait, they are backstage and HBK just attacked Perfect. Man I guess HBK really used to be a big jerk.
Mark's Rating: THUMBS UP

Curt "Mr Perfect" Hennig was extremely cool Mark (and according to my Missus who just passed by, he even has a perfect butt) but he totally botched the pre-match promo. I would certainly recommend putting his DVD on your list to Santa this year. Perfect had spent much of his WWF career as a heel but became a fan favourite after turning on Bobby Heenan and Ric Flair. Since then, Heenan had been on a mission to put Hennig out of commission and his newest recruit, The Narcissist Lex Luger would be up for the job here. Luger's gimmick saw him accompanied to the ring with four hot chicks in thongs each holding a mirror. Hennig on the other hand has one of those theme tunes that just sends shivers down my spine when I hear it.

The match is back and forth in the early stages with a decent pace as we see Hennig show off his skills. Luger eventually takes control after targeting Perfect's lower back but Hennig battles though the pain and gets a few two counts. The finish comes as they go for a backslide and Luger uses the ropes to get the upper hand. The referee counts to three despite Perfect’s feet being on the ropes but this time there was no Danny Davis. After the match, Luger knocks out Hennig with his plated forearm. An angry Perfect wakes up and goes to the back to a standing ovation where he beats on Luger before being taken out by Shawn Michaels. This was a very solid match but then again, Perfect was one of those guys who could get a great match out of a broom.
CPR Rating: 8 (Coefficient 2)

This match also gives us the CPR's Bobby Heenan quote of the night:

Savage: You want to take a polygraph after the Hitman got knocked out?

Heenan: No, I don't have false teeth, I don't need polygrip.

The Undertaker (With Paul Bearer) defeated Giant Gonzalez (With Harvey Wippleman) by disqualification in 7:33

Now if WrestleMania 9 really is the worst Mania ever, many people point to this moment as being a lot of the reason why. Gonzalez was so bad you would feel happy to be watching Khali and if you think his costume is bad, you should check out the one he had at the Royal Rumble which had furry parts. Gonzalez was one of a host of monsters recruited by Wippleman to take out The Undertaker and he made his debut at Royal Rumble that year and decimated The Deadman. The match starts out with Taker no-selling the Giant's offence and gets some of his own in but Gonzalez' size sees him continually get back in control. The Giant then locks in a sleeper hold before dominating him on the outside. The power of the urn sees Taker keep getting up. With Taker finally looking like he may take the big man down, he is put out by Gonzalez by a cloth covered in chloroform. The ref calls for the DQ and the Deadman is out cold. The post-match seems to go on forever with Gonzalez parading around as Taker is taken away on a stretcher. There is a gong and Taker comes back to the ring and bests the Giant for a moment before he is led backstage. Whilst this match certainly sucked and deserves much of the criticism it receives, I have seen worse matches. It really was a mess though and seemed to go on a lot longer than it actually did.
CPR Rating: 3.5 (Coefficient 2)

UNDERTAKER!!!! He looks even more awesome back then than he does now. He needs to come out with a Vulture more often. It is weird to see him outside when it's light out though. It doesn't fit. What the hell is that dude wearing? Why does he have tights with muscles painted on them? Why isn't he doing anything when Taker hits him? And why isn't Taker actually wrestling? What the hell is he doing to Taker with that cloth? This is the weirdest Undertaker match I have ever seen. They are taking Undertaker out on a stretcher?? You don't take him out like that. The druids come and take him away. Bobby was telling me how that happened when Edge stole the title from him a few years ago. Maz, did you know that happened in Pittsburgh? That's because Pittsburgh rules. Oh, ok Undertaker runs back out. But he doesn't Tombstone the giant? This was awful. Undertaker is supposed to have awesome matches at Wrestlemania. That's like a law. On the plus side I am glad Taker is back now and I can see him live when Uncle John and I go to Bragging Rights in October.
Mark's Rating: Thumbs Down

Yokozuna (With Mr Fuji) defeated Bret Hart in 8:55 to win the WWF Championship

That was an awful main event. And it didn't seem like anyone there cared if Bret Hart won or lost. I bet he wishes they chanted Canada, but no one chants Canada. Bobby has told me that Bret Hart is awesome but I think he's kind of boring. I haven't seen a lot of his old stuff but he is on some of Bobby's old tapes. He rambles on when he talks. I guess Yoko was supposed to be hard to beat and I don't understand why they kept talking about Lex Luthor hitting him when he wasn't even in the match. And why is Hulk Hogan there?
Mark's Rating: Thumbs Down

Bret had been beaten down by Yokozuna at the contract signing for the match and was knocked out by Lex Luger earlier in the day. The champ uses his speed from the get-go but soon falls to Yoko's massive weight advantage. The challenger slowly works over The Hitman, reverting back to a trapezius nerve hold. The crowd starts a USA chant despite a Canadian going against a Japanese guy but it seems to give Bret some life as he unleashes his arsenal on the big man. He then locks in the Sharpshooter on Yoko's massive legs but Mr Fuji throws salt in the champ’s eyes from the outside. Yoko makes the cover and becomes new WWF Champion. The action here was alright considering the size of Yokozuna but it certainly is not what you would expect for a WrestleMania main event. It looked like Yoko would be the first heel to walk away from WrestleMania as WWF Champion until Hulk Hogan made his way to ringside to tell the ref what had happened.
CPR Rating: 6 (Coefficient 3)

Hulk Hogan defeated Yokozuna (With Mr Fuji) in 0:21 to win the WWF Championship
The Hulkster did not however get the match restarted for Hart, instead he was challenged by Fuji. A resentful looking Bret signals at Hogan to take up the challenge. Hogan gets in the ring and is held by the new champ as Fuji once again reaches for the salt. Hogan ducks however and a clothesline and legdrop later, Real American is closing WrestleMania once more as Hogan becomes five time WWF Champion. Well the match was way too short to rate but to have Hogan's ego stroked that much at the expense of two professionals who earned the right to headline the event was for me what makes WrestleMania 9 the worst ever. The crowd seemed to enjoy it though so I guess that is all that matters at the end of the day. What did you make of that Mark?
CPR Rating: N/A

If Yokozuna is that easy to beat why couldn't Bret just beat him? I guess those people really did love Hulk Hogan. If he was so popular why wasn't he in the main event to begin with instead of a dumb tag match. You said before that Hart and Yoko were good, but if they were so good why didn't anyone care until Hogan came down? I guess this does prove that America is better than Canada and Japan so that's kind of cool. It's funny. Bobby was my age when he watched this when it was on and he loved Hulk Hogan. Now he says this is terrible but Uncle John told me that when he watched it years ago Bobby thought it was awesome.
Mark's Rating: Thumbs Down

THE VERDICT

Overall I have given WrestleMania IX a CPR Rating of 64%. I think Mark’s last comment about his cousin Bobby’s views on the last match sum it up a lot. There is a certain magic to WrestleMania 9 that wears of over time. As I said before, there is a certain familiarity about Hogan and WrestleMania that just fits and he was still hot enough in 1993 for that to be true. Looking back however, The Hulkster stealing the spotlight at the end was something that is something that is really frowned upon by myself and a lot of the IWC. Hogan’s other match of the night was mildly interesting but nowhere near as big as a deal as it was made out to be.

The whole Giant Gonzalez debacle was also a major embarrassment. To be honest I am not sure how they could have done it better and I really think this was a bad choice in opponent for the Undertaker. The rest of the action across the card was good but not great. We had solid but not great matches throughout the event but far too many contentious finishes for such a big event. For me, the other really poor Mania was 11 and I previously rated that at 66% so I am pretty sure that we can safely say that 9 was the worst Mania ever. Also, those ratings do not take into consideration the tedious Roman theme. On the plus side however, Bobby Heenan was as golden as ever on commentary with some great chemistry with Randy Savage and Jim Ross on hand to be the butt of many jokes.

I think that the guys we have today are much better. John Cena would be able to beat Bret Hart and probably hit the Attitude Adjustment on Yoko. And it's nice to see that HBK and Undertaker both became so popular and awesome. I think that this is more silly that the WWE that we have today but I think lots of stuff from back then was more silly. The old versions of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was more silly than the one that is on now. The new one is awesome, but the old one is just ok. The new Batman movies they just made are better than the old ones that were made then. But it was fun to listen to JR, Macho and Heenan. They were probably the funniest thing about the whole Mania. And I liked how it was all Roman style. I think that WWE should do another thing like that. Even if it wasn't for Wrestlemania how cool would it be to see everyone and everything dressed up for a Halloween Paper View! But I don't want them to have Wrestlemania outside when it’s light out. That looked stupid. Also it was weird to see a Wrestlemania without all the fireworks and lights and stuff. I like that stuff, it's cool.

Okay, kid this is still my column and you cannot start on the turtles. Also, for the record, Nicholson > Ledger. That out of the way I can certainly see your point. It was about it being very strange that it was light out and the lack of pyrotechnics that we have today seems strange. I can certainly understand you thinking that Cena is better than Bret based on this event but maybe I can invite you back one day to watch one of The Hitman’s better matches. Mark has really highlighted the extraordinary pace at which pro wrestling has changed over the years. A lot of this event seems very redundant when compared to today’s product and it was a very gimmicky WrestleMania. It makes me wonder what fans will feel about events like Extreme Rules or the upcoming Breaking Point 15 years down the road. I will now hand over the reigns on BeyondKnight who shook me down for his own section in this column in exchange for the services of Mark.

BK's SECTION

Nation, in exchange for allowing Mark to appear on this program, Mazza has allowed me to use this time as I see fit. What I'd like to do is share a piece of fan-mail I recently received.
